Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games Controversy?

October 9, 2008 -

When it comes to the crime game genre, it must be difficult to compete with the Grand Theft Auto series.

Perhaps that explains the inclusion of streaking in the upcoming Saints Row 2. Edge Online put the question to Craig Mitchell, media relations guy for publisher THQ:

In terms of backlash from the game's content, we are not too concerned. THQ and [Saints Row developer] Volition have worked within the guidelines of the ESRB and the international ratings boards and the game has been rated appropriately...

In addition, Saints Row 2 has a very over-the-top tone and the activities like streaking play into that.  In streaking, the character's front is blurred out, plus, all the characters were made 'asexual' so even a possible mod/hack would not reveal anything.

In-game streaking earns respect points for the player's character.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

I don't see what the problem would be with uncensored nudity when you streak in the game, infact I can't think of anyone I know that would. The game is M ffs.

The people who flip out over stuff like that all non gamers. Who would buy a game for their kids with "Nudity" in the rating

Nudity does not equal sex, why is everyone so squemish? Oh well, some day games will be treated like films in regards to acceptable content.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

... If this was going to be an issue, why didn't people raise a fit over Metal Gear Solid 2? You spend a notable portion of the game sneaking around buck-naked with at least ONE hand over the goods while Campbell is going nuts.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

WTF is so wrong with pixelated nipples? Hope Volition don't chicken out again in the inevitable sequel.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

This will generate little, if any attention simply because it isn't from R*

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Of course it will, think BMX XXX or something along those lines.  I think SR2 will do enough business that it will catch some douche news reporter's attention and then all the problems will come out.  The only benefit is the fact that the guys are as anatomically correct as a Ken doll, so there is no real worry about quick hack nudity.

But when a modder changes their game won't the be held fully responsible and have to pay huge fines, or have they already payed off the right people?

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

If a modder adds things into the game then it doesn't affect the rating. Hot coffee gave San Andreas a re-rating because the video segments were all ready programmed into the game, allbeit disabled.

No more so than Nintendo gets in trouble for bad "naked mario" hacks.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

The media doesn't give a damn about minor things like the character models lacking sexual organs or the fact that it's really just some low-brow humor.  All they care about is selling papers/getting ratings/site hits by plastering a headline that'll read something like this:

"Video game allows children to gain points by streaking"

Hope THQ has all battlestations ready for the inevitable sh*t-storm.

This, and you can all damn well expect it to happen.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

I don't know we've forecasted so many shit storms that didn't happen. I think it's easy for the mass media to overlook this game.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

I think it might also play into what's going on around the area of first broadcast? I mean, take the economy and election coming up, I think they might well ignore it. But if it was a slow news day, they'd be much more likely to bring it up, probably of some idiot parents ups the attention first.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Yeah, I think with the state of the country, it might get ignored, but sure enough, if its slow, and some stupid parent notices it, you better believe it will be brought up.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

This game is going to be so fun. :) I'm going to be an old horribly obease woman who streaks. :P

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Be sure to give her the equivalent of the Barry White voice, or maybe the british voice.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

>.>;;;  Only Hillary Clinton (and of course, a certain soon to be disbarred lawyer) would bring something about this up, especally since 1: They're blurred and 2: making the characters asexual incase some hacker did hack the game (not the fault of the devlopers), was a wuss move.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

That isn't a wuss move, that's the only way to avoid controversy like the Hot Coffee scandal created. Modders can easily find a way to remove the blur, (if you don't believe me, google sims nudity cheat.) If modders really want to see very unrealistic looking pixelated nudity, they'll add in custom models.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Its a wuss move.  Hell, there isn't even any sex involved, just nudity, but heaven forbid, we must think of the idiots...I mean children, even when the children arn't supposed to be playing games of this sort to begin with.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Yeah but idiots oh I'm sorry, I mean the moral majority types, and certain politicians will assume that this game full of gangs, blood and over the top violence is for children and will be surprised when there's sexual stuff in it. Better make the nudity the equivalent of a barbie doll then.

Sadly, thats pretty much true.  Gah, I hate politicans, censors and their ilk.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Um... Sorry to ask and pardon my French, but what does "streaking" mean ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Running in public without any clothes on, common at sports stadiums and college campuses. Put football streaker into youtube and your bound to find hundres of examples

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

basically streaking is the act of running around in public naked

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

I wasn't aware that "sex-in-games" was in danger and needed reviving?

I wonder if this is going to cause another 200+ comments

all the characters were made 'asexual' so even a possible mod/hack would not reveal anything.

Now that really is getting defensive

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Oh come on you and I both know that if they didn't make them asexual under the clothing it could be hot coffee all over again (unless of course they show the ESRB the uncensored models.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Oh I know why they did it, I was referring to his comment being defensive. I just meant that he seemed to be going into a lot of detail about how they are trying to avoid controversy, not that they shouldn't have done it.

Re: Will Streaking in Saints Row 2 Revive Sex-in-Games

Probably should say "Imagine a life sized Ken or Barbie doll running down the street naked."  That should be enough to do it.

Sleaker@Technogeek - How do you call someone out that anonymously calls in a SWAT team, or sends threats to people?09/20/2014 - 7:04pm

SleakerIt also doesn't mean that just because a news outlet says that Gamers are the problem and you self-identify as a Gamer, you're immediately the problem. It also doesn't mean you're obligated to stop harassment from all gamers that are doing so.09/20/2014 - 4:59pm
SleakerJust to re-iterate: People getting harassed is wrong. Just because someone is harassed by so called 'gamers' doesn't mean that all gamers are bad. nor does it mean that you need to pass laws or judgement on all gamers.09/20/2014 - 4:56pm
SleakerAnd furthermore just because someone doesn't 'crusade against the evil' that doesn't make them the problem. You can have discussion with those around you. There's a thing called sphere of influence.09/20/2014 - 4:54pm
Sleaker@Conster - one person getting harassed is a 'problem' only so far as the harassee's are doing it. Just because a select few people choose to act like this doesn't make it widespread. Nor does it immediately make everyone responsible to put an end to it.09/20/2014 - 4:54pm

Craig R.There IS an issue. Nor do we need a study to show that if you deny it then you're part of the problem.09/20/2014 - 1:17pm
Sleakersimply oust people that do harass others.09/20/2014 - 11:34am
Sleaker@Conster - I can say the same thing if you think there's been more than a handful. Until there's an actual study on rates no one can claim to know how widespread the incidence of harassment is. Thus the best we can do is 'there might be an issue' and...09/20/2014 - 11:33am
