The Chop: Sony Cuts 8,000, But Not from PlayStation Biz

December 9, 2008

Although its video game business has apparently not been affected - yet - Sony announced today that it will cut 8,000 jobs from the electronics side of the house.

Bloomberg reports that Sony will also close some manufacturing facilities and delay planned investments in others.

A Sony statement said:

These initiatives are in response to the sudden and rapid changes in the global economic environment.

Re: The Chop: Sony Cuts 8,000, But Not from PlayStation Biz

The CEO of Sony has said before that the Playstation was pretty much the only thing keeping the company up and running in the past. It still is making a lot of returns for them. The PS3 may not be doing as well as they had hoped, but the PSP has some pretty impressive numbers behind it and the PS2 has been churning a good profit for almost 9 years. I recall them saying the PSP is getting a lot more focus in 2009 and that 2008 many developers didn't consider the platform, however, since there are close to 40 million PSPs in consumer hands now a resurgence of titles are supposed to be appearing in 2009.

There other electronics have been taking a hammering like made though.

Sudden? Rapid? Perhaps compared to some economic changes, but we have been seeing this for over a year. It's like watching 365 car pile up... in slow motion.

It's a shame about those people being let off. I'm sure that a number of them were technically competent... and will likely now be applying for the same jobs that I will be shortly. I hate competition...

As long as they don't crap out on quality.  That is why people know them, and if they drop that they might as well drop the whole deal.

Re: Sony Cuts 8,000, But Not from PlayStation Biz

I remember reading a while ago that most of Sony's business was invested into video games (and by "most," I mean "majority" or "plurality," but, then again, I could be wrong). People are going to buy TV's and other electronics, though. It's the game concumers they need to keep the attention of.

Re: Sony Cuts 8,000, But Not from PlayStation Biz

But it makes no sense! The electronics side is what's making them any money. They're losing all their profits on PS3 production.

I sure didn't see this coming. Sony's got so much other revenue outside the gaming market, including Blu-Ray success in the format wars. So I figured once Sony realizes that gaming holds no more profitable potential, they'd shut down SCE, sell their studios, and they would be gone. Why fight the losing battle?

Re: Sony Cuts 8,000, But Not from PlayStation Biz

You forget that they are still making bank off the sales of PS2 systems, PS2 games, PSP systems, PSP games (though very little bank there right now).

The PS3 system sales hurt their pocket, but don't think it really matters too much when they are making that cash back with software sales and downloadable movies and content from the PSN.
