Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

November 30, 2008

Black Friday kicked off the holiday shopping season and, for third straight year, Nintendo's Wii console remains a smoking hot gift choice, according to PriceGrabber.com.

The well-trafficked price comparision site lists top products searched for by consumers. Its most recent results, which include Black Friday data, show the Wii at #1 and the Wii Fit exercise board/game at #4.

Despite recent economic conditions, a press release cites an 11% uptick in Black Friday traffic at PriceGrabber over 2007's numbers. Pointing to sales driven by retailer discounts, PriceGrabber Ron LaPierre remarked:

Prior to the Black Friday weekend, 71 percent of shoppers intended to spend less money this holiday season compared to last year and 66 percent planned to give practical gifts. Thanksgiving and Black Friday traffic shows that value drives consumer spending. Consumers are responding to aggressive promotions and price drops on popular electronics.

Although the PriceGrabber list is heavily populated by Ugg boots, digital cameras, laptops and flat-screen TVs, there are several game items in the top 200. Following the Wii and Wii Fit are:

  • #21 Xbox 360 Premium System
  • #34 80GB PlayStation 3
  • #37 Xbox 360 Pro 60GB
  • #54 PSP Slim
  • #112 Xbox 360 Elite Bundle
  • #114 PS3 Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle
  • #147 Xbox 360 Elite
  • #160 Cobalt/Black DS Lite
  • #163 Guitar Hero World Tour Band Kit (PS3)
  • #164 40 GB PS3
  • #165 Guitar Hero World Tour Band Kit (Wii)
  • #167 Xbox 360 Arcade Holiday Bundle
  • #168 Gears of War 2
  • #169 PSP Core System
  • #187 Guitar Hero World Tour Band Kit (360)

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

The Wii continues to sell well and so does the Wii Fit and Wii Play titles, but I want to see what the console to game ratio is for the average Wii owner.  I had heard that outside of those two titles and Wii Sports (which was included with most of the consoles bought), the sales of actual games are rather low.  Still, if anyone can find out, I would be interested in knowing.

The success of the Wii is not really something that I am shocked by, though, it appealed to people that don't usually play games and offered a unique interface that most people simply 'had to experience'.  That said, I don't really know of anyone personally that plays the device routinely, and those that own a Wii and another console (PS3 or 360) seem to almost totally ignore the little white rectangle. I will be buying one as soon as Monster Hunter Tri drops though, I love smashing some Wyvern face.

Edit:

Also, HOLY SHIT! Is the PSP outselling the DS right now?

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

According to that site almost half of the close to 40 million games that have been sold on the Wii are First party titles while the bulk of the titles on the 360 and the PS3 are third party titles. If I were a third party developer, I would be more focused on releasing a game for the 360 or PS3 given those statistics.

I was impressed with the number of units sold for Smash Brothers Brawl and Mario Kart though.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

I don't really think that it is anything to fret over if you are a third party dev. I think it just means that the average Wii owner just doesn't buy as many games as a 360 or PS3 owner.

Let's think about it this way. When someone buys a Wii, one of the first games they get is Wii Play. This is obvious as it is constantly in the top ten every month. They get that for the bundled Wii Remote. So that accounts for 1 of the 2.4 1st party titles. Next they buy one of the other 1st party titles that have a lot of great reviews. So SSB or Mario Galaxy. But after that they buy 3 3rd party games.

So for every two to 3 1st party games, they are buying a minimum of 3 3rd party games. I think that is a solid investment. It also shows that they are a bit more picky when it comes to 3rd party games. Think of all the third party games compared to 1st party. The ratio is easily 5:1 in favor of  third party. But when you look at all the crap that is contained in the 3rd party side, you can see why they stop at 3 titles. If there were more quality 3rd party titles, I could see that tie in ration increase in favor of 3rd party even more. It could easily look more like the PS3 and 360.

So from my look at it, the problem lies in the quality of 3rd party games. Not the prevelance of 1st party games. Increase the quality of 3rd party games and the numbers sold will increase.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

The average quality of 3rd party games is directly related to the target console market. Wii is mainly marketed toward non-gamers who tend not to know they've bought a shitty game. This gives publishers the incentive to use less and less QA alongside more and more licensed IPs. The Wii is this generation's shovelware platform.

For example my daughter only cares that the characters in the game are cute or recognizable from TV. Quality or play or controller issues are the last thing she lets cross her mind.

Seanbaby of EGM fame has some input in this topic, as his job is to play the worst games he can find then make fun of them.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

Okay...two things,

1. IF that were true, don't you think that they would be buying more games in general then?

2. Are you seriously comparing your child's taste in games to the taste in games of the MILLIONS of ADULT Wii owners? I cannot fathom how you make that comparison. Are you seriously saying that all those adults who pick and choose the books they read and the movies and tv shows they watch to best suit their tastes in entertainment are going to be lulled in by the crap that is shoved on the Wii?

The way I look at it, the low game to console ratio of the Wii is the proof that the owners of the Wii have more descriminating taste than the 3rd party devs are alloting them. Seriously, if they did not know the difference between a good game and the average slag on the Wii, there would be a huge surge of game sales. But that surge is not there and that leads me to believe that Wii owners are holding out for more quality gaming experiences.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

or as most third party developers would look at it, nintendo actually puts out quality games for the most part, as such they get perchased

Also nintendo has a much higher first party to third party release ratio then the other 2 systems, so it bears to reason the ratio of their first party games would reflect that

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

I don't see why many people think the Wii is boring, it has tons of games from different genres.  The Xbox 360 and PS3 has mostly shooters.

That would be some numbers I would like to see. The genre saturation of each console. I will have to look to see if I can find those numbers.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

While it's hardly scientific, I checked mobygames.com and had a look at their totals:

Xbox 360 games on record: 457
Xbox 360 games under Action-Shooter: 135 (30%)
Xbox 360 games under Action-1st Person-Shooter: 72 (16%)

PS3 games on record: 231
PS3 games under Action-Shooter: 67 (29%)
PS3 games under Action-1st Person-Shooter: 44 (19%)

Wii* games on record: 557
Wii* games under Action-Shooter: 107 (19%)
Wii* games under Action-1st Person-Shooter: 22 (4%) (!)

*The Wii list includes Virtual Console titles. The PC isn't a very fair comparison as it has a huge back catalogue that predates FPSes, but:

PC (Windows) games on record: 8237
PC games under Action-Shooter: 1296 (16%)
PC games under Action-1st Person-Shooter: 843 (10%)

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

It is far from boring, so much as it has loads of wasted potential.  When a game is done right, it is truly a great experience (Metroid Prime 3, Medal of Honor Heros 2, No More Heros, Excite Truck, RE4:Wii edition,  and Zack and Wiki to name a few) however many games made for the console have weak controls or are weak shovel ware.

Take a game like Ultimate Alliance 2, for example. That game's controls felt tacked on like mad. Not to say that cross platform titles don't hold up, the Budokai series is made a helluva lot more entertaining thanks to the Wii control scheme.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

I gave my son a choice:

A Wii

A PS3

A Ninetendo DS

A PSP

(Any choice he knows will be a Used console, which would come from EBGames.)

He chose the PSP.  Took awhile to learn about the different versions, but I picked up a used PSP 2000 core system the other day.  And picked up the Media Pro (with USB cable) and the Composite video cord too.  I'll get an 8GB memory stick during the middle of the month paycheck.  His mom and her significant other are buying the games.  And I have GameFly, so there won't be a shortage of games.

I'm surprised he didn't go for the Wii though.  A neighbor has one and he says he likes it.

Thank goodness for the 2 year extended warranty on the Used PSP too.  :)  Wish they still did games with the year warranty.

I'm playin it right now.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

Yeah... that game isn't on the PSP. However the PSP could play an ISO of the PS1 release. I wonder if it's up on the PS store.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

I'm thinking of buying a Wii even though I already own an Xbox360.  The thing is, the Xbox is fine for playing by myself, but there are very few times that I get time to myself.  At other times, my daughter is popping into the room and she's not really allowed to see people getting machine-gunned to death or to see heads being chopped off.  Also, unless I can persuade my wife to play the very few gory FPS games that support split-screen co-op play (which I can't because she finds them too violent) the console basically sits unused most of the time.

With a Wii I can (hopefully) finally get my family involved in gaming - unlike the Xbox, the Wii has lots of sports games and kid-friendly games available, and lots of them have split-screen co-op mode available.

Basically, I feel the Xbox game developers have let people like me down a bit, because they just aren't willing to make enough games for people in my situation.  As far as I can see, the PS3 has the same problem.  Sure, there are a few nonviolent games for PS3 and Xbox360, but usually they don't support split screen co-op mode.  As things stand, there's just no real point in waiting for less violent split-screen co-op mode games to get made for the Xbox, so I may as well get a Wii.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

That is my situation as well. Not enough split screen multiplayer games that can be played with kids present. My 4 year old is really getting into gaming now and love to play with me and I have a hard time finding games to play with him outside of the Wii library.

I like the occasional FPS and such but I prefer playing with people in the same room with me when I play multiplayer. But most are online only. I would also like to see more 3rd person co-op games as well that aren't shooters. The last one I remember was Guantlet Legends.

So big things for me:

Co-op, split screen multiplayer, and themes and graphics I can play with my kids.

Who says they have to be kiddie themes either. My kid loves super hero games. He actually had fun with the Incredibles at my Sister-in-laws this past Thanksgiving. That is the kind of stuff I could have fun with too.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

I wish games could fit under multiple ratings and specific gore/adult elements could be switched off at the console level. That would certainly solve a few of these issues with content inappropriate for families without having to purchase special games.

Re: Wii, Wii Fit Crack List of Top 10 Black Friday Buys

I think Gears of War 2 is a great exapmle of something that should be more common in games. Gears 2 has a content filter in-game that when enabled blocks swearing and changes blood and gore to sparks.
