Troubled electronics retailer Circuit City has gone belly-up, according to the Associated Press.
Although the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and closed 155 stores late last year, those measures were apparently a case of too little, too late. Having failed to find a buyer or a way to keep itself afloat, the troubled retailer's assets will now be liquidated.
Before it hit the skids Circuit City handled between 5-10% of all video game retail sales.

Pah! 10% discount so far. I went ahead and bought my digital voice recorder with USB cable at Walmar.
Who knows, by the time they hit 50%, I'll be at the next paycheck and they will have decent video cards left. :: Shrugs ::

Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
The CC by my house never had any customers. Their problem? Store flow. The aisles were at weird angles and confusing. It was a maze just to find the movie section.
As far as best buy, they have yet to do me wrong. Plus the store is easy to navigate.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Their lemon policy is pretty darn useful too.
A great example of corporate stupidity serving the customer. Let's see some more of that from the big game companies, eh?
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Bad for economy, worse for the laid off workers, and we lose a smidgen of competition. Now on top of that the executives will probably walk away with nice bonuses.

Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
finally Circuit City is dead, we all knew this was coming...
Now if only best buy would do the same and DIE... I hate best buy...
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Best Buy used to be awesome for one thing and one thing only, great prices. They were the only store I could go to that would beat everyone else in price for new movies and video games. Somewhere along the line they decided that offering the best possible price was a shitty way to go so they got a larger inventory of movies and just marked them all up so that Wal-mart and other stores (including circuit city for a lot of titles) were kicking their ass in terms of pricing.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Those Warrenties or Buyer Protection Plans are a joke.
First the sales associates who were actually supposed to be out on the floor helping guests are forced to sell them and they recieve nothing in return except the promise of more hours. One could sell $400 in these a day but most District,Regional,Corp workers will always say "That's not enough."
Secondly the reason stores offer these is to shore up the bottom line or attempting to make the company look like it's making more money.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
my wife works for circuit city... or should I say worked now.... this is going to make life hard for us big time, with me only working full time now.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Best of luck to you both. Bad time to lose a position. Hope all works out for ya'll.

Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
I'm no huge fan of any of the big box electronics retailers. Circuit City management obviously made a series of fatal errors, probably starting with thinking that their salespeople didn't need to know anything about the products and they could get by with glorified cashiers.
However, another 30,000+ people in the unemployment lines is NOT what this country needs right now. For the time being my job is pretty safe, but I'm not smug enough to say, "I'm glad a bunch of people are going to have to wonder how they'll support their families now."
I just wish we could come up with a way to get a pound of flesh from the idiots in their ivory tower who cause all these problems in the first place. They have to sell their summer home, and how will they ever afford that trip to Aruba this year. Boo-frickin'-hoo. How about the people who are really suffering.
If this keeps up this country will have a class war on its hands the likes of which you cannot imagine.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Yeah, it's kinda a double edged sword. On the one hand, not many people are going to particularly miss Circuit City. The company basically shot itself in the foot, then bled to death. On the other hand, not many people are going to like 30,000 people losing their jobs. The altruists will feel sorry for them, and the pragmatists will be uphappy at the prospect of 30,000 people in the unemployment lines, or job hunting.

Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Good riddance. They had some of the crappiest customer relations in the 20+ stores I'd visited in my life, and I'm to understand that their attitude was common for the chain.

Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
It'd definitely fall under that "3 million jobs saved and/or created" that Obama has been promising. Circuit City is worth 30,000+ jobs right there.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Circuit City doesn't have a union, so Obama doesn't care.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
It's also a crappy big box store with annoying business practices and no redeeming value, so Obama SHOULDN'T care.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Business is business no one forces anyone to shop anywhere.
I can understand someone nto liking a store for the experiences they've had. I'm no fan of CC, (and my wife is currently employed there until the liquidation ends...luckily I work at a news station and found someting for her...we hope anyway)
But 34,000 people out of work is nothing to turn your nose up at.
The more people out of work is more of your tax money going to to unemployment and not to police, fire dept, education, military and more to fixing the economy. So Obama SHOULD care.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
These guys were trashy anyway. I'm glad they're gone. I do miss compUSA, but the circuit city employee training taught the employees to literally lie to sell the extended warranties (and thus gain a commission).
I kid you not, they were told to lie through their teeth about products and built in warranties.
I'd also, more than once, walked in there and seen OEM hardware repackaged and being sold as retail.
Good riddance.

Well at least he's not as bad as that Daniel guy who gave the anti-censorship, free speech defenders a bad name (remember he was pretty much the polar opposite of JT except on the other side of the extreme) or that fanatical militant atheist guy forget his name who couldn't go one post without bitching about how much religion and belief in God sucks even if it had nothing to do with religion whatsoever. Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Ya know... is it really THAT big of a deal on a blog with so many people on it? I mean, sheesh, it's not like he's spamming the threads with 10 oversized pictures at a time...
Plus, for the matter at hand, what else do you expect him to do, make some long rant about how much it sucks? We all know it sucks, it's not an uncommon response. That's why i don't really post here anymore, because usually, by the time i see the articles i want to post on, people have pretty much already said what i wanted to say. What i'd have to say wouldn't really add much to the conversation, no matter how deep (or not) it is.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
To answer your question, no, I guess it's not a big deal...the first one hundred times you see the same thing. I've watched him post pretty much the same four things for months ever since he got here: "FAIL", "WIN", "FACEPALM", or some form of crying to Dennis/the mods. I consider that a form of spam, because it's tiresome to read and doesn't add anything to the conversation, which is what I visit this site for. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.
"We all know it sucks..."
Thank you for making my point. I too, have noticed that other posters usually beat me to the punch on most topics, so I post less frequently than I used to in the LJ days. Redundancy benefits no one, so if a person has nothing to add, he shouldn't post something meaningless just because he likes to see his username up there.

Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
I disagree, I don't think it sucks at all. Honestly, the circuit city stores I went to in the last few years were all crap, with idiotic salesmen who didn't even know what 'S-video' was. It's just as bad as the best buy in the Mall of America in Minneapolis; they have a guitar shop built into it, but it is staffed by people with no knowledge of guitars.
There's a reason that people don't shop at certain stores. You don't go to Sun Coast to buy all your DVD's do you? Or FYE? Why? The staff tend to be snooty, and the DVD's tend to be 3 to 10 dollars overpriced.
Circuit city lost, good riddance.

I may go to the circut city just to scavange for a few titles.

Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
The good news is we lost one of the worst retailers when it comes to ratings enforcement.
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2008/05/secretshop.shtm
Also, don't expect any good deals at any liquidation sales. Liquidators hike prices up 50% or more and then discount the items 10-30%. So you will not save any money.

The Better news is, one of the worst electronics retailers just folded. Though if the CompUSA "Sale" taught us anything, expect no deals what so ever.

Yup. Now if we could just lose Best Buy, that whole 'annoy the customer as much as possible by asking them if they need help' thing will be just a horrible memory.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
Ugh, no kidding.
The CompUSA near us had a returned 360, no power supply for $180. "May not boot". That's worth $180???
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
What are yout talking about. I remember games in that store right at the end were like dirt cheap. Forced Unleashed was like $30.
Re: R.I.P. Circuit City
There have also been reports of the DS at 30% off.
Marked down to $159!
