The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says Analyst

December 9, 2008 -

EA holiday titles Mirror's Edge, Rock Band 2 and Need For Speed: Undercover are all failing to meet sales goals, according to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian.

Future sales of Spore and Warhammer Online may not be so great, either.

As reported by CVG, Sebastian predicts that EA will cut jobs and drop some underperforming game franchises in response. In a note to investors Sebastian writes:

While the video game industry continues to show some resilience in the face of a very challenging consumer environment, strength does not appear to be across the board, and we believe that several EA titles are underperforming expectations at retail.

Specifically, our checks indicate that sell-through trends of key holiday releases Need for Speed Undercover, Rock Band 2, and Mirror's Edge remain mixed, which may reflect some fatigue overall in the music and racing genres.

We believe further cost and franchise reductions are likely. Importantly, we believe EA is continuing to review its cost structure and franchise base, and it is possible that management will announce further cuts in headcount and the development pipeline (including existing franchises) over the coming quarters.

NO. FUCKING. WAY.

Also, love the fact that there is no mention of their sport games.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

EA should perhaps consider cutting down on management types (they have far to many of those apparently), that would save them far more money than dropping franchises with good potential and the developers that go with it. Those earn most of the salaries anyway, devs are notoriously underpayed for the great work they do.

Mirror's Edge was a great concept, but not executed well, the same goes for many other recent new things EA tried.

Dead Space could have been so much better if they got the atmosphere and tension right, as it is now, you know stuff is going to jump out at you whenever a light flikkers...
They can really learn something from the asian style horror games there, not so much startle the player like most US "horror" games do, but make them feel that their character is alone and scared. Let them feel the tension, startling the players gets very old very quickly.
As for the racing games, there are to many of them on the market and they're pretty samey as it is.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

I second the Dead Space comment.  The game isn't horror at all, it's more like a cheap Sci-Fi channel movie, which I'm sure there is a market for since Sci-Fi flicks are produced in droves and somebody must be watching them.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

The only problem with Mirror's Edge is they didn't make it a sports title. Imagine if instead of Tony Hawk being a level by level game with challenges to complete in each section, they'd made up some crazy story that tried to legitimise skating across levels, performing tricks and making gaps to keep momentum, then gone and made the only requirement of actually completing the levels getting from the start to the finish, regardless of how many tricks you pulled, how fast you were, etc.

It would suck.

DICE built this great game mechanic and if you read any of the reviews they will all say it: The Time Trials are where the fun is. It's not fun to try and beat up swat guys in this game. It's not fun to die over and over because you don't know where to go on your first run. It's not fun to have the only real objective being "Get to the end" so you're ALWAYS on your first run. But the game is kick ass awesome when you sit down in those Time Trials and start to beat your best time until you finally score those 3 star ratings. The announced DLC has no expansion of the pitiful story. It's abstract boxes in the sky for players to jump all over. More Time Trial wickedness.

I do not understand why they made up some BS story about a Big Brother society to try to legitimise running around on rooftops all day because the concept doesn't work, the story isn't explored, and running through a level once then moving on is the antithesis of what makes this game fun. It kinda burns me when people say it's too short, because now I'm playing Prince of Persia, which has eaten up 8 hours of my time and I'm 1/4 of the way through, yet it's repetitive to the max and every level is intensely linear. There are almost no alternate routes anywhere.

I feel DICE have shot themselves in the foot on ME, because they totally had it. You can see it when you play the game. They just royally screwed themselves and if ME gets dropped and nobody steps up to make another game like it, it's a huge waste.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

Man, poor guys. :( They really tried to branch out and be creative with their last few titles (Rather than just churning out thoughtless monkey-spinners) and it really seems to have bitten them in the ass financially.

Given, the games had problems, but I can only imagine this looking to EA execs/shareholders that creativity is a bad thing for business.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

Mirror's Edge was somewhat of an experiment, so I can see why the game tried to emphazise experience much more than longevity. The time trials, while not substantial, give you a bit of something to do. DICE has the controls down pat, now it's time to put that in something that can give you more to do. The game was born out of a Battlefield project- an online multiplayer parkour game would sound sweet.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

Well if they cut some of the executive packages maybe they would not have to cut so many job form developers - you know the guys they claim to love and to protect.

Damn straight man.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

For something as innovative as Mirror's Edge, but so short, I definitely think something like $30-40 might have been a better price tag.  For instance, Portal and Katamari Damacy are prime examples of great, original games, but they sold well because they had a lower initial price.

Also...  Don't release it in the teeth of the November release nightmare.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

very very true, these people can't fathom the idea of releasing a game at anything other than 60 dollars for the new consoles (not really next gen anymore since its current gen now :P ). Just like you said Mirrors Edge was a really good innovative game. I throughly enjoyed it and will keep the copy i purchased just because i enjoyed the experience so much kinda like assasin's creed. AC was longer and worth the cash but in the end i stillbeat it in a week and there isn't much replay value to it unless you just love assasinating people over and over.

I bet if they had given it a lower price like 40-45 bucks they would have raked in more cash just because people would be more open to spending that cash even if its a fairly short game by comparison.

I don't know about that.  The first thing I do when I hear about a game that's supposed to be fun but is really short?

Mirrors Edge not meeting sales targets? Funny that, I thought peole would be stampeding to pay $60 for a 5 hour long game.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

The time trials are the replay value, and they are really fun and challenging, and are the open areas everyone wanted to see in the game.  Also the speed runs on the regular game chapters are a lot of fun.  Rent it and see if you like it.  Anyone who complains about the gunplay in Mirror's Edge missed the whole point.  It's not a FPS shooter.  In fact they shouldn't have even given you the option to pick up a gun.  It is a platformer that you either love or hate, take it or leave it.  I gladly payed $60 for it even after I had rented it and beat it before I returned it.  And I will happily play the downloadable content coming in January.

As far as Rock Band 2, how many music games do they expect people to buy before they get sick of it?  I was sick of Guitar Hero long before Rock Band and World Tour came out.

And Need for Speed?  Again, how many mediocre campy street racing games do you expect people to buy?  They release NFS yearly (or more?) and each one is just as mediocre as the last.  Meanwhile, other franchises like Midnight Club and Burnout are making real progress with less frequent but more meaningful releases.

This. It's a game where the goal is to run away, not fight. Complaining about dodgy combat is like complaining that your cat isn't a dog.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

LOL!

I really wish companies would learn to appropriately price their games. They'd actually make more money.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

You are comparing an apple to oranges...  Now if you want to compare with Mass Effect, then I could see some logic in there.  I played it through once, and there is no way in hell I could justify going through that again, especially some of the MMO collection style side quests.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

I liked Heavenly Sword :)

I bought Mirror's Edge (and incidentally I stabbed myself with scissors opening it, had to get 3 staples, man that game is violent! :P). I beat it in about 3 days (about 2 hours a day), would have beat it faster but I wanted to go through without firing a shot and its hard when you have like 8 guys with machine guns. Honestly it needed more content or even some kind of online mode or co-op mode where you and someone else have to take 2 routes and make switch to each other and keep running from the cops or w/e, SOME kind of online play to add replay value. Ahh well, I still play it here and there just cause I like the whole free running thing :P

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

Mirror's Edge was a neat idea, but was too short, the gunplay was lazy, and there were too many segments keeping you boxed inside a vent (this really detracted from the big open area of the gameplay I think many people wanted to experience). The game also has little to no replay value.

Rock Band 2 would have sold better if it was released at a cheaper price tag and not as much emphasis was put on pushing out the equipment. The old rockband equipment works fine and most people aren't going to rebuy what is essentially the same stuff. The game is fun, but there wasn't really enough content added to really call it a sequel in my book (although the rock shop feature is friggin' amazing). If they would have released the stand-alone game for about $30-$40 I feel it would have sold much, much better.

Need for Speed: Undercover is awash in a sea of game just like it.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

I'm assuming they're referring to sales of the bundle.  Most people I know already had the RB1 bundle, so we all just bought the stand-alone game.  They're still making a killing on downloads.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

Well. The Rock Band 2 bundle is for people who don't already own the first one.

The peripherals are also much improved.  I'm tempted to get the Rock Band 2 drum set...  /sigh

Ya i was thinking the same thing, why buy the RB2 bundle when you already have RB1 controllers? :P  greedy bastages!

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

With Rockband, there shouldn't make any more games in that series, just lots of song packs to download.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

If they kill rock band I will be done with EA forever.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

They will fail to see the real problem and cut projects instead of the problem areas.  Like the people that decided that SecuROM was a great idea.  Maybe part of their franchise cuts will include Madden and other sports, haha.  The people who developed Mirrors Edge can go too.  Great concept, poorly executed.

Brilliant. Sack the people at the company who try to bring innovation back to EA.

Re: The Chop: Jobs, Franchises Could Disappear at EA, Says

Rock Band 2's not making the quota? The fact that the Wii version hasn't been released yet wouldn't have anything to do with that, now would it?
