PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

January 6, 2009 -

Animal rights organization PETA has named Xbox 360 role-playing adventure Fable 2 its Most Animal-Friendly Video Game of 2008.

In announcing its 6th annual Proggy Awards, PETA recognized "companies, people, and products for innovative and animal-friendly achievements." Of Fable 2, the activist group gushed:

Fable 2 is a vegetarian's dream come true. Why? In this virtual fight between good and evil, characters powered by tofu are just as powerful as their meat-eating counterparts—and are more fit and attractive to boot.

Featuring a strong pro-vegetarian theme, eating a plant-based diet helps you rack up "purity" points, whereas eating meat makes your character fat and evil. A fun and innovative game, it's also an effective tool that teaches gamers the real-life benefits of a vegetarian diet.

UPDATE: Edge points out that players can kick chickens and shoot bunnies in the game, which is just the kind of behavior that one might think would anger a group like PETA.

Dan Shannon, a representative for the animal rights group, told Edge:

I'll be honest, it's not our favorite part of the game. But what we like about Fable II and why we gave it the award is because the game presents you with choices, and then you see the repercussions of what those choices are. This is what the awards are based on, and that’s what PETA’s philosophy is—for people to understand how their choices affect the real world.

It’s not like people eat meat to score evil points, but you are supporting an industry that is cruel to animals. People need to be aware that their choices affect the world. We like that message in Fable II.

[The Chicken-Kicking] is done in a light-hearted manner. I don’t think anyone’s going to go out and start kicking chickens in their yard because of this game. Just like real life, you can go kick chickens if you want to, but we don’t think most people get off on that.

GP: Could just be that PETA, which has clearly recognized that talking about games is a good way to create buzz, didn't do its homework on Fable 2?

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

Which is why all the people in PETA are weightlifters, and the rest of us are the scrawny ones.  Wait, what?  Athletes eat lots of protein found in meat, and love those amino acids?  Huh weird.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

Man, you are such an ass. Every time I read a post by you I think, what an asshole. Of course, you are 100% right in this post, but that changes nothing!

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

Meat makes you fat and evil huh?Too bad PETA morons didn't attend biology. Humans have enamel on their teeth. Some are very sharp and angular for the very purpose of to eat meat. We are omnivores, not herbivores or carnivores. To be healthy and fit, we must attain a wonderful balance.

The funny thing is that the "real-life benefits" of that diet will make me less likely to be a warlock or a daemon incarnate? Smooth PETA. You guys have Jack Thompson logic on your side!

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

Its peta they only see what they want to see. If they want to see workers at a food processing plant torturing animals they will get video of it even if they have to hire people to get jobs there and make the videos for them.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

They've actually done that? If that's true then that's despicable.

I call Bullshit. I eat a ton of meat everyday, yet I am not fat nor evil. Where the fuck are my horns? How many animals do I need to digest before I start growing horns and my eyes begin to glow red? Apparently they didn't look at the achievements, you get one for kicking the shit out of a chicken and one for killing a bunny.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

I don't prescribe to their specific flavour of stupid, but the concept of good and evil is utterly subjective.

Say you have a chick and a cow in a barn, with an apple tree outfront.

 1. You eat the chicken, making the eating of the chicken evil TO THE CHICKEN, but neutral to the cow (Cow sayz, "WTF do I care, its a chicken")

 2. You eat the cow, making the eat of the cow evil TO THE COW, but neutral to the chicken (same as above)

 3. You eat the apples growing on the tree outfront, which is GOOD to the cow and the chicken, because you're not eating them.

 Ad nausem.

I do however agree that PETA keyed on the whole "evil" aspect of eating meat, but only because they are simpletons.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

That is a stupid argument. You are saying good when you mean beneficial.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

So you're attempting to differentiate good from beneficial? I'm waiting for a breakdown, if you would.

Good/Evil are utterly at the discretion of the observer, nothing more. Their use is laughable at best in any situation.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

You want a breakdown on the difference then fine, i'll feed the troll for just one post

Say you're a vp of a homeowners association and you REALLY want to be president. You are disconected from the president of the association in every way except your duties. The president of the homeowners association is murdered. He has treated everyone with respect and was loved by his family.

It's beneficial to you because you become president of the homeowners assocation with no grieving on your part since you did not know the man outside of your duties.

It is NOT good because you understand the man had a family and they are grieving for the loss of their father/husband/son. Furthermore, the man did nothing to you except hold the position you wanted.

Thus, a counterexample of something that is beneficial yet not in the least bit good for anybody involved. Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes I repeated "homeowners association" numerous times to keep people from making a hideously stupid jump in logic.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

 Simple counterarguement:

The previous saidp president was weak, allowing himself to be killed and usurped by his subordinate. Therefore it was good he was replaced, and weak leaders only bring about failure.

 Q.E.D.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

Physical strength is not of relevance in something like the home owner's association, and even if it was, he was not replaced with his killer, he was replaced by the vice president.

Reality/////////////////////////////////////Fantasy. Seems like a pretty thick line to me...

Your rather simpleminded and very archaic caveman counterargument amuses me but only in passing. Congratulations, you've lost my interest.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

Defeat is bittersweat, but I would think that someone like you would be use to it by now.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

So then by what you mean to say, is that the subjective views of good/evil are inefficient as an example of why a soical stance should change, given solely that the views are based on random situations?

i.e., if the president wasn't weak but was instead poison and killed, would be considered bad, if he was truly weak and was murdered, could be considered good because he inhibited progress in a system that would have relied on his efficiency?

I can see where you're coming from, if that's the case. But if you had to make a basis on fact, well... 130,000 years of human subsistance on meat, and we're still here regardless of the "morality" of it, aren't we? I'm pretty sure it was nigh on impossible to practice veganism 40 years ago.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

What else would expect? Trolls aren't here to provide intellectual stimuli.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

I can kind of understand why they didin't talk about the dog, but at the same time, not talking about the dog seems a bit crazy. The dog is less of a pet and more of a friend, and I don't know where PETA stands on animals being "companions" compared to "pets".

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

By definition, a pet IS a companion. Pets are animals you keep for company, or entertainment without any business motives. Lab mice are not pets. Race dogs are not pets (if you consider only their use to make money). But, you cannot have an animal as a companion and not be a pet.

Re: PETA Names Fable 2 Most Animal-Friendly Game of 2008

If you're a PETA member, they're companions.

If you're not a PETA member, they're slaves and you're a worthless dirtbag slave owner.

It's still slavery in PETA's eyes.  Especially the part where you put a collar on him and make him point the way to treasure.

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
