Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service Game

Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service Game

October 11, 2008

Life as a Secret Service agent must be very high pressure existence, indeed. When things go well, no one notices. When things go badly, the entire world is transfixed.

Activision will give players a chance to try on the agent's typical dark glasses, earpiece, and lapel pin in Secret Service, an upcoming, first-person title for Xbox 360, PS2 and PC.

The mission, of course, is presidential protection. From IGN's write-up:

Secret Service takes place on Inauguration Day in Washington D.C. An extremist assault has been launched against the capitol - security has been compromised and it is unclear who is friend or foe. There is no time for negotiation as you are thrust out of the shadows and into the line of fire in order to protect the nation's leaders. The action takes place among famous landmarks and everywhere in between, including both Marine One and Air Force One.

GP: Depending upon how it is presented, Secret Service could end up being a rather controversial game. There are those who will argue that presidential assassination scenarios should not be trivialized by turning them into a game.

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

I would counter the trivialization argument with America's Army. If the military can "trivialize" war, why can't we make a game about the secret service?

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

Sounds like fun. I just hope they don't use the game for some sort of lame social commentary and let it be politically neutral.

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

Sounds like some people at Activision have been watching alot of movies like 'Vantage Point'.

Assuming they aren't just going for shock value and are actually putting some thought and effort into this I think this could end up being a pretty good game. Based on the rather brief description I'm thinking it would play kinda like a combonation of Condemned, Deus Ex and Ico. I guess as long as they don't turn the whole game into one huge escort mission from GoldenEye it'll be fine...I swear sometimes I think Natalya wanted to die.

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

This sounds like the anti-JFK reloaded, what's the likelyhood of this either having a mode or getting a mod to let you try to take out the President. Also 360 needs a 0 point 'Traitor' achievement, especially if the president is a Bush lookalike

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

Why is it when something is protrayed in a video game it always becomes "trivial"?

Video Games are scary. Movies, books and tv shows don't ruin the young person's mind like video games!!

Who wants to think that there's going to be an overtone of uber-conservatism? Anyone, anyone at all?

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service
Activision (through its budget branding of Activision Value) actually already released two games based on the Secret Service -- Secret Service: In Harm's Way, and Secret Service: Security Breach. (The first was pretty good for a budget title; the second...not so much. At all). In the first (the only one I played to completion), you don't interact much with the President; the levels usually involve telling a VIP to hide in a bathroom while you shoot all the terrorists. (You do get to save the President in the last level, though). The first game (to me, at least) didn't feel exploitastic. I only hope that this title is better than Security Breach.
Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

"On the 360, PS2 and PC" means it's not going to be amazing. The PS2 version is basically going to be ported up (with better graphics obviously) to the other two platforms, meaning that the limitations of whatever engine they use will still be present.

"Secret Service takes place on Inauguration Day in Washington D.C. An extremist assault has been launched against the capitol - security has been compromised and it is unclear who is friend or foe."

I already know its going to be a shitty game.

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

I disagree with the publishing of this game because it trivializes the Secret Service's other mission: stopping counterfieting.

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

Remember SWAT? In that game, you also played the role of the SWAT, and there was a mission in it, if I remember correctly, that had you save the president.

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the President?

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

That's what this games needs, Ninjas dressed in blue!

Re: Presidential Protection is Theme of Upcoming Secret Service

Didn't they already do a Secret Service game?

It was rather lame, though it did have some high points. I don't expect much about this.
