Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

February 7, 2009 -

The Entertainment Software Association banned booth babes from E3 in 2006, but they may be returning to the game industry's big dance in 2009 as the ESA seeks to restore the expo's former glory.

In an interview with Danny Pena of GamerTag Radio, ESA exec Rich Taylor alludes to - but doesn't quite confirm - that booth babes will make a comeback.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

i see nothin wrong with booth babes as long as they make it equal if ur gonna have hot girls have some hot guys there also its all about equality

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Equality doesn't sell anything(games) included. It's the demographics, your core audience, that dictates what sells. If you had an equal amount of "booth dudes" at a convention, whether it's E3, or Comic-Con, you would turn off the majority of patrons who go to those conventions. That includes the female attendees as well. If you look at the photos from Comic-Con or other conventioons, you'll see most of the photos of attendees with "booth babes" and not with "booth dudes",of which they're few. The patrons, whether female/male, would rather have their picture taken with a hot chick. The funny thing is the female attendees were quite "happy" to have their pictures taken with some of those models, and judging by the models I can't blame them.

A scantily clad "booth dude" would turn off most patrons, the males for obvious reasons, and the females, who would be feel threatened by them. Men are admired for their strength, by females, and by males because of some kind of "pack leader" mentality, alpha male thing. The women are admired for their feminity, beauty, by both males & females, and aren't considered threatening. That's why you have beautiful women sell everything from magazines, including women's mags, cars, shampoo.. to even videogames. That's the way it is. Don't like it, take it up with Mother Nature. This is the way Humans are wired. If you had the "equality" you're asking for in terms of booth models, you would have a real revolt from just about everyone. If you look at the games conventions in Europe, Japan or just about anywhere else in the world, you'll find..you guessed it scantily clad "booth babes". Even if they weren't "scantily clad" they would still be popular with the masses, and they help sell the products. Everyone in advertising knows this. Beautiful women sell products. They always will.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Fun Time!  Which characters would you like to see represented by a beautiful booth babe?

The Witchdoctor from Diablo III.

Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

No, lack of people who can adequately report news should it actually occer is what's ruining E3. Seriously, 99% of the reporters sent to E3 by gaming sites are fucking amatures. I used to get all my news from random youtube videos made by regular people. At least they would show the damn games being played, instead of speculating about them or talking about some kind of... crap. Fuck, I still don't know how so many reporters manage to cock such an easy task up so badly, especially when the untrained public seems to be so good at it. It boggles the mind. Seriously, just send in a bunch of kids with video cameras and let them run wild. They'll provide all the information we need.

What's even worse is that it was mostly reporters who complained about the lack of substance in E3. Have you fuckers even looked at the videos you make? They usually start off with a comercial, then a 30 second long cliche intro, then I get to hear your uninformed ass tell me things about the game that don't really matter, or that I would see in the video. But then the actuall video is a compilation of the exact same stuff I've already seen on other sites, half assedly pasted together, and with a stupid voiceover running all through it.

The first year of the new E3 was such a huge dissapointment for me. I was expecting it to be awesome, as they did away with the useless stuff (anyone else remember what the debut for True Crimes: Streets of New York was) and had an emphasis on substancial information. Little did I know that only a small fraction of that information would reach me due to the incompetence and lazyness of the "professional" reporters.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

I would be more interested in better manigment and placement of booths and consumer access than booth babes.
But booth babes are part of the experience of a grand trade show look at cars for example, pluses sex sales and it creates a market for models and woman looking to model themselfs.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

I'm going to be a maverick in this thread and say I welcome the return of booth babes.  There's nothing wrong with a little fanservice and fun at the trade show.  The problem with E3 was that they forgot about "moderation."  They just kept pushing the budgets and the flash and the music to higher and higher levels, until they drowned out the games themselves.  But the last E3s were tedius and boring.  There has to be a middle ground.  Some fun, but not out of control.

Good god, it's not huge deal to pay a girl a few hundred dollars for the weekend to stand around in costume and pose for pictures.  It's not even that sexist.  Feel free to have Master Chief and Kratos walking around as well.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

I must admit, while I don't usually go in for chicks strutting around advertising cars or other big ticket items, for some reason booth babes and videogames go well together.  Maybe it's the hormone-crazed 15 year-old geek in me, but I welcome the booth babes.  Anyway, somehow I doubt the booth babes are charging an arm and a leg to do their thing at E3 - models don't get anywhere near the sort of money that NFL folks command from the videogame industry, so I say as long as the industry is paying millions for sports stars what's the harm in a few hundred for the odd booth babe?

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Booth babes: when you're not quite pretty enough to do real modeling.

The return of video game booth babes is just evidence of how sad the games industry consumer is.

That may be offensive to a lot of people out there, but as an industry professional I am offended by this insistence that we pander to immature attitudes and the stereotype that gamers are horny, emotional retards that can't do any better than going to E3 to stand three feet from their favorite game developers booth "babe".

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Oh come on!  I for one welcome the booth babes.  It gives me an excuse to let out the immature horny emotional retard that I keep bottled up for the rest of the year.  I have to give the mindless little pervert a taste of freedom every once in a while.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Booth babes help promote the stereotype of gamers and that many of the visiters will be easier swayed by the presence of them. Unfortunately games companies haven't got over this idea of using sizeable breasts to promote games.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Like hayabusa75 said, booth babes promote MALE stereotypes, not gamer stereotypes.

Booth babes also appear in some hot rod and import car shows. Does that mean they also appeal to car nut stereotypes? Nope. Car modding and gaming are still mostly male-dominated activities, therefore these models are popular in such venues.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

I'm not really happy about them coming back.  I have nothing against them personally, but I wish the game companies would spend that money on the games.  With the amount paid for booth babes, they could hire another game tester or numerous other things, which I think would do much more to improve the quality of a game.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

We tried that but everyone complained and cried that e3  wasn't fun enough. So now we have to go back to wasting our time making pointless demos and wasting money on pointless boothes instead of getting our games out.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

TK, your words are awefully harsh.

There's nothing wrong with a massive event that goes over the top, thats what the video game industry is about anyway.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

E3 is supposed to be about the games, not some dumbass hired bitches promoting games and companies they don't know anything about. If you want random whores, go to the closest street corner.

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Somebody needs to cut back on the gangsta rap.

All other things equal, I'd be more likely to check out a booth with a hot chick than one without.  I don't think doing so reinforces any gamer stereotypes.  Maybe guy stereotypes, but not gamer ones.

Then don't buy the games they are advertising, maybe they will realize hiring them isn't worth the money...  or is it?

Re: Are Booth Babes Returning to E3?

Ah, yes, the so-called "dumbass" "bitches" promoting games.

I remember the last one I met. A university student studying accountancy. Seriously, accountancy? How dumb can you get?

Not to mention the Electrical Engineering student I met as well. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Everyone knows Electrical Engineering is the EASIEST course in Uni'.

Seriously though, jokes aside, who gives a damn if there are booth babes or not? They're easily ignored if you're really that disturbed by their presence.

TechnogeekIf the developer were male there wouldn't have been a "conversation" in the first place.10/19/2014 - 2:27am
Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm

MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
