French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

September 22, 2008 -

The Daily Mail reports that a 13-year-old French boy is under arrest in Lyon, charged with committing arson against several cars.

A Lyon police spokesman told the newspaper:

He said he played the game for a few hours, then wanted to go out and what it felt like to burn out some cars. This kind of entertainment is clearly having a negative effect on some young people.

There's an obvious accuracy problem in the story, however. See if you can spot it:

The 13-year-old schoolboy used petrol to set light to three vehicles after playing on the violent GTA 4: Liberty City game on his home PC.

If you said, "Wait, the PC version of GTA IV doesn't even ship until November 21st in Europe," go to the head of the class.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

That's because it ain't Thompson. just some kid trying to get some attention (which paradoxically, is a lot like Thompson).  Jack Thompson has "Jack Thompson, attorney at law" or something like that registered here.  People just blindly reply to him without thinking through.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Haven't been keeping up with recent events in France have we?

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

The reporter's getting the version of the game wrong is the story here for you, Dennis?  The story is that yet another kid has been caught throwing Molotov cocktails at cars, and the law enforcement entity involved has connected GTA to the event. The 60 Minutes piece I was on more than three years ago begins with the throwing of a Molotov cocktail in GTA: Vice City.

Once again, I am ahead of the curve, and Dennis McCauley is left to try, desperatedly, to clean up Take-Two's mess.  Nice try, Dennis.  It ain't working.  Jack Thompson

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Holy cow, it is another fake jacko, but even if it was him...

Suck it, sue me baby, do it, do it, come on!  Wait, you can't do it by yourself anymore.  Thats right, you are disbarred sucka.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Strictly speaking, he isn't disbarred yet. But it must only be a matter of a few days, at this point, since it's well past the date that was planned for the final verdict.

"and the law enforcement

"and the law enforcement entity involved has connected GTA to the event."

No. You seem to have a pathalogical indifference to the articles you post and comment on Mr. Thompson. The CRIMINAL who commited the crime tried to link GTA to what he did. Not the law enforcement officials. Now, I'm not a lawyer, like you amazingly still are, but I think I know the difference between a criminal and the people who arrested him. If you More information about formatting optionsdon't, then that's a very, VERY basic thing that you should try and figure out.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

"story is that yet another kid has been caught throwing Molotov cocktails at cars..."

Really?  The Daily Mail states only that he "used petrol to set light to three vehicles."  For all we know he just poured gas on the cars and lit them with a match.

Now, if you have new information that backs up your claim that the boy was chucking Molotovs, then by all means link us to it.  Otherwise, you're just talking out of your ass.  Again.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

*reads all three stories* Goddamn, those are some pretty sick crap. Two in Texas and one in Colorado, and all three with crazies talking about how God told them to kill their children. I hate that these children died, but I feel more sorry for the 15-month-old in the first one that survived: he's probably 6 now, and the report said he'll have mental health problems for the rest of his life.

But you are right. Here you go, Thompson: adults killing their children because a crazy little voice in their head, who they identified as God, told them to do it. And to think: not one of them needed to play video games to prepare for it......Sick stuff.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Exactly, and, like most people, Jack knows that these were seriously mentally ill people who needed help, but his reasoning flies totally off the handle when it comes to computer games.

To be honest, it's pretty good evidence that Jack himself isn't entirely in line with his own mental compass, he wants to find fault in computer games, and if that means ignoring facts, statistics and common sense, he'll quite happily do so.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Anyone taking bets that part of his disbarment sentence will include therapy sessions with a court-appointed psychiatrist and/or a stay at a mental institute?

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Correction: between five- and six-years-old. My bad.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Er.. Jack, in 2005 there were riots in France where immigrants, most of whom had never even heard of GTA, burned 30,000 cars and attacked nearly 4000 Policemen.

Ahead of the curve? You're in a circle.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Mr. Thompson, the game doesn't show you how to MAKE the molotov cocktails. Period.

Besides, it doesn't take a 'simulator' to know how to throw something with your arm.

It's a scapegoat. You know it, I know it, let's face it, the whole freaking world knows it. The world also knows that you're lying through your teeth, like always.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

!!PARENTS AROUND THE WORLD!!

Parent your freakin little kids.  If they are not out of the house, you have a level of control over them.  I don't care if your 28 year old that lives in your basement is playing M rated games and starts acting up afterward, if he lives in your house, you can say, quit playing the game, or get out of my house.

Now when they are under 18 years of age, or are still in high school, just take the damn thing away from them.  You don't have to do anything else.  Say you didn't like their behavior after playing the game, so you sold it and are using the money to fix the hole in the wall that they made, or whatever.  To pay for your psych bill for having to put up with their BS if they got the game without your permission, haha.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Same story, different day.

Do you guys wonder what it would be like in a world without GTA? I can see it now...

"In another twisted story of games gone wrong, 15 twelve year olds who were into the occult called "Umbrella", drank each a bottle of clorox so they can look like zombies from the classic video game "Resident Evil: Nemesis chronicles extinction city. President of the Florida Bar Association Jack Thompson (Alternate Universe) said that the case was tragic, but probably not related to video games at all, and that they were responsible for their own behavior. He also told poeple to use their brains from time to time and to avoid mass hysteria."

eh...

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Wow, can't believe JT hasn't commented yet.  Maybe he's actually doing something constructive instead of trolling.

The amount of inaccurate information in this article is, well, not surprising really.  Still not as bad, or as funny, as the "virtual orgasmic rape" Mass Effect story though.

Now if you excuse me, I'm going to go back to playing the PC-exclusive "Grand Theft Auto V: The Quest for Roman's Gold".  You get points for lighting the elderly on fire!

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Maybe they got the whole 'points' thing from the first GTA and it's expansions? You know the top-down view where you did get points for casuing mayhem

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

"If you said, "Wait, the PC version of GTA IV doesn't even ship until November 21st in Europe," go to the head of the class."

Damn, my guess was that "Liberty City" is not the title/subtitle of the game.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

You are able to throw molotovs at them, but it dosen't really set them on fire, just burns the tires.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Can you even set cars on fire in GTA?  I know you can steal them and get down in them, but I don't remember being able to set them on fire...

Sortableturnip's Law: As an online discussion of video game violence grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Jack Thompson approaches 1

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Yeah, they light on fire right before they blow up.  Not usually a good thing to happen....unless you caused a traffic jam and purposely blew up the one at the very front.  But this is speaking from experiencing 1-3, as I have yet to actually play 4.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Anyone else have the feeling this kid, at some previous point, wanted to know what it felt like to cut up a helpess puppy or something?

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

In France, it seems that there isn't much coverage on that story. The only mainstream article I read was from Libération, a left-wing newspaper that is usually "game-friendly". The author said a bit of bullshit, such as : "he explaines he imitated video game Grand Theft Auto 4 (...) where the player must commit a maximum of illegal acts to win the game". But that's all. He's not talking about points, nor about a PC game.

I can't really predict the future, but I bet this story won't go too far. Call me a cynical person, but no one's dead, and this teenager burnt only 2 cars, so it's not enough to attract mainstream attention.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Like they say: "If it bleeds, it leads."

And like the Metallica song, it's sad but true.

Go here - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/betafeedback.html and (politely) tell them the mistakes they have made in the article. If enough of us do it they will take notice and change it!

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

I was just about to reccommend that.

I left a very nice comment for them. I'm sure they'll enjoy reading it.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Are we to believe that he was playing this game on a...erm...magic PC or something? Boy, I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder...

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Classic story i love how reporters are just so hilariously incorrect.

NAME - GTAIV: Liberty City - WRONG (and would take 1 MINUTE to google it and see its wrong)

PLATFORM - PC - WRONG (again google.. not out on pc.. wow thats an elite research skill)

COMMENT - rewarding 'points' for causing as much destruction and chaos as possible...

TOTALLY AND UTTERLY WRONG.. no Points, and no rewards for causing random destruction, other than being chased by cops and killed... not exactly a reward.

Its no wonder kids are claiming 'games made me do it' when irresponsible stories like this are published day in day out.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Yeah but this is Daily Mail.. the only facts in that paper are the price tag, and I'm not sure about that...

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

A teenager said he was inspired to burn some cars after watching the video game

So, who was playing it?

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Guess I can only go to the middle of the class. I thought the problem was the gas part since you can't pour gas on something then light it on fire. Closest you can do is a molotov. That and calling it "GTA 4: Liberty City". Of course tha could be the name of it in Europe.

Either way, I smell alot of BS coming off of this one.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

8 November 2005: The cabinet authorises a range of emergency powers to tackle the unrest, under which local authorities can impose curfews and restrict people's movements. It is the first time the 1955 law has been implemented on mainland France. The move follows a night during which 1,173 cars are burnt and 330 arrests made, with 12 police officers injured.

Where on earth might this french lad have got the idea of setting something on fire?

I'm sure if you go back a few years they burn a whole load of sheep for some reason or another too.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Further evidence that if the game industry is to blame for violence, it's near the end of a very, very, long line.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Further, GTAIV is called GTAIV, not GTAIV: Liberty City. (wakey wakey, GP )

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

I believe that was what is reported from another article, not GP's spelling error.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

wow man i love the press now cant even get  their false facts stiaght some times. im glad i dont watch the news anymore.

Thanks

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Watch the kid turn out to be 23 instead of 13 too, haha.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

GTA4 isn't even on PC yet.....

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Oh, and GamePolitics, you missed this.

"The game awards points (for) creating as much as crime and destruction as possible in a city."

Yes, again with the non-existant points.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

I'm willing to let this one slide. Money in GTA is treated a lot more like points than money. But you don't score a lot for destruction and crime per se.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Unless they mean the star rankings for the police warning, but that can't be right because those are a bad thing and a deterrent to break the law in-game. I mean, GTA has in-game deterrents like that for doing wrong, right? They make it sound like otherwise.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

 OR,

They could mean the Achievements you get for doing certain things in the game,

but you dont get them for torching cars now do you...

Seems alot of people in this world have got ALOT of hatred against Rockstar games since that one person in England butchered his friend and blamed it on Manhunt, even though nobody in Manhunt got killed the way that person did....

When will these people learn that video games dont cause violence, they reduce violence because everybody is inside playing them living they're fantasy.. its almost as if these kids are paid just to get a game banned, the same for films too

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

What about the ranking it gives you under statistics. The one that goes down if you use cheat codes. That counts as points doesn't it?

---------------------------------------------------- Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Thats more of a ranking to me then points.  I just uusally think of numbers when I think of points and not ranks.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Well it does have numbers.

Alright, you faker. Move along. We don't need fake laughs from a fake Thompson. If we wanted some real humor, we'd just wait until the real thing shows up (and trust me: he will. Like a mole popping up out of the machine at the fair, just begging to be whacked with the big padded hammer a billion times before going back down and repeating said upward motion).
