The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

January 8, 2009

...is actually from June 23rd, 2007.

Or, about six months before she so smugly slandered Mass Effect and then felt the combined wrath of millions of gamers.

How do we know?

Well, the GameTrailers page where the video is hosted says that it is from 2007. But we went a little further and checked the baseball scores which were scrolling onscreen against the 2007 MLB schedule and found the exact date.

That being the case, coverage on some sites to the effect of "didn't she learn her lesson?" would seem inoperable in this case.

It's the internet. As we've seen, you can never let the facts get in the way of your rantings/spinning a story to fit your agenda.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

The internet has no monopoly on spindoctoring or political agendas, if anything it is slow on the uptake for these concepts. Its harder and harder to lie to people who have access to all the information, whether or not you provide it to them personally or not.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

*nods* I think mostly the internet just makes it easier for amatures to do it,.. and easier to catch them at it.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

What an Idiot, first off, the Wii is not a game, and oh ya...SHE HAS NO DAMN IDEA ABOUT ANYTHIG SHE SAYS.  Seriously, did she name one source where she got her stupid aguement?  she does not have a degree is psycology so who is she to make this arguement? Plus the stupidity about the lady who said "babysitter in a box"  about video games.  People like her are the real problems

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Seriously! 'baby sitter in a box'? It's people like this that put video games in danger of legislation, rather than educating stupid parents on why a 6 year old shouldn't have GTA and other M games. xD

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I'm getting the feeling she's just the sort of person who likes to think what other people tell her to think. For all her qualifications, that's twice she's been led by the nose and simply stated what she thought her interviewer/audience wanted to hear, rather than actually tried to think about the situation from outside the hype.

Kinda depressing I suppose, but also an interesting example of how, as far as forcing people to think along certain paths, as far as inhibting originality or reducing the ability to make decisions based on facts rather than peer pressure is concerned, Video Games are absolutely nothing next to the average TV.

People say the interactive part of computer games is bad, but at least gamers are encouraged to investigate and experiment to solve their own problems, rather than rely on other people to do their thinking for them.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Yeah, I didn't catch that that idiot was naming things that signs that it is an affect and not a cause, as signs they are addicted to video games, instead of the fact that they have other problems.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I love my hobby as much as the next guy, and I jump to defend it when needed, but Cooper didn't say anything unreasonable in this video.  If you're kid is playing 15 hours a day, that's a problem.  I had periods in my life where I played 15 hours a day, and my life suffered because of it.  Granted I had hella good time, but my grades showed.  And my wife will be the first to tell you my social skills suffered as well, lol.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I'll agree that playing games 15 hours a day is a problem, but glamourizing it up to make it look like any child that picks up a computer game will end up like a crack-addict is another matter.

Spending too much time doing anything is bad for you, I'm sure Fox would have quite different views to the fact that there are people who would feel utterly lost without their television.

The problem is not what they are doing for 15 hours a day, that is irrelevant, the problem is that they don't have the self control to tell themselves to stop, or an authority figure teaching them the importance of moderation, regardless of what it is they are moderating.

You seem to forget, that not demonizing something doesn't lead to good ratings... that seems to be all that news casters are concerned with

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Its hard to take them seriously when their clips are all from last-gen games.  Seriously, who's played Super Mario 64 lately on a Nintendo 64?  Shit, mines still hooked up to a TV and I still don't even play it.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

That babysitter in a box comment pissed me off.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I agree with you one hundred percent.

Anyone who calls game consoles a "babysitter in a box" should have their children taken away immediately.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I hate how anyone who graduates university or even high school is a "scientist" or "expert" nowadays. She's a fucking radio thug who does no research at all, what the hell?

I'm in med school and even after I graduate, it doesn't make me a fucking scientist.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Don't know if this applies anywhere else, but in the states nowadays, everyone is special, everyone is smart, everyone can do anything, and it all leads to everyone polishing their titles. Disgusting and detrimental.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

It also doesn't help that a BA/BS is the 'new HS diploma'.  Without one you can't do much, so everyone has to get one, which drops the average quite a bit.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I think Fox news should stop using Last Gen footage and be more in-tune with this gen

And about Cooper Lawerence, she Has said that she was sorry once and said her peace(Trust me Fox news also misspoke about Mass effect and apoligized aswell even though Fox news has and awalys will be a hypocrite for showing Stupid stuff (Including stuff that i can't mention on this Blog))

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I think Fox news should stop using Last Gen footage and be more in-tune with this gen

Just goes to show how much they care about accuracy, eh?

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Lol, game addiction wasn't even a big deal 2 gens ago. xD (mario 64 is 2 gens ago, I'm pretty sure...) So maybe they should get more current footage.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I think they used older generation games for legal reasons

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

I can understand the confusion since every anti-videogame speech by these "experts" are completely interchangable. They're all the same outrageous accusations backed up the the same flimsy studies.

And I'm willing to bet that she really hasn't learned her lesson. After all she got her 5 min of fame.

It's like viewing random Jack Thompson postings. You can put them in any order you want.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

One of her signs of addiction is horrifying. She says if chidren talk about games when their not playing, then they are addicted.

I guess she sees games as nothing worth talking about after playing.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

If they can make this stuff stick to games, its only a matter of time before they turn on sex to.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Guess that makes me a bigger addict than my aunt, who is an alcoholic, as I'm always talking about video games, and she almost never talks about drinking.

Such dangerous stupidity.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

*facepalm*

See, this is why so many people are stupid and/or misinformed. People I see on the news these days, all they do is make the people watching dumber for having done so.

Great, we have a Shadow wannabe. I'd yell obscenities at you, but I have nothing but pity for anyone trying to be like Shadow.

Shadow wannabe? No, I don't think so. I've posted a *facepalm* a grand total of two times since I started visiting this site (about 3 years ago), and I don't plan on doing it again unless I feel it completely appropriate.

You can't really victimize someone over the internet. Unless you steal their identity or something. Other than that, just ignore people you don't like.

If anything makes you emo, it's this kind of stuff.  Your facepalming was merely tiresome.  Although you've laid off some lately; now I see "WIN" and "FAIL" constantly instead.  Good to see you diversifying.

Oh, no, the only reason I'm considering contacting Dennis is because this Troll needs dealing with. And the WIN and FAIL thing... That FAIL pic I posted when deoVIRUS incited Godwin's Law was the first in a while.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

"but playing games for 12-15 hours a day can be a problem!"

Lol, 12-15 hours? Does this dingbat have any idea what she is talking about? I mean, she assumes all of us gamers are addicts, when its really just a few that can be called that. xD

I see this assumption with my parents too...they think all I do is play video games all day, when I really only have time for maybe, 2 hours a day, and even that is spread out!

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

With people like her telling parents that videogames are dangerous because of them being addictive like drugs and alcohol, and generalizing that all gamers are addicted?

No wonder why many of us have trouble trying to talk to people in real life, it is because people like this are slandering videogames for so long it has become public perception.

If they wonder why videogamers like us perfer to play videogames instead of social communication outside the house, they first have to look at the real problems that they are causing in the first place by labeling us gamers in a negative image....

I have already talked to a fair few people in my life about videogames, and there are some, but not all, who already have their opinions formed from what they hear from the news and sadly never had the time or even the care to do their own research to see if they might be wrong about their opinions.

And they think that we are the problem.

"Babysitter in a box" only applies if that is how you choose to use a gaming console. And who's fault would that be, hrrm? If you chose to disregard all responsibility and left your child in the care of an Xbox?

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

She was dumb during the Mass Effect fiasco and she's dumber now.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

This took place before the Mass Effect incident.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

When FOX comes calling, the only question is whether the guest(s) will be dumber than the hosts.  That guy's commentary was as bad as his hairpiece.  How do you come to the blanket conclusion that today's youth are no good at conversation?  Even worse, assuming that we're all socially isolated in our basements?  I guess he hadn't heard how the internet has this cool little feature where you can communicate with other human beings.

Sad.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Overall, not really anything to get too pissed about. At least she isn't blatently lying. And she doesn't totally dismiss gaming as something entirely negative.

That's what I would say if she haden't thrown away all credability with the Mass Effect fiasco.

If only we'd known about this one sooner, then we could've bombed her amazon book rating.

As for the 'stooping to her level' stuff, remember how far Geoff got taking the high road? Didn't work so well, did it?

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

As for the 'stooping to her level' stuff, remember how far Geoff got taking the high road? Didn't work so well, did it?

I disagree : it's not the same thing. Geoff was on Fox News and had to "play" by Fox News' rules. He had no choice, except between the bad and the worst. The bad : expressing calmly and politely his disagreement while knowing that it wouldn't change nothing because it's Fox News. That's what he did. The worst : shouting, insulting his contradictors, and expressing his disagreement with foul language. Fortunately, he didn't sink that low.

However, WE have the choice. We can say what we want on forums and blogs, with a bigger chance to be heard by others. We can write Cooper directly to ask for clarification and/or express our disagreement in a polite way (note that we can be angry AND polite at the same time). Or flame her on forums, trash her books on Amazon and put her on a black list ad vitam aeternam, no matter if she only said one or two things on video games in her whole life. I agree that the second option wouldn't be "stooping at her level". It would just be sinking into the gutter.

Completely agree here.  Geoff was polite and thoughtful in his response.  Cooper, however, was not and dismissed him publicly with a condescending "sweetheart".

However, WE have the choice. We can say what we want on forums and blogs, with a bigger chance to be heard by others. Sure, and we do all of that.  The problem is, we don't reach the mass market in the same way a Cooper Lawrence does.  She taps into the fear of the unknown in a lot of parents and tells them what they should be afraid of.  And people that listen to that drivel respond take the information without question.  Afterall, she is an "expert", correct?  How could she possibly be on TV if she was lying?.  No, we in the game enthusiast community do not have the same opportunity to have our voices heard by the larger populous to correct the disinformation.  She got what she deserved.

As I said in another post, sometimes, not always of course, the best way to deal with a bully is to demonstrate that you are not afraid to stoop to their level to stop them.  In the case of her bookstorming, while I did not participate, it ended with the proper result.  Cooper admitted that she was wrong, that Fox misled her and that she was sorry.  Maybe she will think twice before spouting such garbage in the future.  I have the feeling that a letter writing campaign would not have yielded the same apology from Cooper.

People like Cooper have too high an opinion of themselves to apologize voluntarily.  Proof?  While she dismisses games as disrespectful towards women and objectifies them, she tramps it up on the cover of one of her "girl power" books.  Or, how about this press photo? http://www.cooperlawrence.com/photos/ChadCooperAnthony.jpg  Hopefully she learned the lesson of accountability.

Re: The Cooper Lawrence Video That is Circulating Today...

Nah, she didn't she's still out there blabbing like an idiot on various cable news channels.
