Circuit City Facing Game Over

Circuit City Facing Game Over

October 15, 2008

Electronics retailer Circuit City appears to be terminally ill, according to StreetInsider. Pointing to an analysis by KeyBanc, the site says that the end could come soon:

We believe a Circuit City bankruptcy has become a question of "when" rather than "if." We now expect bankruptcy in 2009, perhaps as early as the 1Q. The wild card in the equation remains vendors. If one major vendor were to cut off Circuit City, we would expect others to quickly follow suit...

Aside from its electronics business, GamePolitics has learned that Circuit City currently handles 5-10% of all retail sales of video games.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

...Not gonna say it. But I know some of you guys are thinking it...

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

...Anything found at Circuit city can be found elsewhere at cheaper price? Close enough?

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

I was thinking more along the lines of Magic_Taco's first post... I just didn't want to be the one getting the smack for 'summoning' JT.

I wouldn't know about Circuit City's prices since i never really shop there. No store close to where i live. I remember the last time i did go, though, they had pretty good stuff, though.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

I have yet to see a Circuit City with video games in it...  ...of course I rarely go to a Circuit City anymore either.  Back in the 90s Circuit City and Radio Shack were great companies that were rather helpful.  Now they just suck.

Circuit City has been rounding the drain for about 8 years in my opinion, and I wouldn't doubt they somehow pull out of this, but we will see.  Their prices suck, their employees know jack squat, and they have poor selection.  I will even pick BestBuy over them, but I choose online overall for anything that cost over $50 typically.  It is normally far cheaper else wise.

Oh, btw...  Am I an idiot, or am I not alone in not knowing that you don't need a KVM cable to control 2 computers at once with the same mouse and keyboard?  I found a program that makes it seem like I am running only 1 computer with dual monitors, with the ability of 2 computers...  Maybe I am behind everyone else, but I thought it was sweet as hell, and a lot better than paying $30 for a cable...

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

Are you actually using two computers or are both computers essentially one machine wiht twice the specs?

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

I know that some of the others on this site may not agree, but I will be very sad if Circuit City goes.

As a former employee of the company, I can say that I was always treated fairly, was considered in decisions, was never pressured to do more business than is possible on a given day, and overall enjoyed the time I spent there.  My husband just happened to work at a certain big blue electronics store at the same time and the ways that our companies differed was monumental.  For example, when his store found out where I worked, they accused him of having a conflict of interest.  When CC found out where my husband worked, the store manager told me that we would just have to try hard to convert him from the "dark side".

I hope that CC can hold on, as there are few large retail companies out there that treat their employees as if they are human beings, and from my experience CC was great at that.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

From what I remember they were friendly and helpful at Circuit City and it was where my family got its first computer so there is nostalgia for me atleast with Circuit City.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

Awww...And i got the 1st diablo game cheaper at that store,Along with my first laptop computer, Mmm....I hope the store can hold on and pull through.

(guys,I get the feeling that idiot JT may troll soon these post claiming he caused CC to fall.)

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

Why don't you just draw the signs and start the summoning ritual while your at it?

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

As a former customer of Circuit City I can't wait for it to go under.  Why?  Because their sales approach sucks.  Whenever I go there I feel like a hunted animal.  At some times I've been approached by up to five employees within five minutes of entering the store, asking if I needed help, and even if I say yes they are almost always clueless because all they know is where the departments are.  I can figure that out by myself.  One time when I did make the mistake of asking for an employee to help me find something, he led me on a wild goose chase for five minutes, then finally told me that they didn't have the item in question.  I looked a little more and found it all by myself in less time!

When I go into a store, if I have questions I prefer to seek out an employee and ask.  Otherwise, I want to be left alone to browse, but Circuit City is the least likely of any store to let me do so.  Eventually I decided that Circuit City was too stressful to even bother with.  If they can't let me shop unmolested I prefer to shop elsewhere.  Their financial troubles, in my opinion, stem from their heavy-handed approach to customers - they are even worse than Best Buy.  Like I said, I'll be glad when Circuit City is gone.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

While their sales people are a bit pushy, I never really had problems with CC.  I just bought my second TV from them (63" Samsung...drool) and got pretty good deals on both, plus some good 0% financing.

Their "protection" plans are utter jokes.  My first Samsung I bought from them had an issue 3 months after I got it.  I first called CC to have it fixed, and they sent out a 3rd party repairman who couldn't fix it because he had never dealt with a Plasma TV.  I then got it fixed through the manufacturers warranty, which was great- Samsung has the best customer support I have ever seen in an electronics manufacturer.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

Serves them right for cutting wages sometime ago.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

I almost never went to Circuit City...but I always liked it better than Best Buy

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

Good riddance. False advertising lawsuits, unfair arbitration agreement with the employees, legal warranty plan problems, labor law violations, not to mention terrible attempts at competing with the DVD market. Working for them was hell, full of back stabbers and sharks. It was like working for an evil car dealer that only takes your soul as credit, and makes it's employees practice gerbil rituals.

Re: Circuit City Facing Game Over

I remember Circuit City for its bad customer service. Seriously- it seemed like any location I went to was filled with people hired SPECIFICALLY to drive customers away. But yeah, the plethora of it's problems were also at the forefront when it came to how bad it was.

That said, I don't think anybody is, or will ever be, surprised at the current state of fail plaguing the chain.

DarkSaber: Although, unsurprisingly, he's just being called an idiot alot and criticised for being as illegible as always.

DarkSaber: Oh good lord, I just found Zippy on The Escapist.
Posted 02/09/10 at 03:14pm
Valdearg: IE: Male body/Female Mind or Female Body/Male Mind.
Posted 02/09/10 at 03:13pm
Valdearg: @Zip: TG == Transgendered/Transsexual.
Posted 02/09/10 at 03:09pm
DarkSaber: Forget it Zippy, it's an abbreviation of a big word and so would be wasted on you
Posted 02/09/10 at 03:07pm
ZippyDSMlee: Vlag:....TG?
Posted 02/09/10 at 03:02pm
Valdearg: @DS: Im sure that's what they'd do if it wasn't legal to just tell Gays/TG's to "Screw off," just because they're who they are.
Posted 02/09/10 at 02:50pm
DarkSaber: Whoever told him/her/it that is dumb. They should have done like most companies and made-up some bullshit, yet legal, reason for it not getting the job.
Posted 02/09/10 at 01:18pm
Valdearg: I do agree that it shouldn't be legal. That's for sure.
Posted 02/09/10 at 01:16pm
Andrew Eisen: Shouldn't be. Spirit of anti-discrimination laws would seem to include sexual orientation (and eye color). Plus there's always equal protection and such. Never know until you try.
Posted 02/09/10 at 01:14pm
Valdearg: @AE: Doubtful. Again, it's perfectly legal.
Posted 02/09/10 at 01:10pm
Andrew Eisen: Should have sued (unless that wasn't an option given her financial situation or something). Might have won.
Posted 02/09/10 at 01:00pm
Valdearg: Story about a Male to Female TG who was expressly told she wouldn't be given a job because she was TG. Its not the main point of the story, but explicit, perfectly legal discrimination like this exists.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:53pm
Valdearg: Lol, I don't know. It may very well be legal to do so. Though that might able to fall under the "race" restriction, depending on how that point is argued.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:51pm
Valdearg: I don't think they do have any legal recourse. I'll have to dig around, but I seriously believe that if the law doesn't specifically mention Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity, they can still be discriminated against in those 29 states.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:51pm
Andrew Eisen: Eye color isn't covered either but I doubt it would be considered legal to refuse to hire people with green eyes.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:48pm
Andrew Eisen: My explanation is longer than the Shoutbox will allow. Suffice to say that while those who are discriminated against do have legal recourse, anti-discrimination law should specifically cite sexual orientation so that there’s no question about it.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:42pm
Valdearg: "There is no federal law that consistently protects LGBT individuals from employment discrimination; it remains legal in 29 states, and in 38 states to do so based on gender identity or expression." From the Human Rights Campaign.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:40pm
Valdearg: @AE: Why don't you think I'm correct? I know Wiki could be flawed, but as far as it says, its up to date as of June 2009.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:39pm
Andrew Eisen: I don't think you're right but I really don't know and don't have the time to find out. However things actually are, it's very clear how they actually should be.
