North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... Legislators Fail at DDR

February 6, 2009 -

Bismarck's KYFR-5 reports that North Dakota's First Lady Mikey Hoeven (sporting the big hair at left) has played a bit of Guitar Hero. And the wife of Gov. John Hoeven (R) isn't bad at Dance Dance Revolution, either.

News of Mrs. Hoeven's gaming chops leaked during an American Heart Association event at the State Capitol. KYFR reports that legislators who gave DDR a try didn't fare nearly as well as the First Lady:

Sen. Dwight Cook knows a thing or two about North Dakota politics, but there was one thing going on at the capitol today that was over his head.

"It's not easy, it`s not easy at all," Cook says.

The response most legislators had after testing out Dance, Dance Revolution... Unfortunately, legislators weren`t so enthused about the high-tech workout.

"Most of them, I think, are a little shy or shy away from it because of the technology, I think they`re afraid like `Oh is this going to move too fast for me?` And `I can`t do this,`" says [gym teacher Tammi] Doppler...

First Lady Mikey Hoeven was among the top scoring in the political sector. But she admits, she had the upper hand as the concept of the game isn`t new because she`s played Guitar Hero.

Wake me up when someone in Congress plays Beatmania IIDX or Pop'n Music. On a regular basis.

Yeah, yeah.  Another legislator that played GH or DDR, the video games for people who have no clue about video games.  Inform me when you find a Senator that plays Left 4 Dead.

Re: North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... Legislators

Left 4 Dead is not that lesser-known compared to GH or DDR.

Re: North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... ...

And some of these people claim to know all about videogames regardless of ever being brave enough to try out Videogames.

I remember hearing on the video of the game Night Trap and how the government were calling the game "Load of Filth and needs to be banned"

The developer of Night Trap who was in the audience asked the senator had he ever played the game before and this was the senator's responce

"I don't need to play this game, I know it is filth."

Sadly I don't think that people can change if they get too old and so set in their ways and opinions that they are just so unwilling to listen to anyone.

Night Trap was yet another game that would have died sooner had people just shut up about it.

Anyone with a big family can win an election in North Dakota.

Re: North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... Legislators

The eventual take over of the government by people who aren't afraid of technology has already begun. Soon, fear mongerors will have to target something else.

Might I suggest aliens?

Re: North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... Legislators

I'd be more concerned about Predators myself.  Perhaps we could ask Sigourney Weaver, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Danny Glover to head up a task force to help us combat this threat.

Re: North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... Legislators

I'm more concerned with the Lambada.  In the last thirty years the so-called 'forbidden dance' has not lost any of its diabolical capability for corrupting our younger generation.  All this distraction over videogames has created a situation where youngsters go to nightclubs and writhe around in such a state of moral depravity that they emerge from dance halls and discos in a state of complete moral breakdown.  It's disgusting and it needs to be stopped!

Alternatively, I'm also all for a good old fashioned witch hunt against GINGERS!

Re: North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... Legislators

Eh, with how fast holographic tech is coming along, I'd say that is next in line of the endless dance

Re: North Dakota's 1st Lady Plays Guitar Hero... Legislators

The 3D images in holographic videos are harmful to children who can't tell the difference between it and reality. This immersion means that the programs can actually stimulate the brainwave paterns which are also seen in serial homicide murder killers.

In addition, the CIA is currently looking into reports that Mu Staffa cells are using holographic images to practive terroristic fear threats.

Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm

Matthew Wilsonthe sad thing is there are trolls on both sides of this. people need to stop acting like their side is so pure.10/18/2014 - 12:19pm
MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
Matthew Wilsonwhile he focused on gg, he did call out both sides crap.10/17/2014 - 7:18pm
