Is Codemasters the Latest Publisher to Bail on the ESA?

October 9, 2008 -

And then there were 22...

When 2008 began, the Entertainment Software Association, the lobbying group which represents U.S. video game publishers, had 28 member companies. Several well-publicized departures, however, reduced its ranks to 23 companies by the time that E3 rolled around in July.

A glance at current ESA membership reveals that prominent British game publisher Codemasters is no longer listed as part of the organization.

While there has been no announcement from the ESA, Codemasters' departure must be a fairly recent development. The publisher of the Operation Flashpoint and Colin McRae Rally series was officially reported to be an ESA member as recently as E3. An ESA booklet, Essential Facts About the Computer and Video Game Industry, distributed at the show, lists the firm as a member on page 12.

Codemasters thus apparently becomes the sixth publisher to leave the ESA since May, following Activision, Vivendi, LucasArts, id, and Crave out the door.

We have a request in to the ESA for comment.

GP: There has been speculation for some time that additional member companies might leave the ESA after E3. Current global economic conditions certainly can't be helpful to the ESA in its efforts to retain members.

UPDATE: The ESA has confirmed that Codemasters has left its membership ranks. A statement from Senior Vice President of Communications and Research Rich Taylor this morning says:

We can confirm that Codemasters has decided not to renew its ESA membership.  We respect Codemasters’ decision and look forward to continuing to work with them on issues of mutual interest.

Remeber kids, we just need to sit on the sides well everyone bashes video games and then empower them and then blame all of us for going against them. Of course anyone who dares question Lowestein will feel the wraith of the Jewish members of the ECA who dont like their kind being talked down too

Re: Is Codemasters the Latest Publisher to Bail on the ESA?

Codemasters is still around?

@ESA

It's time to d-d-d-d... d-d-d-d-die!

(Yu-Gi-Oh! joke. I read the Konami suit thread.)

Re: Is Codemasters the Latest Publisher to Bail on the ESA?

It's not that surprising, growth in the 'Bullet-proof' IT sector last month was extremely low in the UK, about 1% iirc, purse strings are being tightened everywhere, and membership to an organsiation that many companies are complaining do little more for them than 'exist' is going to be one of the first things to go.

Hopefully ESA falls and takes the ESRB with it.

Re: Is Codemasters the Latest Publisher to Bail on the ESA?

Hey! the ESRB is my favourite rating board.

Re: Is Codemasters the Latest Publisher to Bail on the ESA?

Personally I hope that the fall of ESA will simply make ESRB better. It can join up with ECA for all anyone knows. In regard to taking sides, I'm neutral on this.

Just let death stick her hand down your throat and rip your heart out ESA. Spare everyone some damn time and just die.

Andrew EisenWho, Colin Cowherd? No one's suggesting he should be forced out. Or that he should commentate on video games.04/27/2015 - 8:10pm
Matthew Wilson@AE I do not think he should be forced ou though. he has his right to his opinion and shouldnt be forced out because people disagree with it.04/27/2015 - 8:07pm
ZippyDSMleeJim suggjested a pay what you want setup like humble bundel.04/27/2015 - 7:49pm
MontePerhaps they should just add a donation system for creators like the monthly pateron model. Only those who regularly make quality content can get compensated while those who would abuse the system are ignored04/27/2015 - 7:46pm
MontePaid mods is not a bad idea; i mean its only fair that makers be compensated and even better if they can do it full time. UNfortunatly there is too much that can go wrong and room for abuse04/27/2015 - 7:44pm
Andrew EisenYeah, working on that story now. Or rather, I'm working on finding time to write up that story.04/27/2015 - 7:40pm

Matthew Wilson@zippy there is no way they are going to merge with capcom becouse both companies are not in good shape. sony, Nintendo, and square are the only companies with enough money to pull it off in japan.04/27/2015 - 4:27pm

E. Zachary KnightNot really. I think people are overly critical of other game projects. Delays should be expected and shouldn't be considered a major failing and worthy of the crap they get.04/27/2015 - 3:09pm
