Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

September 24, 2008

San Francisco's Current TV has created a four-minute video which examines the issue of homophobia in online gaming.

During a portion of the segment GayGamer.net editor Flynn DeMarco discusses the 2007 hate attack which took his site offline temporarily.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

The fact of the matter is, the majority of the people who say horrible things in online games do so because they're not within punching distance.

That said, I have noticed more insulting comments towards homosexuals than others, and I'm not exactly sure why that is.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

its common, but pretty embarrassing if you where even caught making a homophobic slur in PUBLIC. Eminem is not homophobic per se, but he did use the word "faggot" a lot. oh god i'm getting off topic again!!!

my point is if somebody made a homophobic remark in PUBLIC, well, think Micheal Richards... poor bastard, i don't even think he was even racist and he's branded one for dropping N-bombs in a comedy club. What i do know is that people don't have the balls to say the N-word or "faggot" in public... they get their teeth knocked out by a African-American transvestite (i may be republican, but i know where my PC limits will get me in trouble :D :D :D :D )

Yeah, I doubt most of that is genuine.

Anonymity can turn a person into a monster.

That'd be John Gabriel's Greater Internet Dickwad Theory. I can't believe no-one else metioned it yet.

"I think people are forgetting that they are dealing with people."

The problem is that these people don't give a ****. The hate for homosexuals has become so 'normal' that it is something they just don't care about. It's sad really.

I never play with the mic on. It helps me concentrate when im in Call of Duty 4. Don't have to deal with all the insults.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

Problem is you have all these homphobe pre-teens and teens who enjoy that the people they are spewing stuff to can't physically beat their heads in, so it makes them 'brave' to say such horrible things.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

I find teens today happen to be more accepting of homosexuality then people my own age (mid 20s and above). There are just a few outspoken ones that make the rest look bad.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

Just like the rest of the population, you would think that 80% of the people in the US are against same sex marriage with the stuff you see and hear, but it is actually about 40/40 with 20% not caring or on the fence.

You forgot the "other" category.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

So anybody against same-sex marriage is homophobic in your world?

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

Well let's see if they honestly believe that gay couples are fundamentally bad at raising children I guess that be enough of a reason (kinda sorta ...not really). Of course I'd demand evidence before I believed them.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

It's the only logical explanation. "Preservation of the sanctity of marriage" is a bunch of crap. Straight people ruined that a looooong time ago.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

Maybe its the same homphobes in real life that are just transfering to the internets?

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

I would definitely say that, because every tech savy person i know is okay with gays, it is the non-tech-savy and imbreaded people that are against it.  (aka republicians that just click the republician button when voting instead of voting for individuals on how they will do their specific job.  I have never voted or seen an election where all one party would be best.)

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

OH, now! i'm a card carrying republican. (first of, i don't hate ANYBODY, sexual orientation wise, race, nor sexist, i don't want to be branded a typical retarded redneck, lottery purchasing, and inbred moron! although i am a redneck, just a more loving redneck that loves everybody... you get the point). my point is that i do believe gays have the right to be happy, after all it is in our constitution ["pursuit of happiness," even though i keep getting attacked by happiness fairies, again i think of happiness fairies NOT as gay fairies, they are more like mosquitos sucking your blood and causing an itch, not a homophobic way, I HOPE I MADE MYSELF VERY CLEAR I'M NOT I A TYPICAL DUMBASS, INTOLERENT, REDNECK!!! sorry :p ] god i got off subject too many times, my point is don't think all republicans are going to be the nazi party. i'm a republican, but i know that video games don't cause violence. after all, JT is a republican too. (we are all hypocrits, and if there's anything more what God hates, he detests a hypocrit, so i admit that i am a hypocrit, so i am square with the lord now and forever, because i admitted that i lie though my teeth. or i do say one thing, then do another, God knows that i try to do what i need to do.) i'm going to shut up now... i lost my talking previleges :D

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

Chill he meant the republicans that refuse to listen to democrats, or any dissenting opinion who blindheartedly vote republican every single time no matter who's on the ticket and always defend said ticket again no matter who's on it.

There are people like that on the Democrats to so don't worry about it.

The only thing you made clear is that you don't know how to split up a wall of text into a few readable paragraphs.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

Gee that was pretty short and not hard hitting, I wonder if it's part of a series or what?

Anyway I hope this doesn't mean that soon people will try to remove anonymity from the internet just because some assholes are homophobic. If you go through all that trouble to harass a certain site something tells me you aren't too concerned about being anonymous (as long as they can't charge you with anything).

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

The internet isn't anonymous never has and never will be.  The whole premise for how it functions is being able to find you, that's how IP addresses work.  Its like living in a big city, you don't know everyone, but if you get the phone book you can find them.  You are more anonymous physically being in a crowd of strangers.  No one knows you, no one can tell us where you live, your name, etc.  When you surf your IP address is pretty much everywhere, all someone has to know is how to use the (internet) phone book and they can find you.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

And EVERYONE tracks what you are doing online, google, yahoo, msn, fox, abc, excite (haha), godaddy, and anyone else that wants to know more about their audience to know what adds they can put on their site to sell stuff, how to make better TV ads to shoot at different people, and how to word ads online even.

That is why the browsers having a stealth mode is as big of a deal as it is, but a lot of people dont realize that it is a big deal.  Having a dynamic IP and having other much more advance measures will never stop being the best way to go though.

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

Use TOR?

Re: Video Examines Homophobia in Online Gaming

That tends to be the risk these people run in the long term.  By abusing the anonymous nature of the internet they invite the risk of enough public outcry for the government to step in and do something about it.
