Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
Glad to see more than "lol hand-eye coordination" on this list.
You can have the fastest reflexes in the world, but if you're a dumbass you will not beat a moderately difficult RPG boss, set records in racing games, string together combos in fighters, S++ a stage in Ikaruga, or survive instant-drop speeds in Tetris.
EXCELLENT - but...let's go better next time

Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
What about games teaching me to fire guns with pinpoint accuracy? What? They don't do that? But Jack Thompson said they did. What? He LIED?!
Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
This list is horrible. There are about four things listed mulitple times: Hand-eye coordination and visual acuity, developing empathy in young people and social connections, cognitive health and post traumatic stress therapy.
It's frustrating to see semantic variations of the same concepts being used to buff this list up, but some of these things haven't been proven (empathy development for instance) in the same way that the impact of vioent video games hasn't been proven.
I'm surprised, Edge should know better than to put up meaningless fluff like this.
Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
Actually, for the most part it's not just a semantic differance. Hand-eye cordination is basicly being able to move an object where you want to, while visual acuity is being able to spot details (The pretty twinkling key is one of my favorite examples.) Cognitive health I think is basicly the ability to take infomation and use it to reach a goal(Most RPG's and puzzle games). But I do admit the empathy and connections may be a bit spotty.
Funny thing, they've been saying some of this stuff since the Atari 2600's hayday. Guess it takes some people 30 years to get the message.

Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
It's all about that last one for me. I play games simply because they're fun.
Or because I'm getting paid to write a strategy guide or something.

Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
"Developing empathy in young people"-yep, I can play with little kid every well. Not only that, I get more child development experience just by playing with young kids
.
"Hand-eye coordination"-helps me a lot, but why do I still suck at baseball in real life. I can't get a home run for real
.
"Simulating real experiences"-well GTA did thought me that criminal acts could get you killed. Medal of Honor and Call of Duty taught me how World war 2 was fought .
"Problem Solving"-RPG helps me alot in problem solving. Also Half-Life 2 helps me figure out how to get passed block path. Also some game like My coach and Talkman talk (PSN and PSP exclusive)can teach you foreign languages (if you play World War 2 game, you can learn a bit of German)
"Social connections"-that's why our consoles and computer are made for, not only game but to talk online and meeting one another. Thank you Xbox Live and Playstation Network
.
"Tech Advancements"-Oh yeah, without video game I wouldn't have like the modern-day tech like cell phone, Ipod, Notebook computer, blu-ray disc, and other good techs
.
"funs"-Do I really need to explain that part.
Take that JT, oh and Obama has a Wii. Does that make him another conspiracy??

Last one wins it all, but the seventh one can be taken both ways.
Either way, this is for Jack:

Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
I like that last one...since it's kinda the reason in the first place.
Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
Hmm, funny, I've never seen an anti game activist come up with as many or more reasons to ban games.
They'll just ignore this anyway.
Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
"Understanding how others think"
Yeah, after years of capture the flag in games, people really are predictable during the on campus games of captuer the flag.
Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
I especially like how they listed "Social connections" considering most anti-game activists / media still consider gamers anti-social overweight loosers living in their parents basement.
Re: Report: 15 Benefits of Gaming
Hey, some of us fit that stereotype. We're fat, anti-social basement-dwelling losers and damned proud of it!
Besides, the only people I care about are the two people in my life who think I'm a LOVABLE fat, anti-social basement-dwelling loser. Everyone else can kiss my lard ass.
Actually I'm not that fat, and I don't dwell in a basement - at least not until I finish making the basement into my office. But right now I haven't got around to it - so I guess that makes me a lovable, slightly fat, anti-social, LAZY loser who merely dreams of living in his basement.
