UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

January 8, 2009

MTV Multiplayer has posted an interview with J Moses, CEO of UGO, which just acquired 1UP from Ziff-Davis.

A number of 1UP staffers were immediately let go and ZD also announced that it was shutting down its long-running print mag, Electronic Gaming Monthly. Of the deal, Moses told MTV's Stephen Totilo:

We have just hired 24 [1UP] people. At a time where all you read about is layoffs we have expanded UGO by 33 percent. I don’t know of any content companies out there expanding their workforce. We did that because our business is robust and growing...

We kept, we believe, the core editorial group that can continue to do great things. What we’re adding is 1up.com as an editorial site that will sit on top of the UGO publishing site. And we kept who we believe are the critical people who can make up a great site.

Closing EGM [was a Ziff-Davis decision and] has absolutely nothing to do with UGO.

GP: Given the level of emotion surrounding the sudden closure of EGM and the loss of numerous EGM and 1UP staffers, it's not surprising that many of the reader comments to the Moses interview are negative.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

They say that they kept the core editorial staff, but a lot of the people they cut were the more experienced and/or popular writers/editors. A comment I read on Kotaku's article about it put it pretty well; they fired the real staff and kept the interns.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

Agreed, they didn't want to deal with the core/experienced staff and rather save expenses by keeping the young girl around to bring them coffee and have her bend over to pick up files and such...

I think the meaning of "core staff" differs greatly with the public view to his.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

Interns can be taught to give the higher ups the quality/content they want. Older, veteran staff members will have habits that need to be broken and experience that may not be of any use to them.

Wow, someone sucks no matter how you look at it.  That is pretty lame to do...  I hope they get a decent severance package.

What?  You didn't hire 24 people you assbag.  These people were already employed.  All you did was transfer employment while giving the finger to over 40 other talented people.  Grats on getting some paperwork done, you prick.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

I would play devils advocate, but this whole thing has affected me and a few other people personally, that I cannot go behind a site such a UGO. They took out the important things of that site, important editors, podcasts, TV shows. 1UP was connected to it's community that's why theres a podcast called 1up yours. Some people don't realize that the editors are just as or more important than the brand site. It's not the site name that brings you viewers, it's the editors that run it.

Exactly, just like what happened with GameSpot.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

I never saw a negative side. Maybe because I've always thought 1up.com is a crappy, mess of a website in due of a kick in the ass and some editorial standards.

One company bought another. Company A is keeping company B in business which, prior to the deal was not something guaranteed. Fans of the site should be sighing relief, not crying murder.

I guess its just militant fans of the podcast.

Thanks for putting the name of a site I [used to] read on your own content, and firing most of the staff UGO!

I don't think this is necessarily the case. The community will adopt new editors. Losing the community would kill the site.

Keith K said, "One company bought another. Company A is keeping company B in business which, prior to the deal was not something guaranteed. Fans of the site should be sighing relief, not crying murder."

Ah, but you forget that this is the internet combined with gamers. If something changes, it must automatically be bad, and it is the responsibility of each individual to fly off the handle.

Although I do agree with part of what Keddren said. Moses' comment that "We have just hired 24 people..." should go to the Corporate Spin Hall of Fame. Before the acquisition, there were 50-ish people employed, now there are 24 people employed, but he manages to turn that into a statement of job creation. On the other hand, with the financial situation Ziff-Davis is in, 24 people still having a job is better than 0.

As for the statement that, "it's not surprising that many of the reader comments to the Moses interview are negative", I didn't find the comments to be overly negative. Of the seven comments, I'd say three are negative and the rest are what I'd probably class as neutral (i.e. of the nature of, let's wait and see what happens).

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

I'm not too happy about the 1up acquisition, either, but at least I'm maintaining some optimism; there are only two directions UGO can take 1up, and both will leave them at the mercy of gamers around the world.

And we've already seen what happens when you piss off gamers.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

Hi All,

UGO isn't the chief culprit in this transaction, yes it may have influenced the deal. But the real baddie being ignored is "HEARST" they're the magazine publisher with the dollars that afforded all of this to go down. Perhaps an interview with the CEO of Hearst is more apropo than that of UGO.

Although J. Moses CEO of UGO is correct in stating they aren't at fault for EGM magazine getting shafted. That blame falls squarely on "Ziff Davis" and they're need of meeting debt obligations.

In the "Big Picture" EGM magazine is another casualty of Print Media transitioning to Online Media. It's happening to the Newspaper and Magazine industry as a WHOLE. From the ashes of one culture another shall take its place that being the digital online media.

I'm i sadden that we've lost great gamer magazines like: Computer Games World, Computer Gaming World, and now EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly). Of course!

But it's more than a bad economy or shody management at "Ziff Davis". It's the current trend, unfortubnately.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

We have just hired 24 [1UP] people. At a time where all you read about is layoffs we have expanded UGO by 33 percent. I don’t know of any content companies out there expanding their workforce. We did that because our business is robust and growing..

This is misleading to the point of dishonesty.

If 1Up had declared bankruptcy and UGO picked up 24 jobless staffers, they could say this. This is not what happened. UGO bought 1Up. At that point, UGO and 1Up are a single combined entity with a headcount equal to the total of both organizations' previous headcount.

UGO only retained 24 of those. They are not new hires. They are retentions, regardless of how UGO accounts for them internally. There is a net loss of jobs here, not a net gain.

Re: UGO Boss Talks About 1UP Deal, EGM

I never really went to the 1UP site so that doesn't neccesarily affect me, but I have been reading EGM for awhile. It sucks that EGM won't be printed anymore, but it doesn't surprise me because I have been less than impressed with the magazine lately. The magazine got substantially smaller from when I read it a couple of years back, and the reviews I found dissapointing. They weren't very detailed or helpful.
