Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing Fantasy"

December 4, 2008 -

Over at GamerTell scribe PJ Hruschak is a bit frustrated with a security analyst who likened the Mumbai terror attacks to a "video game killing fantasy."

RAND Corp. analyst Brian Jenkins made the comment during a recent interview with NPR's Talk of the Nation:

We’re talking about a warrior subculture here. And I suspect that those who actually carried out the attack certainly were convinced that going down shooting was better than secretly planting bombs in public places... This in a sense for them was an opportunity to demonstrate their conviction, courage, although it doesn’t require a lot of courage to gun down unarmed people, but it becomes a kind of a real-life video game killing fantasy for the actual attackers themselves.

Jenkins probably meant no offense, but his remarks will likely rile some gamers. Hruschak explains:

Taken out of context, that sure sounds like Jenkins is a gamer hater. Really, he’s just trying to give a visual way of describing the attacks for an aural media. It’s more trying to describe the psychological state of the terrorists rather than specifically likening games to terrorist acts.

Even so, describing bombings as “unmanly” (inferring that gunning down innocent people is manly), indicating these terrorists are part of a “warrior subculture” and that “going down shooting” is a “a more attractive ending” and then summarizing it all as a “real-life, video game killing fantasy” should not sit well with many gamers.

After all, how many people has Cooking Mama, er, Mario killed?

Did either of you even READ the article?

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

Of course they didn't. It's not as if the radical anti-anti-gamer people have more brains than Jack.

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

You know what security analyst guy? **** you. Seriously.

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

Why?  Why use the victims and the family who suffered from this terrorist attack as a way to promote your own viewpoints?  165 people died in this attack and all this bastard wants to think about is his own opinion on violent video games.

Just needs a bit of Jack and it's complete.

Not really.  It's nice to be able to discuss the actual articles for a change.

So this is a story about a non-story about a non-issue?  That's like reporting that "Obama reportedly said his favorite color is red, and that is likely to upset a few Smurfs fans, even though no Smurfs fans have even said anything because they know it is completely unrelated."

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

Its an experiment to see how many idiots will get riled up about how they are blaming video games.

Sortableturnip's Law: As an online discussion of video game violence grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Jack Thompson approaches 1

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

oh boy,

I knew this would happen, blame it on video game.  I wonder how long till Jacky boy say Counterstrike or Farcry is to be blame.

Jack Thompson: It was Counterstrike I tell you.  It's very much similar to the game, or maybe Rainbow Six, or maybe Farcry. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA  *running out of the FOX newsroom like crazy*

If I was a anime hater on Youtube and wanting to put the terrorist attack blame on anime.  I would probably say this.

anime hater: We got proof that the anime Gunslinger Girls, and Black Lagoon was used as a training to teach terrorists how to secure the room and shoot anybody on sight.  We also know that the US Armed Forces uses this same anime so they can teach their soldiers how to fire more accurately and it was based on some dumb facts that we just made up.

What a day.

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

Did you even read ANYTHING said in the article?

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

He probably didn't mean it the way it's being percieved, but that doesn't stop brainless politicians and media columnists from picking up the quote and repeating it.

Soon after, Fox news is quoting him as saying that they trained on video games...

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

exactly and they'll push that point alone and shove off anyone who tries to tell it otherwise.

i watched a clip not to long ago where the newscasters cutoff a farmer who'd survived being shot because his cell phone deflected the bullet.

As soon as he tried to throw in a pro gun statement about gun SAFETY they immedietly began to cut him off mid sentance and try to hide it. god forbid someone talks gun safety on the news.

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

I'd think going down fighting is more analogous to many action/war/western movies than video games. Going down in a game ≠ winning, people.

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

 and here we go...

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

I guess Flight Simulator is an Al Quieda Hi Jackers fantasy...

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

They actually used that program for their training as I understood it.

Mama and Mario only kill animals.

Not to mention enslaving long tounged dinosaurs that come in a rainbow of colors.

Re: Security Guy: Mumbai Terror Attack a "Video Game Killing

I like the purple one because he flies....  Lets see, red is fire balls, yellow is ground pound, green is normal.

Think about if we always explained what we meant by what we say to try to prevent from insulting people... over half of what we say would be explaining what we said, wasting time to get our real point across.

I just give him credit for actually drawing a rational description of the situation using video games in the first place.  Granted it was a slam, and he could have said it a little differently to make it better, but not bad for being on a show like that.  Giving a brighter side example using games would have been good too.  Too many people that watch that crap think that games are evil, and we need some good PR on those channels.

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm

Matthew Wilsonthe sad thing is there are trolls on both sides of this. people need to stop acting like their side is so pure.10/18/2014 - 12:19pm
MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
Matthew Wilsonwhile he focused on gg, he did call out both sides crap.10/17/2014 - 7:18pm
