Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of Plans to Legislate Games

January 17, 2009 -

A live blog of Jack Thompson's Saturday morning keynote address to the ultra-conservative Utah Eagle Forum has been published at Mormon Bloggers.

Judging by the post, Thompson delivered his standard anti-video game rap. The disbarred attorney apparently also laid out his latest strategy to legislate games:

The impact of aggressive, violent, and pornographic videos simply can’t be denied. Jack cited case after case in which people like a young Devin, immersed in things like Theft in the City, went home and shot his parents, saying to the police,  something to this effect: “Everybody has to die, just like in video games.”

The man who killed on Trolley Square, said Jack Thompson, was apparently training on Theft in the City or something similar.  One part of that violent video illustrates an individual going to a high point in a mall and shooting in random people he doesn’t know.  This training ground has made victims in Columbine, in Miami, in  Paduka [sic], and needs to stop here.

Jack Thompson– attorney, crusader in fighting the entertainment media’s marketing of violent materials to minors, and  author of Out of Harm’s Way–is supportive of an upcoming a bill, which if drafted properly and put in the hopper here in Utah will stop the sale of these games to minors.

Currently, the Fraud and Deceptive Trade Pact Act says that if you sell a product and misrepresent what it does or is, it is simply fraudulent.  Walmart, Target, Best Buy assert in corporate sites, statements, and press releases that they will not sell a mature-rated violent to a minor.  Age verification software, though available through Ideology and other programs, are dismissed by these companies.  This is something we can enforce.

If you’d like to know more, check with Eagle Forum.  If you are informed and are willing to make a call, please let your legislators know that this bill should be passed.

GP: Couple of points here... The blogger characterizes Thompson as an attorney, but as GamePolitics readers know, he was disbarred for life by the Florida Supreme Court in October. As we pointed out last week, the agenda for the Utah Eagle Forum event also lists him as an attorney. At this time it is unknown whether the audience for Thompson's keynote address was told of his permanently disbarred status. If so, the blogger makes no reference to it.

Clearly unfamiliar with video game issues, the live blogger also gets a few of the details wrong. But that's not unexpected as Thompson was apparently going on about several cases in which he blames video games for violent crimes. The "Devin" mentioned by the blogger, for example, would be Devin Moore, who killed two police officers and a dispatcher in Alabama, not his parents.

Most amusingly, "Theft in the City" would be Grand Theft Auto, of course.

UPDATE: In relation to Thompson's scheme to legislate games in Utah, the question now becomes whether the disbarred attorney has any state legislators on board. We would suspect that Gayle Ruzicka, the politically influential president of the Utah Eagle Forum and an ally of Thompson's, will be able to persuade someone in the legislature to introduce Thompson's bill.

Could the sponsor end up being one of three Utah legislators who also spoke at the UEF convention? Those would be the controversial Sen. Chris Buttars (R) as well as Reps. Carl Wimmer (R) and Christopher Herrod (R).

UPDATE 2: In its coverage of the UEF convention, the Deseret News makes no mention of the proposed video game legislation, but quotes Thompson's verbal shot at President-elect Barack Obama:

Outside of social issues, conventioneers and speakers alike expressed concern about the upcoming term of President-elect Barack Obama.

"On Jan. 20 we are entering what I believe will be a time of peril for this country," said speaker Jack Thompson. "And that is Barack Obama."

UPDATE 3: Thompson e-mailed GP to assert that he made his disbarment known to the UEF convention audience:

I told everyone there I was disbarred, and said in my first speech that I was a 'recovering attorney.'

You know, it sounds like she's just blogging what he's saying...like she just heard that video games caused violence for the first time and that obviously it does because this attorney is citing all the cases where it has. It's not that she's ignorant to what's really going on...it's that for all she knows this is what's going on...so these are the people that he reaches out to.

I've alway thought that arguing with him on the website made no sense, simply because almost every one on this site knows that he's just spouting lies and leaving out key parts of the evidence.

We'll never be able to change Jack's mind, but if we can talk to people like her and show her what the facts are then Jack would truly be powerless.

It may work

America has just became its own version of the Jerry Springer Show after a bizarre moment in Florida involving a carnival worker.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Wow, they just proved on how much research they did with the most blatant errors I ever seen.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

I see Jack's found his niche, preaching to people who don't actually understand most of what he's talking about...

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Theft in the City? The game by Sarah Jessica Parker?

Onto a serious note, I see once again factual accuracy is not a priority amongst those that would limit speech.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Well no.

This is a group that claims to base all thier political beliefs off clear scripture.  If accuracy were something they cared about they would realize just how much they have cheerypicked WHICH parts of scripture they are forcing on everyone and which parts they have decided to ignore.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

I think we've just seen a preview of the next GTA. "Grand Theft Auto IV: Theft In The City". It kinda works, I think they should use it.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

The main baddie should be based off of Jack Thompson.  The real "theft in the city" will be a law making video games an illegal product.  You are working for a number of underground game sellers and developers who are trying to stay a step ahead of this new law.

That game would sell kinda well if done right.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

That'd be pretty cool, they could even bring back Zero from San Andreas as a game store owner

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Wait, wait...

... isn't it against the law to tell people that you're an attorney when you're really not? I thought it was.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

I think so, but technically JT himself isn't saying he's a lwayer. Someone else is and he hasn't bothered to correct the mistake.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Is he technically a "lawyer"? Since all that a lawyer is someone who gets a degree in law? I'm not sure about this. How is it done in the USA?

I in no way like, approve, or even care for a windbag like JT. He's an idiot to say the absolute minimum.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

no. to be a lawyer, you must be certified as such by a Bar.  Thompson has been disbarred, and thus is not legally allowed to practise law anywhere. and if he says he's a lawyer, that's also illegal.

the problem here is he probably "conveniently forgot" to tell everyone he isn't a lawyer anymore.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Query, could he get into trouble by knowlingly allow someone else to misrepresent him? As in being announced as a lawyer, but not correcting them?

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Good question, we have a couple law students and maybe a couple lawyers that come by, anyone of the legal persuasion care to answer this?

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Why should he bother to correct anything? Jack Thompson operates in the margins of confusion.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Theft in the City? That's hilarious.

If you go crazy then I will still call you Superman.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Clearly accuracy is not a high priority for these Utah Eagle fellas.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

So why not go and post clear accurate comments refuting their views.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Sad thing is this is one of the less threatening topics the eagle forum is going after.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Darn.  Still no details on this new and allegedly bulletproof bit of legislation.  Oh well, we'll get to see it sooner or later.

And I'm sure it will be just as effective and successful as everything else Thompson's done.

Religious people will sooner prove a God than Thompson will prove himself as a lawyer again. I will give my life savings to the person that proves that God is against any of the video games Thompson is against. [Though the life savings fun is dwindling in these economic times. So get it while it last, haha.]

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

I got it now! I understand how they consider it bulletproof. They will dress the new bill up with mormon magic underwear in attempts to "protect" it from the constitution!

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Wow what a completely ignorant and disrespectful statement.

Hi... Welcome to the site. You're new here, right?

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Methinks it was sarcasm against Jack and his hatred for you Mormons. I don't know, though.

They're mormons, their own religion condemns itself (Bible sez: No addons, no deletions, so wtf is the book of mormon?)

hahaha....  haha...  Joseph Smith Jr. is definitely a messenger of God, and his son is Jesus...  No not the 2000 year ago Jesus, the one that is alive and kicking today, the Mexican one claiming to be the son of God.

Religulous was a funny movie by the way.

Re: Live Blog: Jack Thompson Tells Utah Conservative Group of

Well, obviously if it removes "Theft in the City" from store shelves, it will be a monumental victory Jack Thompson & Friends.

I also love how they gloss over the ESRB rating system and whatever company policies retailers may have pertaining to the sale of M rated games to minors.  And by gloss I mean completely ignore or are ignorant of them.

That statement doesn't paint Jack Thompson as a racist at all...
