Due to rampant IP piracy, the video game market in China is largely centered around subscription-based online games.
But the Beijing government has apparently taken notice of complaints by the United States and other nations over copyright violations. Hence this government billboard, found in the city's Haidian District. It reads, "Strike Hard at Piracy."
The billboard image is included in a roundup of Chinese public advertising compiled by the Transnational China Project at Rice University.

Re: Beijing Billboard Urges Chinese to Drop the Hammer on Piracy
What with two stories about China and what's coming out next week, all I can say is so much for "Chinese Democracy," eh?
Re: Beijing Billboard Urges Chinese to Drop the Hammer on Piracy
The billboard probably won't have any effect, but at least their heart is in the right place. For the most part, I dispise pirating. I dispise even more that most pirates think they have some legitimate reason for doing it. "The money isn't going where I think it should go." "I wasn't planning on buying that game, anyway." "Hey, everyone is doing it." Whatever, that's just trying to justify something they know is wrong. It's no different from shoplifting. Pirates aren't some romantacised rogues, they're just common thieves.
Still, I think there's at least one scenario where the developers and the government are just wasting money attacking pirates. In countries or regions where the standard of living is so low, there's no way anyone could buy the games legitimately. I'm not condoning the actions there, either, I'm just saying that the developers really aren't losing money in those instances, and they shouldn't bother cracking down in those areas.
Haidian District is basically a "college town," so these people have money. There's no good reason for pirating there. The billboard is still silly, though.

Damn I wish I lived in China now, I'd give away free knockoffs of the sign just for a laugh
Re: Beijing Billboard Urges Chinese to Drop the Hammer on Piracy
This billboard would have been better:
Piracy is bad....mmmkay....don't do piracy....mmmkay....if you do piracy that makes you bad....mmmkay
Re: Beijing Billboard Urges Chinese to Drop the Hammer on Piracy
I just had to say thank you for the laugh.

At current rates, I doubt a billboard will do much at all...

Strengthen corporations, and screw over consumers, stop piracy.

Re: Beijing Billboard Urges Chinese to Drop the Hammer on Piracy
I have no sympathy for major developers when it comes to piracy, their losses in the overall scheme of things are generally insignificant. Same goes with the major record labels; the people who deserve the $$$ don't get it, some corporate bank account just gets more and more padded.
So, until they make a way for my cash to make it to the game development teams, as one can do with music now when bands release albums independently, pirate on good soldier, pirate on.
Re: Beijing Billboard Urges Chinese to Drop the Hammer on Piracy
Agreed... At least musicians are now wising up and selling their music for free, or even offering it for free online for donation, and still make more money than if they went through a record company of any kind. It is what the record companies get for screwing over the artists. Now it is time for it to happen in the game industry, and it spread across the world as common practice.

If you're using a metaphorical hammer... why not use a bigger one?
