A new legislative proposal to restrict the sale of video games portraying negative racial stereotypes and bad language has been proposed in the New York Assembly.
The measure, A01474, was submitted by Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright, a Democrat from Manhattan. The bill, which has been referred to the Assembly's Consumer Protection and Affairs Committee:
Prohibits the sale to minors of certain rated video games containing a rating that reflects content of various degrees of profanity, racist stereotypes or derogatory language, and/or actions toward a specific group of persons.
A similar bill proposed by Wright in 2007 failed to pass.
GamePolitics readers will recall that New York passed a video game law in 2008 mandating - redundantly - that game packages display ratings and that consoles offer parental control features. The video game industry did not bring a legal challenge, however, since those remedies were already in place and the law did not threaten sales.

I found the comment funny myself. @ EZK: Laugh Appreciated. And from what I have learned from the MULTIPLE times I have been accused of being racist ONLY because I was WHITE (anyone see the irony in that?) is that it doesn't matter what you say or do, someone will find a way to blame you for something even if you had nothing to do with it.

Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
I was subbing in a class, where some of the students kept making comments suggesting I was gay (I refused to comment on this, telling that it wasn't an appropriate conversation, nor was it relevant. They probably think that I am in fact gay, but that doesn't bother me) and that I was a white supremecist (I refused to let that one pass). When one of the kids asked me if white kids gave me less problems, I was tempted to say "Yes, but only because they never accuse me of racism," but I decided to go for a more straight answer and just told him "No".
Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
I would have given the former response, but only because I was like that in school and thus got in a lot of fights.

Hockey is racist...they have all those white hockey players hitting a black puck...
Bowling is reverse racist all those multi-colored balls knocking down the white pins...
Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
Was that suppose to be funny? It came off as pretty sad.
Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
No. It was supposed to be sarcastic. Funny and sarcasm are not equivolent.

Whatever it was meant to be, it fell flat on its face.

I think it's pretty fucking funny myself.
But then again, Sub-Par Trolls have no sense of humor.

Huh, he hasn't accused you of being a simple-minded Bible thumper yet. Guess he needs another cup of coffee before jumping into religious trolling.
Hey, for what it's worth I chuckled.

No, peoples dislikes are a matter of personal taste. And until we live in a Demolition Man-esque world where there are morality statutes and machines that kiss your ass for money, thats how its going to stay.
Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
Well, you can't really rate racism. The perfect example is the RE5 controversy. Even though us gamers don't see why it's racist, it's obvious that some people do.
Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
The whole RE5 controversy, well i can understand that shooting a bunch of black people can be considered racism, but there is a ton of depth to that...if they call RE5 out, why wasn't RE4 called. That was the biggest reason i think most gamers had.
...but racism to me has become a sham, but that whole belief isn't meant for here.
Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
Racism is overrated.

and overused.
Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
Genius that he is, it's more than likely the parents are buying the game hence this law would do next to nothing.

I think it's just their latest attempt to get around the legal hurdles that have prevented them from getting these laws passed before.
"Damn, we've tried using violence and sex as reasons to ban the sale of games. What else do we got?"
"Well, we can try to use the race card."
"I like it! Throw something in there along the lines of "protecting the children" and we should be good to go."

Re: NY Bill Would Shield Minors from Racist Stereotypes and
Exactly... another politician just doing things to look better instead of figuring out real answers to real problems. Like spending the money they are wasting on this stuff to install thin-film solar panels and/or wind turbines on their buildings so they can make almost as much energy as the spend, and cost the people less money.
