Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

January 10, 2009 -

GamePolitics received a press release from disbarred Miami attorney Jack Thompson this morning in which he claimed to be "working with" state officials in Utah to pass video game legislation.

Regarding the supposed legislation, Thompson writes:

Thompson will be in Utah this coming week to work with Utah state officials to pass a new state law that will stop, dead in its tracks, the continuing marketing and sale of “Mature” video games to kids. Utah’s new approach to this problem will be constitutional and it will become a model for other states to follow.

A bit of digging shows that Thompson is scheduled to be in Utah next Saturday, where he will be the keynote speaker at the annual convention of the ultra-conservative Utah Eagle Forum. Indeed, the group appears to be a significant part of Thompson's ongoing connection to Utah. A convention agenda mentions that Thompson:

...will be talking about the research proving exposure to graphic violence leads to violent children and this year's legislation to prevent it.

We also note that, despite his disbarment, Thompson remains listed as an attorney in the program.

Via e-mail, we asked Thompson if he was talking to any specific legislators about a game bill and whether he could elaborate on what he meant by "working with." So far, we have received no response.

Still, given the local clout wielded in Utah by the UEF and its president, Gayle Ruzicka, we wouldn't doubt that some type of Thompson-authored legislation will surface there. Indeed, four state legislators are also scheduled to serve as speakers at the UEF convention.

To be sure, Thompson has quite a history with Utah:

In 2006, then-State Rep. David Hogue (R) tried - and failed - to pass a bill equating violent video games with pornography. Language used by Hogue during legislative hearings mimicked Thompson's frequent comments on game violence. Gayle Ruzicka spoke out in favor of the bill.

In 2007, Rep. Scott Wyatt's Thompson-authored bill failed as well, but not before Thompson called for the impeachment of Utah's popular Republican Attorney General Mark Shurtleff. Shurtleff's offense? He had the temerity to offer a legal opinion that Thompson's bill was unconstitutional.

In 2008, only weeks after a referee recommended to the Florida Supreme Court that Thompson be disbarred for life, the controversial anti-game violence campaigner was honored with a Freedom Award at the annual America's Freedom Festival in Provo. Given the circumstances, we found his selection a curious choice.

Jack Thompson to be speaking at a conservative, possible hate group? Why is he even bragging about it?

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

i still wanna see this advertising towards children and all.

i just don't see it anywhere.

no more than any movie anyways. i've yet to see an M rated game advertised in a manner that could coincide with his claims.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

I've repeatedly asked Thompson to cite an example of an M rated game being marketed to kids.  The best he's ever been able to come up with was a GTA ad that aired on ESPN Sports Center at two in the afternoon.

Needless to say, the target audience of Sports Center is not children.

Jack has also claimed that advertising during WWE programming counts as his proof.  This was before the WWE became TV-13 BTW.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

I'm surprised he didn't tell you to look it up or watch Cartoon Network.

And as yo usaid, Sports center is geared toward people the games are made for anyway.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

This didn't work before. What in the hell makes Thompson think it will work this time?

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Dennis, with all due respect, you have fallen right into Jack Thompson's little game.  You gave him publicity for a non-issue.

- There is 100% precedent that anti-games laws get struck down.

- There is 100% precedent that Jack Thompson fails at everything he ever does.

The only interesting point is that Jack is still pretending to be a lawyer- he will be in jail before 2011 (trust me).

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Zerodash, with all due respect back atcha, covering any legislative issue relating to games is job one at GamePolitics.

My concern is not whether Thompson does or does not enjoy the coverage. My concern is bringing the news related to this topic to the people.

In fact, knowing the clout that Gayle Ruzicka has among conservative Utah legislators, I'd say the odds of this bill getting proposed are about 99%. So, why would I not write about it?

I totally called Utah being the state he was claiming to "work with".

In the end, it won't matter as anything the worthless turd comes up is still unconstitutional.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Jack Thompson claims something, nobody believes him because he has no credibility. I guess he has to go to one of those hick states that still think he's an attorney in order to be noticed.

When Jack Thompson runs his mouth, does anyone really care what he has to say anymore?

I'm not surprised that the Eagle Forum would continue to list jT as a lawyer.  They're probably the only ally he has left right now.  Let's not forget they're run by Phyllis Schlafly, the most hateful woman on Earth.  Ideaology-wise, they're very compatible.

I wonder what Jason Chaffetz, Representative of the 3rd Congressional District of Utah, where the Freedom Festival happens to be held, thinks of Thompson?  I'm sure he must have at least heard of him.  Maybe he can beat him in a leg-wrestling match?  He may have lost to Stephen Colbert, but I have a feeling he can easily beat Thompson.

Isn't Chaffetz the guy who refused to rent digs in D.C., opting, instead, to sleep on a fold-away cot in his Capitol Hill office? And take showers in the basement?

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

"Chaffetz announced at the start of the Congressional term in 2009 that he would be sleeping on a cot in his office rather than renting a Washington, DC apartment. Chaffetz said, "I'm trying to live the example that it doesn't take big dollars in order to get where we want to go. I can save my family $1,500 a month by sleeping on a cot in my office as opposed to getting a fancy place that's maybe a little bit more comfortable." His family will continue to live in Alpine. "We are now $10 trillion in debt. $10 trillion. Those are expenses that have to be paid at some point," he said. If he can tighten his belt in these tough economic times, Chaffetz said, Congress should be able to as well. "

From the Utah Eagles Forum About Us:  http://www.utaheagleforum.org/about.php

EAGLE FORUM was founded in 1972 by Phyllis Schlafly as a national pro-family organization. The Eagles have achieved unmatched success in:

Defeating radical programs for federal child care

UTAH EAGLE FORUM has achieved an equally distinguished record within the State of Utah and has become a recognized leader for conservative principles while accomplishing the following:

Thwarting the passage of "Hate Crimes" legislation

Bringing the anti-family "Values" and sex education programs in public schools to halt.

(Which contridcts the next two.)

Protecting Parental Rights.

Preserving choice in education for parents, including home school.

Championing the preservation of religious liberty

(Which is, in fact, a lie because it's only THEIR religious liberty that they want others to have the Right to believe in.)

Their ignorant views on education:

Marriage:

Naturally, we expect the Traitor John Bruce to associate with a known hate groups.  Hopefully, citizens of Utah will take notice of their poiticians' part in a hate group as well.  Their association with an individual who advocates lies, deceit, bigotry, and hate as "moral" acts should make them very questionable in their capabilities to honorably and ethically perform their duties.

It would be no different if they were in an organization with the likes of David Duke, Fred Phelps, or even Eric Rudolph.  During election time, we questioned even minor associations and acts of politicians.  That should not end simply because the elections are over.

Just as the politicians in NC should be questioned about their association with an organization the supports abuse against children and stands against legislation that would make abuse in school legislated wrongdoing, so should politicians receive negative attention for being associated with a known hate group such as the Eagles Forum and a know bigot, liar, and deceiver such as the Traitor John Bruce "Jack" Thompson.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

I wouldn't call them hate groups but I would call them morons. They think atheism has gained control of the courts, and Hollywood and all that other 'vast liberal conspiracy' bullshit. (Speaking of which they also think the fact that most scientists support evolution is a big conspiracy as well, which ranks them close to the 9/11 'truthers' in terms of moronic conspiracy claims).

And of course there's the usual crap that any judge that disagrees with them is an 'activist judge'. Living in California, I heard this crap first hand when conservative stooges kept claiming the judge who overturned gay marraige bans was an activist judge, despite being Republican, as well as several other demonstrably false statements that directly contradicted CA law.  But I'm getting off on a tanget.

And of course there's the usual demonizing of the other side (which unfortunately you can find on every side), pretending that liberalism is nothing but feminism, PC crap, atheism, and anti-family ... whatever.

Oh and I found this

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

not sure about THIS case, but i have heard some call Jack a "traitor" in regards to being a christian... he calls himself one, but his actions and beliefs say otherwise

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

The UEF program contains more wrongful "facts" than just Thompson being listed as an attorney.

It says Thompson has become the nation's foremost authority on the effet of violent vidoe games when we all know that the word authority should really be joke. Thompson never had even a single success related to video games and has often if not always been proven wrong.

It also says he will be talking about the research proving exposure to graphic violence leads to violent children. If such irrefutable research did indeed exist Thompson might have had success in his carreer, even with his unethical behavior, but such research does not exist. Even the most anti-violent enterntaiment research speaks of agression, not of violence.

All in all, I find Utah a very strange state due in part to the UEF. I would nearly throw the word delusional out there. It's one thing fighting against violent entertainment but to purposefully ignore simple facts is being delusional.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Yay, we all know how well these laws have done in other states. What is it now, 9 bills found unconstitutional out of 9 bills passed. Judical Precedent is clearly on our side in this. Unless a constitutional amendment is passed saying minors have no Free Speech rights or video games aren't Free Speech, these laws are doomed to fail.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

This will probably work just as well as his previous 100% constitutional law which was found to be totally unconstitutional.  I think that the last time he was trolling here he said something about making a law based on commerce or something.  It doesn't matter because it is still limiting free speech and will therefore be struck down just like every other videogame violence law has been.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Sometimes I think Utah should just be allowed to leave the Union.  I think the US is a little too attached to the idea of 'keep as many states as we can' and some should just be alloed to break off into thier own little countries.

If nothing else, it would be funny to see what Texas would do as it's own country.  Probably invade Cuba or something ^_^

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Actually any state could technically break off and form it's own nation (or multiple states together could break off) if the will of the people demand it, there are many secessionist groups throughout the country (infact Sarah Palin is loosly affiliated with an Alaskan secessionist group)

Mind you however, that any state that did break off would likely be forced back in under the might of the American army, much like what happened in the civil war (the south rebeled and seceded from the nation, the northern forces forced them come back after breaking them in a bloody war)

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Not to mention that most states simply do not have an ecomony that would be self-sufficent. Or, lets say Arkansas succeded, you have one country literaly surrounded by a potentialy hostile neighbor, their only way to the coast for shipping running through same territory, no major air service hub. etc..etc..

Hunting the shadows of the troubled dreams.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

That would be hilarious. The Midwest and the South would split off and form a conservative country while the Northeast and the West Coast would form a liberal country. The problem is that the conservatives would take most of the farmland (aside from California, that is) and would effectively split the liberal nation in half. The conservative nation would also probably have more guns that they're not afraid to use and fewer big cities to make targets out of, giving them an edge in any sort of civil war.

Also, I think your assumptions about Texas are incorrect. They wouldn't invade Cuba; they'd probably invade New Mexico and force it to join the conservative country. Or they might invade old Mexico; it wouldn't be the first time.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Do libertarians get to have a country? :(

Led by John Stossel, of course.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Libertarians get New England.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

Sweet deal, if you ask me. New England is the heart and start of America's freedom.

Don't Tread On Me!!!

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

I thought Libertarians only got South Dakota.

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

True that they would get all that farmland, but at the rate of how we much we are farming it and how much water we are drilling out of the aquifer beneath it, we could see another dust bowl again and that land become fairly useless.  There just isnt enough rain fall in that part of the country, which means we have to rely on drilling the water out and there is only so much water in that aquifer.  When that empties out, it will likely be a huge disaster as so much of our(and world to an extent) food comes from that region.  So in the end, if the midwest really did break off, unless they restrict their farming, it wont be of much use to a "conservative nation".

Isn't Mexico already invading Texas?

Re: Jack Thompson Working on New Game Legislation in Utah?

You have something of a point there. The Midwest would have to switch over to a realistic and sustainable agricultural model instead of the ridiculous corn model they use now. But if the farmers wised up and started planting a variety of crops meant to grow in their climates instead of trying to forcibly grow corn, soybeans, or wheat by irrigating and throwing tons of fertilizer on, they wouldn't have much trouble. Also, right now it's a race to see if the aquafers run or before the salt build-up on irrigated lands makes them unfarmable. Still, Iowa should be sitting pretty. Most of the state gets more than enough rain to grow corn without irrigation.
