Police in Winnipeg believe that a quartet of youthful offenders were acting out in video game-like fashion by stealing cars and fleeing from pursuing officers.
CBC reports on comments by Sgt. Doug Safioles:
They all play the game, they talk about the game, they tell their probation officers it's a game. It's a huge rush. They taunt the police on purpose to engage in chases.
Safioles, who did not link the teens to a specific game, made similar comments in May. At that time, however, a youth advocate linked the crimes to the region's high level of poverty.
Meanwhile, in Australia, the Daily Telegraph reports that Superintendent Dave Evans of the New South Wales police has blamed video games for a lack of responsibility on the part of teen drivers:
Video games can have a negative impact on young drivers because it increases their complacency and their indulgence in risk-taking behaviour. In games you race, you crash and it is a matter of pressing the buttons and off you go again. In real life it doesn't work that way, you can be killed.

Please don't just post your sig. And doing nothing is worse that reacting. It's like sitting back and watching a drunk and abusive father tell you how stupid you are: it gives us (or at least me) the same damned feeling.

Except in real life its the cops that come to a pedestrian related collision first, which makes things awkward.
"Sir, why did you strike this old woman with your car?"

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
No, No, they're absolutely right. Driving games have impacted my style. I've literally piled ferrari's into concrete banners at 60 mph in driving games, and having seen what can happen; I have absolutely no desire to reproduce the experience.
Anybody dumb enough to not understand that there are basically 4 things in this life that you do not want to purposely antagonize, gets what they deserve. Accidents happen, sure, people make mistakes, sure, but when certain agents/agencies are unhappy, nothing good can come of it. 1) the wife, 2) the cops, 3) the IRS, 4) DoD.

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I remember my father and uncles talking about doing that when they were teenagers. Said they were bored to tears and it gave them and the cops something to do. This was when muscle cars were around, with the huge back tires and what-not.
Must have been video games back then too.

Game on, brothers and sisters.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I went to high school in the suburbs and hung with a mostly older crowd. I heard a lot of stories from bored teenagers about getting stoned and/or drunk and running from the cops. The popular video games at the time were things like Galaga and Joust. If those games had any effect, it was that when you were playing them you were in the local pizza parlour drinking pepsi and not at a friends house drinking alcohol or doing drugs or driving around like an idiot. Video games were by far the least destructive thing that we actually enjoyed doing.
From what I am able to observe that hasn't changed much. The games have just gotten more realistic (Well... that and they've moved to the console so that you can be at your friends house drinking at the same time ;-)
What I see today is that teens are being encouraged not to play video games, because of the perception it is harmful even though it is one of the few activities that distracts them from doing actual harm to themselves and others. The old standby activities are still there - drinking, drugs, unprotected sex, vandalism, reckless/impaired driving. The biggest difference is that now when they get caught they know that they can just blame it on the games.
This isn't really a new thing. Those of you who were around in the 80s might remember all the fuss about Dungeons and Dragons which was ostensibly the same.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I wish we could invent something to divert the scapegoating away- no, not a new form of media. Rather, a holy grail of culture that will make people future-proof for any potential culture shock that technology might bring us.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Absolutely the video games... I know someone who has ran from the cops 8 times and gotten away every time. He modified his car to go fast and turn fast, and be able to go off road. (rally style mods)

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Based upon brain scan studies referenced in a State Farm ad about teen driving, done by the National Institutes for Health and cited by Justice Kennedy in Roper v. Simmons, which, in March 2005, struck down the juvenile death penalty. These are the same bran scan studies that show video games are processed in this risk-taking, copycatting part of a teen's brain. Do you have any more stupid questions, Erik? Jack Thompson

So Jack,
I want to see those proof. rule #1 of arguments, always have a good evidence. You were known to fake up evidence and just moan and moan and bitchin around convincing people that video game were the cause of violence.
Yeah I'm sure Charles Whitman in the 1966 when he shoot up University of Texas, he was on CounterStrike.
So were the Chechen Rebels that killed bunch of little students in Russia, was that Counterstrike fault?
So was the Kent State Massacre caused by Counterstrike in 1970 before Atari 2600 was released.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I thought people like that were 'overeducated,' Mr. Thompson?
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Anyone whose taken basic psychology (like yours truly) knows there is no copycat center in the brain; there are parts of ones brain dedicated to learning, sensory, memory, etc. Care to revise your statement, Mr. Thompson?
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Yes. Then why has juvenile crime dropped in the years since GTA has been released according to the FBI. You have no idea just how vast the gaming population is. Those you claim killed due to games, such as in Columbine, are statistically irrelevant compared to the tax paying, law abiding majority who has not had anything more serious than a parking ticket.
-Ultimately what will do in mankind is a person's fear of their own freedom-
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
CIA has stats about it too. It was about violent crimes at different age groups, and how it dropped most in the younger age groups, but it was a drop across all age groups over the years. I looked at the release of the first GTA, and it matches up to the same year the violent crimes started to drop. Not saying they are directly related, but that it is not causing more.

...and?
just like you fail to understand correlation and causation, you fail here too.
Even taking what you say at face value, just because the same part of the brain were used, it means only that, its the same part of the brain. Doesnt mean anything more on its own.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
I want to know just what part of the brains is supposedly responsible for "risk-taking" and "Copycatting" to start with and just how such behavior is supposedly linked to video-games.
And Thompson.:Put up or shut up!.

Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
ITs totally a dumb thing for even disbarredGuy to say.
I mean put it this way.
Lets say i have a certain number of existing sections in my brain to deal with different things.
Each time i learn a new thing, my brain doesnt magically grow an extra kilogram of brain tissue just so it has an entirely new area to learn/process something. It just uses some of the tissue it already has.
So if i learned a new activity tomorrow, e.g. golf, i dont grow a new 'golf' section. My brain just deals with it using the exiting tissue it has. This may well be an area also used for something else. Doesnt mean its related necessarily.
Re: Cops See Video Game Connection in Stolen Cars, Wild Driving
Yeah I know. He just has used that phrasing so many times I had to ask.

Do you remember what Hal Halpin said in response to Doug Lowenstein's letter after Thompson's disbarment? He said that he wish he had done something sooner than let JT have the only voice at the podium for so long.
If we don't retaliate and smush this insect of a person into the ground every so often, people without common sense and a critically thinking mind will listen to him and become his little army of sheeple. I really wish I could ignore him; believe me, I'd love it if I could forget about him and he'd go away! But he won't quit; because I have a voice, I won't quit either. I'll stop when he admits defeat, is convicted, committed, passes away from old age or sickness (I'm guessing the first one, since he's about three decades older than me), excommunicated, or is completely and utterly humiliated; not just in the gaming media, but in the national media, or better, the world media. I really would love to ignore him and have him just go away, but it won't be that simple. As long as he is here, spouting his hate, belching I'll stay right here, standing against him, parrying his arguments.
