Re: Top 10 Video Game Politicians

Hmm, this list is familiar, I think I've read the same entries elsewhere. Perhaps the author posted it there first. Michael Wilson for the win!

Re: Top 10 Video Game Politicians

They were printed on the last EGM magazine (no surprise, since EGM owns 1-up).

Yay Metal Wolf Chaos! What diplomacy is more badass than fighting in giant mechas on the front lawn of the White House?

Don't Forget President Max and Vice President Spatula! (Sam & Max Season 1)

Re: Top 10 Video Game Politicians

Where's John Henry Eden?  He's made up of personality samples of all the best presidents!

Re: Top 10 Video Game Politicians

Even though he was cast as villainous, though perhaps not a villain, Andrew Ryan was my favorite part of Bioshock.

The reality of it is that he was a terrible politician -- he's too idealistic, and has too much faith in his fellows. His philosophy, that anyone who wants to and works for it can succeed wildly is a very motivational concept. It's a pure strain of the 'American Dream' ideal; success is just a short journey away.

But of course, the problem is in how uncaring such a system is. In a land of limited resources, if someone is rich, that means someone else is poor, and generally, there are more poor than rich. Combine this with people willing to manipulate the downtrodden and cast the heartlessness of such a purely free market as it's primary characteristic, and you get anarchy; Bioshock represented this with riots, followed by bad decisions that lead Rapture to its final state.

But ultimately, Ryan just wanted a place where people are rewarded for their efforts, and where failure can't be blamed on anyone except those who failed.

For the most part, this list is pretty lame, though. It could have been worse, but obviously they weren't going for a serious comment on politics in games.

Re: Top 10 Video Game Politicians

I thought another tragic part of Bioshock was the people who followed Andrew Ryan. His philosophy said the succesfull people would rule the community, so only succesfull people followed him. They forgot you need people with less than stellar careers to. Somebody has to take out the garbage, clean the toilets, etc. It's a fact many objectivists forget.

Re: Top 10 Video Game Politicians

It's true, though a true modern utopia would develop methods to circumvent this inequity. Have the bad jobs dealt with by robots, or other automated systems, for example.

This doesn't solve the problem thoughl, and could perhaps aggrevate it. (Those who took out the garbage are replaced, and then they have no earnings let alone meager ones.) So such maneuvering should be done with care. And of course, once everything is automated, will we still be inclined to work -- to acheive, to advance? or will we just allow our caretakers to perform while we fall to sloth?

It becomes rather hard to predict, but the advent for computers gives us some insight -- Computers let people do ten times as much work in the same amount of time. People hearded it, believing this meant that we'd soon be working a tenth as much as before, but ultimately, it meant we began doing ten times the work instead.

Ahh Bad Dudes! That game ruled my childhood. Their version of the Konami code was super long and harder to input.

Re: Top 10 Video Game Politicians

Neo_DrKefkaOnly good thing I seen come out of the Biddle incident was the fact a professional fighter offered to give 10k to an anti bullying charity for a round in the ring with Biddle.10/19/2014 - 7:49pm

Neo_DrKefkaI believe the problem #GamerGate has with Sam Biddle is he is apart of this blogging group that in a way hates or detests its readers. Also being apart of the crowd that claims its on the right side of history isn't helping when he is advocating bullying10/19/2014 - 7:45pm
MechaTama31Of course, I'm looking at these tweets in isolation, I don't know a thing about the guy.10/19/2014 - 7:06pm
MechaTama31If anything, the sarcastic implication seems to be that the SJW crowd is bringing back the bullying of nerds. But it's the GGers who are out for his blood? I'm lost...10/19/2014 - 7:01pm
MechaTama31I don't really get this Sam Biddle thing. The reaction to his tweets seems to be taking them at face value, but... they're tongue in cheek. Right?10/19/2014 - 7:00pm
