A government minister in Barbados has urged students to abandon violent video games as part of a Say No To Violence campaign.
As reported by The Nation Newspaper, Minister of Family, Youth and Sports Esther Byer-Suckoo (left) made the remarks at a school in St. George on Friday:
Let the violence go!
This means that we are not going to get angry and look to cuff, bite and kick people. We are not going to look to use any weapons and we are not going to be watching that stuff on television or in our video games either.
Because when you keep watching that violence and playing it on the video games, it becomes part of your lifestyle and something you think you can do when somebody gets you angry.
The game violence issue appears to be gaining traction in Barbados. In October GamePolitics reported that the head of the local chapter of the National Organization for Women called for a ban on violent video games and toy guns. Minister Byer-Suckoo's comments were also made at a NOW-organized event.
Part of the video game issue in the Caribbean nations appears to be that retail enforcement of ESRB ratings is quite uneven.

Some people in Government think they are doing something when they try to get rid of Violence in real life by blaming videogames.
To me, all I have to say is try to resolve the violence in REAL LIFE!!!! not blaming it all on videogames.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
I don't know what's up with the recent wave of developing countries (Barbados, Thailand, South Africa) getting up in arms about video games, as they are luxuries that most people in developing countries cannot afford to buy. I guess they do have cheaper access to the games in arcades. But the point still stands. They're debating over forms of recreation that are not so common as in richer countries.
Maybe the worry is related to the fact that violent militant activity is more common in developing countries? And that leads to recruiting underage kids in military forces, which already happens in many 3rd world countries with internal struggles.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
Hmm, I wonder what they're going to do when (if) they ban all sorts of violent media and toys but still have violent crimes occuring, probably in even greater numbers since people aren't going to have any media available above the second grade level and are going to go cause trouble.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
To be fair, she is sort of right in a way that media does influence the way you think and how you live and choose your life style. The more time you spend with virtual firearms, the more likely you will be attached to real firearms. The more time you spend with a fantasy world, the more time you will be attracted to that kind of world. And there are specific examples where that happens. Most furries will agree that they are what they are because of media, they spend more time around fuzzy human-animal like people on TV, art, or games the more they admire it.
To her arguement, there is a brick wall you hit with this because of simple human morals. You know shooting innocent people in real life is wrong, and that moral is your sheild against being attracted to violent or wrongful acts. Who develops that sheild? Parents and Teachers.
Guess where your focous should be?
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
Every time I think of "Barbados," I tend to think of that one episode of Futurama where Hermes competes in a limbo dash with a guy named Barbados Slim (or something like that; it's been a long time since I've seen the show).
Goes to show how noteworthy of a country Barbados is... but in all seriousness, you say that Barbados (and the Carribean) has an uneven enforcment of the ESRB ratings. Maybe they should should consider releasing press releases and whatnot encouraging parents to check the ratings and explain how they work. Much like how certain American politicos have been doing recently.
Don't forget about the parental controls on each console.

Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
That would be Season 5 Episode 13, "BendHer" where Bender gets a sexchange and Barbados Slim beats Hermes at Limbo during the 3004 Olympics.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
I honestly have no idea where Barbados is, should I be caring what they think about video games?
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
Why not ban sports too. There is very clear evidence that it causes violence. In hockey, you see fights in every other game. What about the crowd. You see events where dozens of people are dead due to a mass fight while watching sports. You see bar fights due to arguing fans. The list goes on.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
soccer hooligans are a large problem in the uk.
Lots of drunken fans watching matches, starting fights (even riots!).
wierd isnt it, i would bet theres like a 1 - 1000 ratio of violence casued by a violent videogamer, to violence caused by violent drunken soccer thugs, yet nobody ever steps up to take a stand against the one that is an actual significant problem.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
Oh no no no.... That's not violence. That's just people letting of steam or pent up frustrations. It's all in good fun and no one ever gets seriously injured.
Shit...what's with me and sarcasm today? I try to stay off the stuff normally.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
Yes! Ban toy guns! Ban toy guns!
We don't need our children learning how to kill people with their cap guns and their super soakers. Also, I think we should ban sticks. The little brats will try to use THOSE as their learning tools for murder. Then we'll need to cut off their fingers because they'll use those too.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
NEWSFLASH! Talking head says "Blah Blah Blah" without any proof of anything at all. I'm glad she included all media in her statement though that way everyone can join in the rolling of eyes and get a good laugh out of it. While shes at it she should stage a massive rally for everyone to bring their TV to a crusher or something stupid like that. I sincerely hope everyone in Barbados goes along with this whole idea. That way when they still have violence and crimes we can all sit back and laugh at how it did no good.

Oh no! Barbados is declaring war on video games! What ever will we do against such a strong and powerful enemy? </sarcasm>
Seriously...Barbados? I'm fairly certain most people would recognize that as a pirate captain from a recent trilogy of movies before an island nation. The country is so small and insignificants that when they take on something as hot topic today as media violence it's like kids playing "grown up."

Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
Bwahahaha! Oh, that's good...Oh, OH, you mean she was being serious?
Let's see...I play violent games, I absolutely love slasher films, I have a strong interest in various weaponry, especially of the ancient and medieval times, I'm self-teaching myself archery (longbow), and uh, overall, I'm not all that violent. I have some anger issues, and I tend to punch and kick things like doors and walls, but I've never even so much as hit another person with malice intention, let alone assault them.
Even though I'm short-fused, I've never physically harmed anyone during a bout of anger.
So, uh, I'm gonna say "Yes" to violence in entertainment...cause it's entertaining. Have a problem with it, go fuck yourself. I don't listen to bullshit like violent media makes you violent. Yeah, riiiiight.
And besides, the truth is, violence is human nature. If you think it is not, then you have a lot of learning to do. Not saying violence is good, but it's something that cannot be dealt with so simply. When your car breaks down, you don't say "Fill up the gas tank! That'll fix it!" You find out what broke, and fix that.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
''Because when you keep watching that violence and playing it on the video games, it becomes part of your lifestyle and something you think you can do when somebody gets you angry. ''
er.. not for me. 20+ years playing them and it hasnt become part of my lifestyle. it is NOT something i think i can do when somebody gets me angry. In fact i RARELY even get angry. (I actually dont remember the last time i even shouted at somebody).
SO where is the problem? is it with the tv and videogames? or... is it with.... you. Because thats the changing variable here. Not the media.
Im not stupid enough to think that, because i have learned to use my brain to reason things through logically. And i understand that a magic box that displays pictures to me, isnt a guide to what you MUST do in real life. Its somebody elses representation of something.
Just like if a guy tells me 'Hey stick your hand in a fire it feels really nice and soothing', my brain kicks in, and i think.. hmm.. thats his representation, but it may not necessarily be true. I THINK that fire burns. So .. NO.. i will not stick my hand in a fire. Its the SAME THING.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
I'll second that. I am no more violent after playing Tetris than I am after playing Gears of War. It doesn't have to do with the game, but how pissed I get while playing the game. Either way I have had a record of throwing the controller, especially when I was younger with the SNES and N64 controllers, back when they wouldnt break for doing it.
So yeah, it is the person, not the media, this lady needs to learn cause and effect a bit more. Just like people need to learn that global warming isn't caused by humans. Use science, not stupid media encouraged logic that doesn't even put 1 and 1 together.

Unforunately we are fundementally a tribal race designed for competition whether through sports, violence, or other means. I mean technically sports is a violent endevor in a lot of ways. Oddly enough the most violent doesn't always equal the most deaths in a sport either. Horse racing tends to have a lot of injuries and death, does that automatically make it the most violent? It's a dumb plan on a equal level of abstinence. The excess energy should be expelled through some means, and technically video games are not enough. It should be accompanied with an adequate amount of excerise as well.

That's what your wet dreams are for. Also, how is abstinence a bad isea? It has a 0% risk of getting pregnant or getting someone pregnant. The Risk of getting an STD is pretty much 0% unless the person uses drugs or gets a bad blood donation.
While I agree on the violence issue, this point makes no sense to me.

I agree, the same kind of idiots that think that abstenance has a zero percent risk if disease or pregnance are the same kind of idiots who think violent video games have a negitive affect on the player.
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
What the hell are you talking about???
Don't have sex = no pregnancy, no STD. Doesn't even need to be proven, it's just common sense.
How is that like the video game violence debate??

Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
You miss the point the mainstream abstinence only mindset ignores the needs of the body as well as understanding one’s self.
While its true teens and even twenty year olds need to have little if no sexual contact with others just because they are growing and most are far from adult “abstinence only” only leads to more misinformation and stagnation of antiquated ideals that simply do not work in the real world or in the modern world.

Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
I do agree that people need to learn about sex and how their body works. That is a key part of growing up. There is no doubt about that. I am also not saying anything about abstinence only programs. The OP said nothing about it, so I responded directly to his accusation that abstinence was a bad idea.
Abstinence is the only 100% way you can avoid pregnancy and most STDs. How can that be a bad thing?

Well, it's a bad thing when it's the only means of avoiding pregnancy and STDs that is taught. Teaching all of the various means of birth control, and STD protection give people better information to manage risk to themselves if they are unwilling to stick to abstinence.
I think that was Zippy's point. Unless he for some reason things that abstinence is a bad idea period.

Somethings wrong with her cause and effect, playing violent games doesn't mean you'll be violent. I just last night headshotted people in Fallout 3, and I haven't biten anyone in weeks.
And dead lord, no violence at all? What a boring existance!
Re: Barbados Govt. Minister Encourages Students to Say No to
Indeed, in fact, this is a self fulfilling prophecy. As long as morally bankrupt leaders like this are given a soapbox, we can expect this kind of bigotry to continue.
