Police in Ohio have charged a 19-year-old Michigan man with traveling to Parma and raping a 12-year-old boy.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Codey Hawks (left) met his victim on Xbox Live where he played an unspecified online game with the boy and his father.
From the newspaper report:
Hawks... called the victim's family when he arrived [in Ohio] and asked if he could stay with them. Hawks said he'd joined the National Guard and was to ship out in February.
At some point, the parents became suspicious and confronted their son about his relationship with Hawks. They called police after learning its nature.
Compton said Parma detectives questioned Hawks and he admitted that he assaulted the boy while staying at the family's home when the parents weren't there. Hawks now is in the county jail.
Police are looking for other victims...

Ummmm...what the flying fuck were the parents thinking letting this guy stay at his house? Seriously, what the fuck were they thinking? (And I never use bold text!) Had I brought up that idea with my parents, the conversation would have gone something like this;
Me: "Hey mom and dad, can this guy I met on Xbox LIVE come and stay at our place?"
Parents: "Are you stupid? No!"

Whilst I feel for the 12 year old, and his parents, I can't help wondering what they were thinking letting a 19 year old that the boy met anyhere stay at their house unsupervised like that?
It is a mistake they will, unfortunately, be paying for for a long time :(
As for the molestor, I hope he is caught, and I sincerely hope that he recieves the justice he deserves, poor choices by the parents or not, a crime is a crime and deserves punishment.

Interesting. Like most of you, I am hoping they find the son of a bitch and fuck him with sawwed off table-leg. What concerns me about this is the possibility of another case of wierd shit happening over Xbox Live / Playstation Network etc where the authorities are jonesing for the legislation to make all gamertag details public record about the users behind them.

I must say, this is a refreshing change. I spend time on the gamefaqs forums for JRPGs, and there people practically celebrate thier pedophilia. It's nice to meet other people that revile it as much as I do.
In any case, I think this is a valid arguement for removing anyone younger than 17 from XBox Live. As the anti-gamers would say, "For the Children!!!"

Also the whole Stranger Danger thing is a little missinterpretated.
People seem to think that Pedophiles are old men with candy.
But in reality, pedophiles can be anyone anywhere at any time. It is not what you look like but it is what you do in real life that makes you into that person.
Some people will try to say it is "because of videogames" or even "because of Anime" but the reality is that many pedophiles are neither interested in videogames or anime.
So before anyone points the finger of blame on a minority, we should all think carefully and just play a simple rule of thumb, be careful about who you trust.

I can't believe people are retarded enough to let a stranger stay in their home, one who they've only met online before once (or even a couple of times!). Don't get me wrong, I think my online friends are great, but I'd be worried that I'd wake up with them standing over my bed about to press a pillow to my face...
And the parents only got suspicious "at some point". Surely anyone who lives in the real world can see that it's suspicious for a new online friend to ask to stay in your house...The newspaper article says he turned up around Jan 15th. Surely the boy's parents weren't gonna put him up for 2 weeks "until he shipped out"?

He means simply becuasea pedophile only has an attraction where as a child molester actually acts on it. Though many argue a pedophile is just a future child molester. The point is he's saying it's like saying someone has an interest in something is 100 percent guarentee they'll do it. That he's not just a pedophile but a child molester.
Pedophile only implies thoughts and urges and attraction technically. Though most media and people use the two terms interchangably. Not a very clear explination but I'm sure you get the gist nya.

According to the report, this man raped a child. Sure it's possible he's not a pedophile but there's nothing in the little information we've seen to indicate that he's not.

You missed the point entirely. Pedophile implies only thoughts and wants. Child molester is the rapist. By putting child molester instead of pedophile it would be more accurate. Amoung other things. I don't want to compare pedophilia to sexuality but It's like saying Straight man rapes just of age girl. Sure straight guys like girls, young girls, but they don't always rape them.

Yes, being a pedophile does not make you a rapist or child molester. Raping or molesting children makes you a rapist or child molester.
The definition of a pedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to children. Sounds like this guy is sexually attracted to children if he's stalking one and raped him. That would make him a pedophile.
So, I don't see the issue with the headline. Sure it's possible this guy was just really hard up or perhaps has really low self esteem and took advantage of someone smaller to feel better about himself but there's nothing indicating that.
If your point is that "pedophile" has an unfair stigma attached to it, I agree with you but its application seems very likely to be appropriate in this case.
EDIT: Out of curiosity, what would you suggest for a new headline?

Nobody implied he wasn't a pedophile.
But using that word instead is like saying they met over "an online gaming service" instead of "Xbox Live". Or that the rapist was "of legal age" instead of "age 19". The more accurate information is available, it's just not being applied to the headline.

It's not like the xbox is to blame here. The dad was in the same room while they played, the parents agreed to let him stay. It's sad though, Child molesters should be punished or preferably stopped beforehand.

Well yeah the parents dropped the ball, but pedophiles and child molesters don't always look like pedos and child molesters. There seems to still be some conception that they're creepy hunched over wierdos with candy in their trench coat.
People don't always even know when their own family members are child molesters. But still bad call letting some stranger into your house. I know theres a few online friends I have that I would invite over if needed but I'd still keep an eye on them. And I know them through more then just an online game or one website.
