Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's Nintendo DS Game

Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's Nintendo DS Game

January 27, 2009

GameCulture reports on the strange case of an Indiana mother who has complained that her 8-year-old daughter's Baby Pals game for the Nintendo DS speaks the phrase "Islam is the light."

Readers may recall that a remarkably similar controversy last fall centered around Fisher-Price's Little Mommy Cuddle and Coo doll. And, in fact, the mother in this case, Rachel Jones, was also one of those who complained about her child's Cuddle and Coo doll.

In regard to the doll controversy, Mattel issued a statement in October which said that the only scripted word was "mama" and other baby talk sounds were gibberish.

Urban Legends reports that an audio expert experimented with the Cuddle and Coo doll and found that the phrase most closely sounded like "It's not near the light."

In fairness, the sound uttered by the DS game sounds exactly like the one that caused so much controversy in regard to the doll. We're wondering if Crave, publisher of Baby Pals, somehow licensed the same digitized audio file.

GP: So, is this a case of anti-Islamic paranoia or subtle indoctrination of America's youth? What do you think, GP readers?

I'm willing to bet there is either a free, or at least cheaply licenced, library of baby cooing. It's kind of like Everywhere Girl. Something cheaply licenced and so it gets used anytime you need baby sounds.

I tend to agree.

You wouldnt believe the idiots in Indiana, and the stupid things they bring to people's attention.  I really think people like this lady have nothing better to do with their lives, and have no idea of sound libraries.  Indiana is pretty much a walking stereotype trying to break free from itself, but fails at every turn.

With ya there.  I love it here

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I live in Indiana as well, though what I'm about to say is more about my hometown than Indiana as a whole.  Turns out I like Indianapolis and its people much better.

I grew up around people who are wholly ignorant.  Half the guys in my school were willful idiots, as in they could have been better or smarter, but just didn't give a damn.  They also had really short tempers, one guy actually tried to pick a fight with me because I called him out on not following safety rules in the gym (using clips on weights while benching) and a 45 pound plate fell off and landed about 3 inches from my foot.  Know what the general reaction to that incident was?  "Bah, he would have gotten his ass kicked..." and various comments like that.

Everyone owns a pickup truck, they all are loud as hell in both engine and speaker systems, and a lot of people are religious nutjobs.

Looking at it in that light, its pretty easy for me to imagine someone being upset over hearing something like that, whether its true or not.  People here don't like being told that they are wrong, or that someone might know better than them.  Particularly when it comes to children, and equally as much when it comes to religious beliefs different from their own.

Of course, thats not to say everyone is like that.  Despite how I feel about quite a number of people where I grew up, I've met several people who actually use their heads, adn the number of them seems to be increasing as I am associating with older people.  I guess our youth here in Indiana is just messed up.  I still like the state though, wish they had more game related companies so that I don't have to move out to find a job in the gaming industry.

EDIT: cut out like half the crap I said, was way too long and sounded angsty.  I really do like my state, im just not a big fan of my hometown.

Okay, everyone here in Indiana, how much inches of snow do you have?  I have about 10"...  Just dug the girlfriend's car out, and helpped 3 neighbors out of the parking lot...  Insane snow...

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

A similar amount here.  I'm just happy that I knew someone who owned a snow blower.  It would have taken hours to handle my driveway and sidewalk with a dang shovel.  Doesn't help at all that i'm out of shape (not fat, just not active at all), so I get winded easily, lol.

I basically had to body check my screen door to open it up, there was so much snow.

Nope... Just the 60+ million ignoramuses who voted for Barack "the Almighty Messiah" Obama are.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

You. Are. An. Idiot.

Ever notice how the only people that even mention Obama as the Messiah are conservatives of the fox news variety, in other words, idiots.

I also find it extremly ironic that you call those that voted for Obama ignoramuses considering that one of the focuses of McCain's campaign was that Obama was a Harvard elitist out of touch with the "everyday american" despite the fact the McCain owns seven, or was it eight houses, well turns out that the actual everyday American is intelligent enough to realize that the Republicans fucked us over after electing a man who's only goal for his presidency was to catch his version of Cobra Commander(and failing miserably) and Darth Cheney.

I am the Everyday American so are the people that voted with me, you are the Ignoramus of this tale, the idiot the refuses to better himself.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

And here we return to my favorite topic, the invisible profit Cheney supposedly made with Halliburton during the 8 years of the W presidency.

Except, sadly, he never had a paying position.  He was always on the board of directors.  His profit from it?  $0, but years ago he did get some lovely stock, most of which was in other companies with a few shares of Halliburton as a thank you.

Now let's turn to the invisible 'war in Iraq' profit.  The oil rigs in Iraq were, much like last time, lit aflame, and there are THREE oil companies in the world that are capable of handling oil rigs in that condition.  One is German (or French), one is RUSSIAN, and one is American.  Which would you rather have doing that work, the people who decided not to help, or the people who brought with them some of the best food the soldiers have eaten since being deployed there?

Oh, and he accidentally shot a guy with a shotgun.  Big fucking deal.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I never said anything about Haliburton, I was refering to the whole approving torture thing and the shooting his friend in the face with a shotgun.

also if you were shot in the face with a shotgun by the VP would you say "big fucking deal"?

You know what, if you've played Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" backwards?

You hear the devil speaks...

But I think its all an urban legend.

Though, I'm sure extremists are all about corrupting our youth. *sigh*

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Oddly enough, that was the first thing I thought of when I read this. You can trick yourself into hearing a lot of stuff if you want to. Listen to Stairway to Heaven backward without a set of supposed lyrics, and you'll only hear gibberish. Pull up a set of words, and your brain will trick you into hearing the words. It's probably the same thing with this lady and the doll.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Humans have a built in mechanism in our brains to make sense out of randomness.  For seeing, it's called paradolia.  I have no idea what the technical term is for the hearing version of this, but I know that, if we can look at a door/tortilla/(insert stupid object here) and see Jesus/The Virgin Mary/(insert stupid religious individual here), then we likely have the same wiring in our heads for sounds, to recoginze and make sense out of it.

After all, its better to believe that the charging animals are going to run you over, you move and nothing happens, then it is for you to not recognize the sounds, and get your face turned into hamburger.

Yeah, kinda reminds me of the anti-Christian, anti-American leftists on this board who choose to live in denial and disillusion themselves into thinking that Islam is a peaceful and tolerant religion that would never bring to harm anyone who doesn't subscribe to their radical beliefs.  Just ask the victims' families of 9/11.

But I get it with the leftists... Blame America and Christians first.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Hey man, ever remember the phrase "Judge not lest ye be judged"?

Or should I just assume that your Christianity stands for suicide pacts, fiddling with little boys and killing gay people and jews in the thousands?

Because I mean after all, the people that did those things were all Christian, right? Surely they represent Christianity.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Don't forget witch burnings, inquistions and torture of non believers and christian cults that the christians in power disagreed with(or would inconvenience the churches power monopoly).  While christian conservatives almays make a big deal about how many non-christian leaders killed, we really have no idea the number of people killed by christian leaders (they didnt exactly keep great history records in the past and the winner never writes down the number of people killed in a war/inquistion/crusade).  Just look at Iraq, we can tell you the exact number of Americans killed, but no one really knows the amount of Iraqis killed.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I think it's offencive for finding that phase offencive.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

This is pathetic, I bet if it said "Christianity is the light" she wouldn't have complained. It's like they're saying that Islamic messages shouldn't be taught or something. In my opinion, anyone should have the right to see all religions, beliefs or whatever else and be what they want to be. This line is insignificant and she is blocking her child from having the chance of believing in Islam if the child should want to.

Note: I'm not saying Islam, Christianity or any other form of belief is right or wrong. I just think everyone should have a fair choice.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

My reaction exactly.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I'm Christian and I believe that if a game referred to any religion even my own that I'd be offended...specially if it's geared at small children...it's a parents job to instill morals. I was Raised Luthran...guess what? I'm not Luthran...I'm pretty much a non denomination Christian that sees all Religions in some form or another as ajoined to the others (So maybe I'm Agnostic with Christian tendancies), I think personally that Religion should only play as much a roll in a child's life as learning morals...they don't get to choose their religion until they're old enough to choose it without outside influence...most kids if bridgejump Religion was the fad would practice that to be in with the popular kids...Let them get old enough to decide before saying they should choose because kids (Specially 8 year olds) are stupid in the popularity sense...and yes I've met a number of intellegent 11,12,13 year olds and so forth...but Socially they're still morons...and to me a Religion or lack there of is a really huge decission and they're too flighty to choose at that point (There are however always exceptions to the rules...)

If you don't like his editorial style and content, you can leave. There is nothing holding you here. He doesn't have to report on every single game studio closing or laying off workers. He has made some general state of the industry posts that covered the layoffs to some degree.

But as it seems you are well aware of studio layoffs, perhaps you don't need Dennis to report on it. You just want to project yourself and your priorities on this site.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

But the trouble is he has articled dev closings before and the sudden ignoring of them is...well.... annoying, that and this 2nd hand sensationalist crap is..well...more annoying.

I have decided I will be leaving messages about my discontent with his...mmm.... choices of articles he picks, at least for as long as I can remember and with my luck that should be a day or 2.

I am not the only one that thinks if you are going to do generalized game news that closings and other..er... REAL game related stuff is more important than a guy jacking off his console or other such similar crap.  This dose not mean I will post in every shooter slayer article whining about something, just the more unimportant followup's GP tends to do for the sake of sensitization.

The reason hard news died was becuse it chose to become entertainment , the reason I come to GP is its been able to mix the 2 for the past year its been getting more fluffy and I don't care for it but thats probably do to the new owners/partners(ECA) pressing their weight around.

I am already seeing news and official comments based to districted from real issues..I am hoping its just my tinfoil glasses that are getting in the way...

I shouldn't be breaking any rules being bothered with the way GP is doing things I am not offensive(but for my rapeing grammar) and stating as much, and I also see no need to truly insult merely point out the apparent failings of the day in a humorous yet repetitive thus boring way. Not to mention I rag on myself more.... *insert tampon+zippy+virgin joke here*
LOL
:P

PS:
Luv you man, but I completely disagree it would be nice if a competent  site tried to remain competent covering important news and keeping score of closings as they are just starting to get worse the fact you and Dennis do not see that and are not wanting to keep track what parts of the industry are going to fail do to the world financial  system going boom..is just arrogant and incompetent.... rough times are coming someone needs to keep track and stay focused and not just chase skirts and blow their budget on cheap whine and cheaper women(mostly sensationalist story's).

 ---

Edit

Mind you I am looking at the site as more a new based one than poltics since GP did open up the format more but what he really did was open up to anything that can be politicized. Still massive layoffs and closings are something to not be so ignored.....

Besides, it's just Islam -- a very large, mainstream religion that is practiced by millions of peaceful, law-abiding people all over the world.  It's not like it's some crazy cult.  Admittedly I still haven't started reading the free Quran that I picked up last week -- the Muslim Students' Club at my university was handing them out -- but from what I know of it, it's an awful lot like the bible but with some extra stuff tacked on and a few bits reintepreted, kinda like what Christians did to Judaism.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Well said. I'm also against religious indoctrination, in fact I'm against indoctrination of any kind.

People should not force their views on others. They should be more open to how others view things, and not condemn them unless what they plan to do with their views threatens to either endanger or indoctrinate other people.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I remember playing Mortal Kombat and hearing Raiden's scream as he "supermanned" himself towards the opponent. Me and my friends all hear different things. One thought he helled "Raiden bubbly!", I thought he said "Your mother is from LA"...and other absurd things.

This would be an example of hearing gibberish and placing your own paranoid thoughts into it...and hearing what you want to hear. Sadly I see Fox jumping all over this one for the next week.

Actually to me it sounded like "Is the ham on the right" :)

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's
I think it is more of Islam-phobia. Like how we still have many people today with Videogame-phobia. I feel sorry for the Islamic people who are honest but have their belief caught in the cross fire of mainstreem media persucution so many times since that horrible day. I feel for them.
Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I like the comment "This game is rated E for everyone, which means it's supposed to be suitable for all ages."

...does that mean you're equating a comment about Islam with swearing, porn, and violence?

I freaking hate ignorant people.

Second, what a stretch.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Looks like the argument of this group can be reduced to 'Islam == Shariah == Child marraige == material risk for girls'

So if their daughters hear 'islam is the light' they will up and get themselves an arranged marriage to some middle aged polygamist.  And at that point we get into 'why take the risk?' territory.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I'm going with "anti-Islamist paranoia."  Kinda like when they were claiming Obama was a Muslim as a smear campaign, and even his supporters could only say, "No he's not."  The correct response was, "Why would that matter, why would that be a negative?"

Islam and Muslims = bad.  Apparently.  Fear the differences!

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

A look at the bible and the koran would show how completely different Islam and Christianity are.  But most people like to stay in there world of ignorance and recite what others say without fact checking, kind of like this newsclip.  But that's for another time.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Quoth the Holy Quran (3:45):

Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his name will be Christ Jesus, the son of Mary, held in honour in this world and the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah; "He shall speak to the people in childhood and in maturity. And he shall be (of the company) of the righteous." She said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?" He said: "Even so: Allah creates what He wills: when He has decreed a Plan, He but says to it, 'Be,' and it is! And Allah will teach him the Book and Wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel, and (appoint him) a Messenger to the Children of Israel"

Yep, totally different!

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I would say less 'differnt' and more 'superset/subset'.  Islam is a branch of Christianity (kinda like Mormonism only more so) that accepts both the Christian and Jewish texts as cannon.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Er...not exactly.  Islam, like Christianity and Judaism, is an Abrahamic religion.  The similarities exist because all three religions come from the same place.  Islam isn't a subset of Christianity; Muhammad wasn't a Christian who started his own faction. xD

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Things tend to get a bit murkey when one tries to pull apart the tangled roots of various faiths.

In Islam's case, as I understood it you had (local faiths) + (influence of Christian Monks) + (new stuff from Muhammad).  So Christianity formed one of the roots.  While in theory Islam claims to go back to the root Abrahamic piece and rebuild from there in practice they built off a snapshot of current Chrisitian faith and modified from there.

Is there a particular reason you're such an ass to those that don't assume all muslims are terrorists?

So the logical response it to troll, because this accomplishes so much. Your response to why Obama being a Muslim matters doesn't even make sense. Kid, you're so concerned about taking pot shots at liberals/left/Democrats/etc, that your posts are mostly nonsense at this point.

As for this woman, I saw of video clip of the doll speaking a while back and the sound quality of the toy was so poor, you could barely make out "mama." Poor kid is going to be banned from owning any toy that makes noise in that household soon enough.

What Christian propaganda?  No one in the video mentions anyone being a Christian.  Just curious.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

Not specifically in that video no - but it's rife with hypocrisy

My point is that Jebus & God are all through the media, be it games, the news, movies, books, presidential speeches... but the I-bomb in dropped in some random video game and it's breaking news.

Totally agree with you there.  If I had a dime for every time that somebody shoved God and Christ in my face, I'd be a rich man.

Wow.  The "I-bomb."  As a Muslim, let me be the first to say that I find that absolutely hilarious. xD

Fox News is a cable news channel, seen nationally.  This appears to be a local TV news operation.  Local TV is often a dump of bad, poorly sourced information designed to drum up viewers.  "Full story at 11!"

Oh MY GOD!!!(not to be confused with your god or their god, if you do you will go to hell...wait do I believe in hell? ah whatever...)

This is the Islamic terror invasion that President Bush warned us about for 8 years... We went to Iraq so that these things wouldn't happen hear... (Though the reasons changed so much that I can't be certain...) Now look what you ultra liberals did!!! Only a few days since your secret muslim president (or is he a communist I get these things confused, hmm is there anyone that watches fox news to tell me the current nick name for the president?) takes power and the invasion comes... we are all going to die, aa la ah(just random screams not meant to be anything else). great just great...

Of course, there hasn't been another attack on American soil since 9/11/01 thanks to President Bush (and no thanks to the liberals, Democrat Party, and Drive-By media who tried to do everything in their power to undermine the war effort from the beginning).  Of course, now that we have a president of highly questionable affiliations and origins who is willing to sit across the bargaining table with mad dictators like Ahmadinejad and Chavez, I guess we're all supposed to feel safe now.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

There have been thousands of attacks on americans since 9/11... and Iraq war made the problem many times greater than it was...

I am not against war, I am against wars for oil...when alteranatives can easily be developed and implemented with similar monetary investments... so I am against pointless wars...

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

It's not because of, it's in spite of Bush's action that we haven't had another attack on US soil, the bombing and the loss of civilian life and the torture are used by the terrorists to recrut new suicide bombers.  Bush is like a guy that drives by a dry forest and flicks a lit ciggarette into it then later says that it was because of the ciggarette flicking the the forest didn't burn down, when really it was in spite of his actions that the forest didn't burn down

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

I'm more disturbed about this that this mother doesn't like the message 'islam is the light' more than anything.

Does she just flat out hate the muslim religion? and why? because extremists twisted what their scriptures actually mean?

What if it said "jesus is the light" ?

Would she have complained as much then?

It's these questions I need answers to find out why people dowhat they do.

Re: Indiana Mom: "Islam is the Light" Message in Child's

It sounds to me like you have never read the Quran.  "Islam is Light," is a fallacy much in the same vein as, "Christianity is Tolerance."

http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/int/long.html

http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/quran/cruelty/long.html

I'll admit she should have just pitched the toy into the trash if she was that offended (the game, too).  And she's ignorant as to how our brains make patterns from nothing because it's how we perceive our surroundings, when we ony really "see" a small fraction of what we perceive.  It's obvious that she'd rather be outraged and offended than learn from this situation, which is my major issue with her actions.

However, it's worth noting that you can be anti-Islam, and not be a bigot or paranoid.
