Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

February 21, 2009 -

Government censors in Singapore have cleared Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned, despite the game's well-publicized snippet of male nudity.

The Straits Times reports that Singapore's Media Development Authority reviewed the game:

Mr Ernest Khoo, head of video games and media content at MDA, said that whether full-frontal male nudity is allowed depends on the context in which it occurs.

In this expansion pack, he said, the depiction is 'non-sexual and can hence fall within the M18 rating', which is also the rating given to the original GTA IV. He added that with the M18 rating, only those 18 years old and above will be buying the game and its expansion pack.

Going by the video game classification system MDA introduced last year, games for online download do not need to be sent for classification before sale here.

Okaying GTA IV L&D is another indication that Singapore has loosened its approach to game content since briefly banning Mass Effect in 2007.

Good news for Rockstar, and freedom of speech in video games.

I think if the expansion pack was sold it stores it would cause a lot more controversy. With the exception of Xbox Live MS point cards, people need credit cards to buy this add on, and that means asking an adult or having your own (Which means you are 18 years old anyway...[Most of the time anyway]).

This is Singapore, where chewing gum is illegal. Could one really expect any less from the place?

Boobs clear, but female nipples don't.

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

*gasp* Those bastards!

[/sarcasm]

TBH, it's no surprise. Trust them not to get all butthurt over a naked guy, since they obviously think guys won't fap to it (obviously oblivious to the gay part of the male population), but to demand the game pulled or edited when it's a girl being shown in full glory.

*EPIC FACEPALM*

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

I seem to be saying this a lot these days, but what are you talking about?  It has nothing to do with whether guys find it appealing.  It's all about the context of the situation.  The male nudity in GTA IV isn't part of a sex scene...the partial nudity in Mass Effect was, so it got banned.  Even then, they reversed their decision after the BFC reviewed it.

Try reading the articles through next time instead of rushing just so you can post another facepalm.

I think that was the most retarded thing you have ever said. Also, stop doing Facepalm, it's annoying.

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

I don't get why people are complaining. It's not like male gamers haven't seen a dick before. Hell, even the female gamers probably had a few inside them.

When Jack Thompson runs his mouth, does anyone really care what he has to say anymore?

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

They better have, or at least be at that age to play this game.

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

Score one for free speech!

Even if it's horrible congressman genitals.... O.O

If you go crazy then I will still call you Superman.

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

You know.....  Mostly guys play the GTA games, yeah?  So I don't really think it matters if they see something they see multiple times a day on themselves anyway.

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

I don't know what you're talking about. I hadn't seen mine in years. *rimshot*

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

Less hamburgers, more physical activity

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

Good to see it released uncensored. :)

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

"He added that with the M18 rating, only those 18 years old and above will be buying the game and expansion pack." it would seem singapore is more level headed than the states ;)

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

I agree good to know that there is someone out there whose head is not surgicaly inserted in their ass.

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

There are very few countries nowadays that are NOT more level headed than the states. Hell even South Africa allows same sex marriage.

Re: Singapore Okays GTA IV Expansion's Full Frontal

Nice. ^_^ Guess they're less crazy than all those watchgroups around the US.

Andrew EisenNeither eShop charges sales tax either. At least in California.09/23/2014 - 2:00pm
Andrew EisenBoth Wii U and 3DS eShops allow you to add funds in the exact amount of whatever's in your shopping cart. If your game is $39.99, you can add exactly $39.99.09/23/2014 - 1:57pm
Infophile@Matthew Wilson: As I understand it, any regulations to force tax online would also set up an easy database for these stores to use, minimizing overhead.09/23/2014 - 1:30pm
MonteReally, the eshop just does next to nothing to make buying digitally advantagous for the customer. Its nice to have the game on my 3DS, but i can get more for less buying a physical copy at retail. And that's not even counting buying used09/23/2014 - 1:18pm
MonteIanC, The Eshop wallet system only lets you add funds in set denominations and the tax makes sure you no longer have round numbers so you ALWAYS loose money. A $39.99 game for instance requires you to add $50 instead of just $4009/23/2014 - 1:13pm
Matthew Wilsonbut thats just it those sites, even the small ones, sell all over the country.09/23/2014 - 11:12am
Neenekoeither that or it would follow the car model of today. big ticket items are taxed according to your residence, not where you buy them.09/23/2014 - 11:07am
NeenekoI doubt it would be the retailer that handles the tax in the first place. If it goes through it would probably be folded in as a service on the processor end or via 'turbotax' style applications.09/23/2014 - 11:05am
Matthew Wilsonsimple there are over 10k tax areas in the us for sales tax. it would be impossible for small online retailers to handle that.09/23/2014 - 10:55am
IanCWhats wrong with charging tax in an online shop?09/23/2014 - 10:47am
E. Zachary KnightI don't see why it would be that difficult to maintain one. Especially for a news outlet with multiple people on the payroll.09/23/2014 - 9:37am
Matthew Wilsonthey can, but will they? more inportantly will the traditional sites be willing to do the extra work to maintain the list?09/23/2014 - 9:02am
E. Zachary KnightSo how will it reduce the power of the traditional games press? They can create curated stores too.09/23/2014 - 8:39am
Matthew WilsonI think its a good thing, but it does mean traditional games press will have less power than ever before. To be fair most of the gaming press were never big on pc gaming anyways.09/23/2014 - 8:33am
E. Zachary KnightMatthew, is that a bad or good thing?09/23/2014 - 7:43am

prh99Steam has added a curator system. You can follow your favorites and see their recommendations http://store.steampowered.com/curators/09/22/2014 - 9:07pm
MaskedPixelantePlus there's the whole "we don't use accounts" thing that means if you lose your 3DS and have to get a new one, you have to deal with Nintendo customer service to get your downloads back instead of, you know, logging in and downloading them.09/22/2014 - 8:39pm
MonteIndeed. Their wallet system, the lack of sales, applying tax, the lack of price cuts, the eshop is pretty terrible. Only use it for indie games.09/22/2014 - 8:29pm
