Report: Layoffs Hit G4

February 17, 2009 -

No names yet, but Variety's Ben Fritz is reporting that game-oriented cable station G4TV has been hit by layoffs with the X-Play program hosted by Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb taking the brunt of the cutback.

We'll post more as we learn the details.

UPDATE: Variety has posted details on the layoffs:

G4 is... cutting back its two daily programs, "X-Play" and "Attack of the Show" to three and four original episodes per week, respectively, starting March 2nd... a number of staffers on those two programs have gotten the axe, though the figures for the total network are in the single digit percentage-wise...

Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb will continue to host X-Play in its reduced format.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

One last post for today.  Good shows are like computers;  you watch them, play with them for a while, then 5-10 years down the road, they break and disappear.  I still cannot get over how DOMINATING Microsoft is,  I just hope they don't go into TV; unless it is to help people solve their computer problems....like that would happen.  Theives!  Get into video gaming from Sony's perspective and you will see what I am talking about.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

If you ask me, they should have got rid of Morgan Webb as well. She's become really lame ever since she went and married Rob Reid over two years ago...

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Sadly I was never in an area to get TechTV. I did catch it when I was visiting family and I did enjoy it when i did watch it. G-4 we did get. I gave it a straight 5 hours of trying to give it a chance and all i got was a 'Jesus Christ this sucks" and migraine. Every now and then I will catch X-Play but I hate there ridiculous method of reviewing games that somehow puts all RPGs into the 1 to 3 star category. Maybe I’m one of those old-fashion gamers where the games plot means more to me then the “oh shiny” graphics.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Did anyone not see this all comming ages ago when G4 and tech tv had that "merger" I was like 13 and knew that it was g4 taking over and dragging my favorite newly found channel to shit.

I was like "anime and tech kickass" then I got G4.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

why would i want to watch a TV show about video games? It doesn't make any sense.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I feel so left out, I've never heard of TechTV until I started listening to forum posters complain about G4 ruining techTV.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I refer to G4 as MTV for gamers. It's supposed to be about games, but instead you get idiots hitting each other with 2X4s and trashy reality shows.

It's like 10% games and 90% irrelevant crap. I mean, most of what was axed was useful. What good is knowing about the hottest PC titles when the show that gave you basic tips on building and maintaining PCs is gone. Hell, I learned of Firefox trhough TechTV

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

It was good when it started out. I watched Shows like, Blister (even though I thought Bill Sindelar was a tool) Cheat!, Filter, Judgment Day, Arena, and Cinematech when they were on. Although I couldn't watch it constantly because you started to see the same things repeat over and over, it was good for a Friday afternoon/when I didn't have to worry about school or anything. It was cool for the people who were gamers and knew what they were all talking about going into it. They had to do something to get more viewers. That's where all the crappy shows came from. We might hate reruns of cops and Totally Outrageous Behavior but it gets ratings.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Actually, they don't get ratings.  Hence the need for layoffs.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Ms. Webb stopped doing her website about three weeks ago. She stated that she is moving on to other things. Could it have been a sign???

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Well, if it's X-Play, they can start with getting rid of the useless characters that had stopped being funny long ago: Ratty Hand Puppet, Drunk Link, Canadian Guy and the Screaming Intern.  They might want to keep Kevin Pereira around as Jack Thompson though, as JT never ceases to be a joke.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

those characters haven't been around in a longass time.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I've never liked G4.  It's one of those channels where it's obvious that they're trying too hard to be cool for a demographic that doesn't exist (i.e. the 15 year-old trendy gamer who's out partying every night).  I mean it's about games folks - it doesn't need to be hip and trendy - gamers don't care for the image thing - that's why we spend so much time eating junk food, staying up until 4am and avoiding sunlight and clean clothes.  Oh, and we're 30+ years old - the teenaged gamer was in a minority TEN YEARS AGO.  So just quit the juvenile crap and tell us about the games.

Oh, and quit hyping everything up the yin yang.  A modicum of criticism wouldn't be amiss.

Maybe if G4 hired Zero Punctuation's Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw to write the script and dropped the pseudo-hip attitude, the channel might be worth watching.  As things stand, I wouldn't miss it if it were gone.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

G4 Is Almost Dead to Me. Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb are its Life support right now. They go, and G4 is Dead. Period. I don't care how many E3 trailers they air.

Fair Warning, the following may induce nostalgia.

Still not happy about my loss of:

Tech Live (Michaela Pereira)

Call for Help (I don't care what any one says, Katt and Pirillo were great. Leo was cool too but I've atleast got him on TWiT and Pirillo is still LockerGnome.)

The Screen Savers (This show was TechTV. Period. Leo, Kevin, Patrick, Morgan, Megan, YOSHI. I mean seriously, who else could could squeeze a PS2, Xbox, and a GameCube into a PC and still have a fully functional PC? James Kim... ... ... John Dvorak, And who could forget Martin Sargeant? And speaking of Martin Sargeant...)

Unscrewed With Martin Sargeant

Extended Play (Shortened, prior to the buyout, to X-Play with something of a G4 induced changed format, but atleast the original premise is still there an Adam gives a good lesson every now and then. Kate was with him for a while, and before her was Lauren, but then came Morgan and I have no complaints. Though I did prefer her on The Screen Savers, I will admit.)

Eye Drops (Probably some of the best Machinima I've ever seen was on this show).

Anime Unleashed (Got me into some pretty decent animes. The random movie wasn't bad either).

And of course this list could go on but where would that get us? Anyway, Nostalgia moment over. Layoffs are never good, as pretty much nearly all of the original TechTV staff knows (Had to get that last shot at G4 / Comcast in). And now, I will step off my platform. Best of luck to all who receive the dreaded Pink Slip.

Oh man, I miss the Screen Savers :(.

I haven't watched G4 in a long time, mainly because it just didn't feel like TechTV anymore. Thanks for the nostalagic memories.

I guess it doesn't matter, I switched to ATT cable and they don't include G4.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Sucks that people are losing their jobs.

Also, it's just like G4 to put the brunt of the layoffs in the last bastion of TechTV on their pitiful channel.

If you go crazy then I will still call you Superman.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I had a week's preview of G4...... not impressed.

I did get a chuckle or two out of Code Monkeys, even thought most of the voice actors sucked.

I am not sure, but wasn't that the same creator of Red vs. Blue? (Awesome, btw!)

Either way, I don't know much, so I may be wrong here....

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Ah, so the only show that I still have some respect for is getting nerfed.  Makes me glad I don't get G4.

Can Webb Alert come back then?

I loved Webb Alert. It was my favorite "catch-up" news podcast. I know Morgan cancelled it because X-Play was picking up and she wouldn't have time, but now that it's returning to the old schedule, will she bring it back?

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I feel bad but at the same time the way G4 tried to add non gaming content to its channel was blatent stupidity.

I mean if it all can't be about video games then maybe one could oh I don't know go back to the roots of the channel by adding technology stuff?

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I remember when the show was called Extended Play on TechTV.  Honestly, the quality really went downhill.  They're a lot more biased now, and they sometimes care more about being "entertaining" than reviewing the games.

But then, I loved TechTV, and hated that it was pretty much destroyed in the merger with G4.  It's like they filtered all the crap from the channel, then kept the crap and threw out everything else.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

There hasn't been a "flappy jaw" in years and only recently have they done any comedy sketches, so your assertion that they care more about being entertaining falls flat.  ever since the new format XPlay has been more of a gaming news show, now they only do one maybe two reveiws per episode

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

X-Play is one of the few game related shows the G4 got (last time I checked,G4 was a gaming channel) I wish Lab with Leo wasn't cancelled.

Sorry, but I have to go onto my little soapbox.

Why when G4 merged with TechTV, you cancelled most of the TechTV shows? That kind of defeats the purpose of merging. Why did you cancelled all the good shows like The Screen Savers, Icons, Tech Live, Call For Help, etc.

What's with AOTS. At first, it was exactly like The Screen Savers, but you made it into the internet on TV. If we want the internet, we go onto the internet. It also has some of the worse skits ever. Talking pants? Oh come on. The only good part is the Loop, which show be made into a full show.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Simple answer:  The merger was to extend the reach of G4.  By absorbing Tech TV, G4 managed to double the number of homes it could reach, which helps increase cash flow.

Sadly, it appears they weren't particularly interested in the programming.  I miss Tech TV :(

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I feel nothing but contempt for G4 after what they did to TechTV.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Seconded. The channel has just gotten exponetially worse ever since. Even x-play and AOTS aren't worth watching IMO.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Amen.  TechTV was great.  G4...eh, not so much.

Sessler's okay...saw him outside a San Francisco Mission District bar one night and overheard him slurring to some friends.  He seems like an okay guy.  I love the way he takes gaming oponents *cough* Jackieboy *cough*  to task

Not too fond of Webb though.  Not an impressive presenter.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

One thing I forgot to mention; Does anyone remember CNet TV?  That was a great show for anyone who was into computers and gaming, and which was the best buy as far as what computer should you get or what is a great app for your computer.  I am afraid everything that we care about as far as media and the same goes for newspapers...is all going to be online.  Thats tough &(%! for anyone who does not own a computer

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

G4 is a toilet of a channel anyway.

And that's an oh so wise idea, take a channel where very little is video game related and make it even less video game related, brilliant /sarcams

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Same with MTV in the late 80's; got rid of the older VJ's and some styles of music and in the mid 90's added cartoons young adults would find funny like Bevis and Butthead and Daria.  Then by he end of the mid 90's, MTV had gottten rid of most of its music.  So I understand where you are coming from.  The Station heads take a good channel and pimp it out soo much that the original fans of that channel don't recognize it anymore.  Sadly, junk like this is happening EVERYWHERE in the industry, if you think about it.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

Code Monkeys, AOTS, and Ninja Warrior are good.
X-Play, and Wired for Sex are okay.
The rest sucks.
Arena, Icons and Cheat were good as well as other shows I dont remember the names of.

Adam is almost 40 and needs to find something else to do, sorry.  Seems like a good guy, but you have to fact the fact some time and go into behind the scenes or go somewhere else some time.

Adam and Olivia are awesome. Tina Wood was awesome too, but she is working for Microsoft now.  The girl that hosted Cheat! is hot as hell too.  I am not sure if I cared for her reporting style, but I could handle it as long as they showed her on screen every now and then.  Morgan I am not sure I like the personality of as much, but hey.

Tech and G4 had too many decent things to have gotten shaken down to the crap they have now.  Seriously, only one show I watch, and 2 more that are only one here and there.  Code Monkeys is starting to look like it may not return too...  Still waiting for a contract renew...

All in all, we will see how it goes, but their site isn't that great either...  There just seems to be bad choices made in regards to the channel over the years and the website.  I don't get why they do half of the stuff they do, and WTF was up with hurl?  Who think's that is a great show idea?  I'll go to college humor and other like sites for that, not watch it on TV.

Re: Report: Layoffs Hit G4

I doubt it'll be any of the presenters. They're too valuable, and one of the very few things worth watching on G4 (well, FuelTV has the rights to XPlay and AOTS here). I'm thinking behind-the-curtain staff members.

Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
