EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

October 2, 2008

Larry Probst, Chairman of the Board of Electronic Arts, has been named the new Chairman of the United States Olympic Committe, according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

Probst succeeds former Major League Baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth in the post and will likely lead efforts to bring the 2016 games to Chicago.

A press release on the USOC website offers reaction from the 58-year-old Probst:

I am honored to have the opportunity to serve an organization and a movement that makes such a significant difference in our world today. This is a movement built upon the spirit and dedication of athletes, and the selfless commitment of volunteers. By working closely with my fellow Board members, the USOC staff and the greater Olympic family in our country, my goal as Chairman is to preserve and strengthen opportunities for all those who wish to participate in this important endeavor.

So, how do you propose they add DRM to the Olympics?

NBC puts in a broadcast flag.

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

Let's just say I'm a bit concered how they'll treat athletes that win more than 3 medals...

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

damn you beat me to it haha

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

No, they will do worse, they will put ads all over the olympians, all over the locations, scrolling ads at the bottom of the screen during coverage, and commercials every 5 minutes.  That is how it makes money, and thats all this guy is good at.  If anything, he may somehow get your TV to turn on and to the olympics even when you dont want to watch them.

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

Basically, all the athletes are going to make the event a success and he is going to:

Put tacking devices in them without their knowledge which can't be removed without major surgery, its to make sure that only those who are registered can participate

A small fraction of the devices will give out debilitating electrical shocks since you can't make a device that works well with everyone's organs, some people may need to be brought back from the dead...

Make athletes pay a fee to him personally for participating

Not let them compete in more than one event unless a new fee is paid for a new registration

Not let any country submit more than 3 athletes without additional fees... and up it to 5 if the countries complain or threaten to boycott his companies’ products...

Pretend that only nations that paid his personal fees will have athletes at the Olympics and ignore that all the countries that didn't pay get to send as many as they like without any restrictions...

Disqualify Athletes if they talk about the Athlete Restriction Management (ARM) devices that he is going to put in them...

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

How about intensive, invasive and continual NSA background checks of you and anyone you know that continue for years after competing which are agreed to in the fine print when you sign up or agreed to implicitly by merely mentioning the word olympics?

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

So how long until we see lobbying to make the Olympics a yearly event with minor changes being made each year but requiring new facilities to be built in a new city each time?

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

"I am honored to have the opportunity to serve an organization and a movement that makes such a significant difference in our world today."  In his first sentence is a mistake.  The olympics don't make any difference in the world.  They used to bring about a brief period of peace.  I don't quite think the Russians remembered that.  "my goal as Chairman is to preserve and strengthen opportunities for all those who wish to participate in this important endeavor."  Again important is not a word I associate with the Olympics.  So some people are more fit then others, what difference does it make?

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

In all fairness, Georgia tried to pull a sneak attack on South Ossetia and admitted to doing so because of the Olympics.

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

SO, hbowl ong before we need ot pay for each event we watch?

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

We'll get a basic set of events to watch, but if we want the Field Games expansion pack, it'll cost extra... then the other 12 expansion packs on top of that.

As for the athletes themselves, they'll have to go through an online verification system each time they compete in an event, assuming the Olympic servers are up.  If not, then they won't be able to play... or if they find a way to do so, it will not count.

I could go on...

Re: EA Chairman Will Head U.S. Olympic Committee

In a word: Shit.

Oh well, it's not like I ever cared about the Olympics anyway...
