Obama's Exclusive Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes Congressional Game Biz Critics

February 1, 2009 -

Between the food, the football, the commercials and the schmoozing, it's unlikely that the topic of video game regulation will come up at President Barack Obama's White House Super Bowl party this evening.

But if it does, at least two of the Congressional types on his small, bipartisan guest list have some background on the issue.

In December, 2007 Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) stood with Dr. David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and Family as Walsh zinged the video game industry for what he referred as "an ominous backslide."

Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), who is known for almost never missing a vote, proposed a 2005 Congressional resolution directing the FTC to investigate the Hot Coffee scandal. In 2006 he sponsored the  Video Game Decency Act, a piece of legislation which ultimately failed to pass.

Perhaps more interesting than the (admittedly unlikely) video game angle is trying to decipher the formula used by the Prez in determining his guest list:

  • 11 Democrats, 4 Republicans
  • 5 from Pennsylvania (Steelers?)
  • 2 from Arizona (Cardinals?)
  • 1 from Illinois (Obama's old Senate partner)
  • 1 each from Minnesota, Maryland, Michigan, DC, Alabama, Connecticut and New Hampshire

So he didn't invite any of the thousands of people freezing to death in Kentucky? I mean, he's sure dragging his feet even acknowleding that people are dying over there, the least he could do is invite them over to his house that heated to a nice, toasty 77 degrees. After all, the rest of us aren't allowed to heat our houses up like that. Europe doesn't allow it, donchewknow.

Actually with a quick look around on news sights, Obama supposedly has responded to what's going on over there and they are getting federal aid... the governer and a lot of Kentuckians are supposedly pleased with his timely responce and thankful for the aid (atleast the ones who have power or some other way of getting online to comment); though there are other sites mentioing the displeasuer and slow moving aid aswell... typical media i supposed, black and white coverage instead of that shade of gray that represents the reality of the situation...

it still sucks over there, but just because federal aid is coming doesn't mean the sitituation will be done with over night... i think one of the problems i've heard is that there is a lack of equiptment for dealing with ice storms down in the sought and that's really slowing down things. I imagine a lot of equitement would need to be shipped in from other states.... they'd be better at dealing with this stuff in the north, but down south they got much less equitpment on hand.

grant it, i only took a quick look around and their aren't a lot of details... didn't look into it all that throughouly... kinda need to look deeper into these things... so yeah...

Re: Obama's Exclusive Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes

I don't know how pleased they are when they're begging for aid just yesterday, what with no federal help yet.  Hell, they had to use their own national guard to help clear roads, dig people out of cars, and other ridiculous shit.

Of course, its the whole 'just because federal aid is coming doesn't mean the sitituation will be done with over night' train of thought I find most hilarious; people are saying this now, but I don't recall them saying it during Katrina, which was actually the local government's fucking fault.

Also, Kentucky isn't far enough south that they don't have equipment for heavy snow and ice.  I don't know where you heard about that 'problem', but I was just in state yesterday and didn't hear about it from any first responders.

Re: Obama's Exclusive Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes

Oh man, why doesn't FEMA go to Kentucky?  It seems like they're unprepared to me.

Re: Obama's Exclusive Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes

I suppose Obama is hoping <sniker> Global Warming <sniker> will take care of it so he doesn't have to.

Re: Obama's Exclusive Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes

Were we not promised anti-games legislation from Obama?  A certain far-right Republican (who undoubetly has the president's ear...in his own mind) we all know and love said so!   Maybe this is the beginning...or not.

What, no representation from Biden's home state of Delaware???

ahem, Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania(he's the only Delaware Senator/Vice President of the United states to attend the superbowl party)

Very, very true PHX. Along that line, note the tags for the article.

But if it did...  GP has you covered.

Re: Obama's Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes Congressional

Re: Obama's Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes Congressional

I also think it's indicative of his youth (or at least shows his relevance to the youth) when the President decides to throw a Super Bowl party.

Re: Obama's Super Bowl Party Guest List Includes Congressional

The president gets a super bowl party? Is this because the super bowl is big, or does he get to have 1 party for any sport or telivision event he pleases?

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm

Matthew Wilsonthe sad thing is there are trolls on both sides of this. people need to stop acting like their side is so pure.10/18/2014 - 12:19pm
MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
Matthew Wilsonwhile he focused on gg, he did call out both sides crap.10/17/2014 - 7:18pm
