Police in Winnipeg believe that a quartet of youthful offenders were acting out in video game-like fashion by stealing cars and fleeing from pursuing officers.
CBC reports on comments by Sgt. Doug Safioles:
They all play the game, they talk about the game, they tell their probation officers it's a game. It's a huge rush. They taunt the police on purpose to engage in chases.
Safioles, who did not link the teens to a specific game, made similar comments in May. At that time, however, a youth advocate linked the crimes to the region's high level of poverty.
Meanwhile, in Australia, the Daily Telegraph reports that Superintendent Dave Evans of the New South Wales police has blamed video games for a lack of responsibility on the part of teen drivers:
Video games can have a negative impact on young drivers because it increases their complacency and their indulgence in risk-taking behaviour. In games you race, you crash and it is a matter of pressing the buttons and off you go again. In real life it doesn't work that way, you can be killed.

If anything games have shown me how dangerous driving under the influence is. Take GTA4 for example driving home after going drinking with ur homie is almost impossible to do without crashing mulitple times.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I kinda see the connection but at the same time i also see that this is blown out of porportion two.
As for Jack, you shouldn't call someone retarded. Makes you look more of a mentally challegned person, mayby your parents were retarted, or mayby you can't grow up like I can. In fact, piss off, your wasting my time here even being on here.

"These are the same bran scan studies"
Mr Thompson I would ask that you please keep bran out of this, I know in your old age it helps you little tummy feel better but lets talk about the issues.
That is all.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Nothing scrubs a colon like a fistful of bran, I tell you what.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
As long as there have been cars there have been dumbasses that steal them and joy ride. How is that news?
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Take a look at the driving car accidents of the last 50 years, and the numbers...
People were driving at a faster speed back then than they did now,
they did not wear seat belts.
They even had dogs, cats and other pets sit in their laps while driving.
And now people are looking at blaming Videogames for today's car crashes?
I know that there is a hoon culture but it has been there for many years since the invertion of the cars. But to blame videogames for the skills of young P platers when the problems in society have been going on for many years before videogames is just plan reckless and does not solve any problems at all.

Notice the slight dip in crimes in 1984. I like to take credit for that. My birth truly was miraculous... wait, I was born in December, which means that when I was born, violent crimes were goign up after an all time now! Aw hell, what have I done?!

Crime Statistics for Miami Dade Police.
http://www.disastercenter.com/florida/crime/1834.htm
Please note that in 1995 there were 20,000 Vehicle Thefts
Also note that in 2005, there were just over 7,000 vehicle thefts, a reduction of nearly 13,000
It's the same story in the UK, a massive reduction in vehicle crime over the last decade.
Those are the facts.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Since the police never specifically mentioned what game the kids all played... I'm going to assume that it's Beautiful Katamari.

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
The obvious solution is to make in-game griefing illegal.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Blame bumper cars. They teach you to hit other people, push the gas pedal to the floor, and you are in a car like environment.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I don't know. Every time I've driven bumper cars the operator tells everyone not to deliberately ram the other drivers. I always found myself wondering, "Well what's the point then?"
Andrew Eisen
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Seriously!? That's nuts. Talk about totally missing the point.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
More importantly, they teach you road rage.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
These "kids" were 16 and 17. They know right from wrong. They know that they could die or kill someone.
Unless you're completely psychotic or flat-out retarded, you do not confuse the rules of a game with the rules of real life.

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Umm... I've known plenty of teens who refuse to consider the consiquence of their actions. Hell, I know a lot of adults who suffer from the same problem.
People sometimes use bad judgement... it's been known to happen.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Oh indeed but there's a huge difference between bad judgment and not being able to separate fantasy from reality.
Andrew Eisen
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I dunno. I kind of see them as two sides of the same coin.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Put another way: just because a kid doesn't think he's going to die as a result of driving like an ass doesn't mean he thinks he can hit reset the universe if he does.

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
A childs sense of reason and knowing the difference between right and wrong is learned over time and doesnt just click when they turn 18.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
True.
I take it you're just adding to my initial comment?
Andrew Eisen
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Yes, and that's what all of these politictions don't realize. A Pre-schooler may not know the difference but a 16 year old would.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
So, what is to blame for people who got into high speed chases and shot at police prior to the invention of the video game?
The same as it is now...the person who did the crime!
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Dirty Dancing was to blame.

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Because video games are the only the only types of games there are
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Of course. It couldn't possibly be that they think stealing cars and running from the cops is a game in itself. They must be talking about video games.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I think my dad (and the rest of the world) should be thankful my real driving and GTA driving are completely seperate.
In GTA even if i'm trying my hardest to drive well, going slow, watching the lights for cross traffic and everthing, i still usually end up torching the car in about 5 minutes.
In real life i haven't had an accident yet.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
In all honesty, I had no idea GTA had functioning traffick lights until Vice City; you really don't pay close attention with your acceleration cranked while you thumb the handbrake.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
That's the funny/weird thing about it. even if i'm trying my best to obey the virtual traffic laws because
a) my luck it'll attract a wanted level and i'm trying to keep a low profile
or
b) Like the car i'm in
That gets screwed about two seconds in an next thing you know i'm defying physics with hand brake turns and flooring it so hard the pedal should break just like you. that's when gta gets real good.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
There's a cheat to make the lights green all the time and for more aggressive drivers. Put both in and hilarity can ensue.
Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
Mr Thompson, you've spent the past couple of decades calling yourself a "moral crusader" or a "culture warrior." But there is NOTHING at all cultured about you celebrating every time a massacre occurs, and there is NOTHING at all moral about you glorifying the abuse and deaths of youngsters while lying through your anus-shaped mouth about a video game you've never seen in your wasted life being the direct cause of the world's ills. VIDEO GAMES DO N-O-T JUMP UP AND SHOOT PEOPLE DEAD, YOU CORPSE-RAPING IDIOT.
You falsely condemn make-believe violence while supporting and encouraging real violence. You take pride in doing a worse job at "protecting the children" than registered sex offenders. You are "living" proof that self-claimed moral crusaders are no better than terrorists, and entirely deserve to be treated as such. Now go back to your no-name blog - it seems to be the only place that is willing to overlook your criminal record of slander, deceit, fruad, intimidation, perjury and intent to cause physical harm.

Jack Thompson is a terrorist.

He even admitted it.

Geaux Saints, Geaux Tigers, Geaux Pelicans. Solidarity for the Saints = No retreat, no surrender. 2013 = Saints' revenge on the NFL. Even through the darkest days, this fire burns always.
Re: Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
Someone go light the torches. I'm off to get the pitchforks. A-wel, for your crimes you are to be conscripted into assisting with the execution of a traitor. You set up the stake and lay some wood around it. Then I want you to soak both stake and woodpile in gasoline. Here's the tank of gasoline. *hands him a gasoline tank* Let's move, people!
Kidding. But this should show you what Americans do to traitors.

Whoa now, corpses are not technically sound of mind and body and cannot consent, so its not rape.
Re: Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
Nooo, that's just necrophilia. There's nothing wrong with that. [/sarcasm]

Re: Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
Whats bad, Necrophilia isn't illegal. It's the desecration of a corpse thats illegal.

Re: Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
I'd like to hear your take on how one can love a corpse without desecrating it. Its like a chicken or the egg thing, isn't it?
Re: Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
Exactly. They couldn't figure out how to legally write laws against Necrophillia and beastiallity, so they outlawed the actual acts (Aka violation of a corpse and animal abuse).
Kinda like the Sodomy laws. They can't outlaw homosexuality so they outlaw homosexual SEX.
Hunting the shadows of the troubled dreams.
Re: Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
That wording would put it in statuatory rape.
Hunting the shadows of the troubled dreams.
Re: Jack Thompson Fantasises About Violent Crimes, Yet Again.
That's... sadly the legal reasoning behind why necrophelia and beastiality are illegal. The fact they had to come up with that legal jargon to say you shouldn't be screwing dead people and animals is sad.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Maybe if some video game exec whose company makes a car-steling game has his daughter tragically run over by a stolen car driven by a teen, then the industry will "get it." If cops get shot and killed because of a cop-killing game, no problem for people like Strauss Zelnick. That's somebody else's tragedy, right Strauss? Jack Thompson

Jack, Jack, Jack. You still don't get it. Video game does not cause REAL-LIFE VIOLENCE. You do and your freakin activist who are probably covering up their bad parenting charges. I think you're the freakin conspiracy, you want to destroy the first amendment, so therefore you're a communist and a spawn of Stalin, Hitler, and Mao Zedong.
