Electronic Arts needs to be more truthful in its advertising, according to a British goverment agency.
As reported by gamesindustry.biz, the UK's Advertising Standards Authority rapped EA's knuckles for including Xbox 360 footage in a commercial for the Wii version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09
From the gi.biz story:
The ads featured the sportsman swinging a Wii remote, but showed Xbox 360 gameplay footage at the same time, giving the wrong impression of the visual quality of the Nintendo version of the game. The publisher explained to the ASA that footage of the Wii game "would not be of broadcast quality" and had included text in the ad that the game was available on multiple formats in an effort to avoid confusion.
The ASA wasn't buying EA's explanation, however:
"Although we acknowledged that the message 'available on all formats' appeared in the final scene, we considered that viewers would infer from the ad that Tiger Woods was playing the game on a Wii console and the graphics shown behind him were representative of the actual game he was playing," said the watchdog.
"Because viewers would not be able to achieve the graphical quality shown in the ad on a Wii console, we concluded that the ad was misleading."
Bottom line? EA can't show the commercial for the August release again - not that they were planning to.

Why not fine EA? The only thing EA has to pay is probably one fewer purchase from each person that read this story... that are likely already wise to their bullshit. So... no concequences.

This isin't anything new. Activision also got the paddle with Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. Showing COD 2 gameplay and saying to buy COD 2: Big Red One.

Wow, EA's marketing folks dropped the ball here. A typical Wii owner isn't that perturbed by graphics, and those that are, likly own another system. You can't hurt sales on the Wii by showing real footage, especially when the controls are the typical sell/no sell on the Wii. Plus I don't buy the, "Not of broadcast quality," bit, the Wii is 480p capable, and most standard brodcasts are less than that. "Not of broadcast quality," is just PR-speak for, "We wanted to show the absolute best possible quality, and didn't think people were smart enough to notice."
Instead of "Available in all formats," why not also include a message saying, "Xbox360 footage shown." That way consumers know that PS3's footage would be similar and the Wii would be less.

Believe it or not, the Wii is not a weak machine. Granted it's not as graphically strong as xbox360 or ps3, but Jesus the graphics aren't terrible by any means!

Seems to be the console of choice this time around for cheapely knocked out tat, like PS2 was last generation. It's a shame because there are some fantastic looking games, both Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess look great, and No More Heroes and the upcoming Madworld havn't exactly been beaten by the ugly stick.

It's because dark, gritty graphics have become a crutch for developers. It's much easier to make a good-looking game that it is to make a game that's good.

Would be wrong in saying time/cost spent on porting?
They are highly focused on the basic port spread PC/360 and PS3, they in turn also focus to much on graphics and base to much forward thinking on it, if you ported to the WII and sold a copy to 20% of tis user base that would be almost be a million copies... surely that would then let you port it properly to the more "pretty" consoles...

So far my experience with ported games is that the Wii version is the one they get the interns or guys they hate to make, wheras games made directly for it by developers who want to make a decent game instead of spin a quick buck, turn out great.

And sell like crap like Boomblox, Zack and Wiki, and Deblob. The fact of the matter is, is only shovelware and nintendo stuff sells on that system. Your game is probebly going to be most affected by your title name and box art than the actual quality itself.

Hey, BoomBlox and Zack and Wiki are awesome games (haven't played De Blob yet). Just because you don't get to shoot people doesn't mean they suck. All three of those games are definitely NOT shovelware.

Did you read what I said or skipped every other word? I said good (edited:) original games from 3rd parties SELL like garbage on the wii, while stuff like Game Party, Ski and Shoot, and freking Carnival Games sell thousands upon millions while are total garbage.
Edit: And I do consider PS2 ports to be shovelware, just not necessarly bad shovelware.

My bad, I missed the "sell like crap". Though in all fairness, I never saw a commercial for Z&W or DeBlob and the only commercials for BoomBlox were on Nickelodeon and targeted at 10 year-olds. Same with Okami and No More Heroes. There is absolutely no marketing for most third party games that don't involve Babiez. That's their fault, not Nintendo's.
