Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent Video Games

March 22, 2009 -

The head of Germany's police union in the state of Hesse has called for a ban on violent video games in the wake of a horrific school shooting earlier this month.

Echo Online cites comments made by Heini Schmitt, head of the Hessen German Police Union (DPolG):

It is known that in every situation in which a violent rampage (Amoklauf) has occurred, the perpetrator has had a remarked addiction to so-called killergames. The manner of the deed is astonishingly similar to virtual examples.

For him, the fact that roughly a third of children and youths "regularly and addictively escape into a virtual world" sets off alarm bells. Age restrictions for such games are often ignored.  There is admittedly no proof "that these frequent escapes into virtual killerworlds can contribute to such insane deeds", said Schmitt, "But neither can the role killergames be completely dismissed."

When a chance to remove a probable cause exists, it must be used, insisted the chief of the national police union. "The world would be no poorer if there were no more killergames."

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

The usual counterargument:

What was the cause of violence BEFORE video/computer games came along?

Violent music?

Violent movies?

And before that?  What?

Humans are violent beings.  Doesn't mean it's right.  Just means we'll be violent no matter what.

Violent books and dances.

Yes, both have been blamed in the past for "senseless aggression".

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Violent religion?

Actually, that would be different, because there HAS been many deaths related to religion over the course of human history. Not that religion is violent, absolutely not, but some people just go crazy over stupid stuff...

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Correlation, causation, and statistical significance: You're doing it wrong.

It is known that in every situation in which a violent rampage has occurred, the perpetrator was human. There is admittedly no proof that being human contributes to violent acts, but given the history of war and suffering the role of humanity cannot be completely dismissed.

Ban humans.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Amen to that! I think that was Hitler's plan.

Hitler felt the same way about movies and books as this guy does against games. If they didn't conform to his vision of the world, burn 'em.

We already saw game burnings IN AMERICA, so why shouldn't Germany follow suit?

Peace through elimination of media that contradicts my views. Peace through world domination. Peace through absolute control.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

''The manner of the deed is astonishingly similar to virtual examples.''

Kind of a captain obvious statement. Games that use guns are similar (at least in the respect that you point it at your target and fire). What else would they do? have an AK47 but have the player eat it and crap it at his enemies?. ITs hardly anything that isnt already common knowledge. And as for detailed similarities beyond 'point and fire' there are NONE.

Similarities:

 - point in direction of target and shoot

Differences -

No crosshair floating inthe air.

No autoaim.

no auto reload.

No magic 'no recoil' guns.

No mouse to aim with.

No ammo counter.

No heat.

No weight.

No need to adjust for wind etc.

yes.. startlingly similar.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

(warning watch out for flying sarcasim)

You see it would be startling similar to the Call of Duty games...no actually F.E.A.R! Ummm....perhaps Soldier of Fortune? Oh lets go classic and blame Half Life and Counterstrike!

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Grand Theft Auto IV sold about 11M copies.  If these games MAGICALLY turn normal people into killers, where are the bodies?  If even 1% of the players of GTA4 became killers, then where are the 110,000 murder sprees?  And GTA is just one of many violent games.

If what these insane, sissy, jackasses are saying is true, we would be up to our eyeballs in corpses.

We are seeing the next phase of Germany's panty-waste fear of videogames.  Stores are already refusing to sell what games are even allowed to be sold there.  A total ban on adult games will be implemented soon- all the bones are in place.  Of course, this won't do anything to prevent crazy people from going on rampages.

I believe this is going to happen, and in time other (so-called "free society") governments with clueless pols are going to ban games- The UK and Austrailia are likely candidates.

US anti-games moralists & nanny staters are going to be very excited about these developments and try their damndest to do it in the States. This is the beginning of a very bad chain reaction.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

A ban on violent games in Germany equates to the UK receiving a ban on violent games too? I fail to see the logic. Paranonia? Of course. It should also be remembered to the UK has had less games censored than the US (therefore that would lead me to believe that the US would be more likely to crackdown on the games than the UK, even though the possibility of such event happening is low, but regardless they would rather see a ban on violent games than a ban on a real cause; ease of access to guns).

Instead of these attempts to make the UK apparently seem very conservative over the issue (for some unknown reason) we should actually look at real impact here and what effect it would have on the Pan-European age certification process (PEGI), because no doubt if the EU got its way and every country had to adopt it what pressure would be put on the system from Germany?

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Maybe he's refering to that one adventure game, Fahrenheit or something, which had a sex scene in the UK version that was removed from the US version. There may have been other similar cases.

On the other hand, the UK versions of Fallout 1 and 2 had the children removed, compared to the US version, so it's not like the UK doesn't sometimes get censored games as well. I'm not sure if they are any good statistics regarding it.

I think that very few games in either the UK or the US are actually censored... not counting stuff that occurs while the games are still in development, and thus effects every region. (For example, practically no game will depict the killing of children anymore, so when it comes to the "do everything" style of games, some games will make them invincible, and others games just don't include them at all.)

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Teenage mutant 'hero' turtles,  the UK removed the word ninja for fear that just hearing the word ninja would have people out whittling nunchuks and folding metal for their swords.  Guess it worked because there is no knife violence at all in the UK now due to that name change many years ago, another victory for censorship.

In fact can any country at all give an example of censorship working to curtail one of societies ills.  So here we have people wanting to ban games under the banner, may cause serial killer tendencies, when i haven't seen any solid proof that censorship has ever succesfully righted wrongs or stopped any misdeed occuring at all, as they claim it does.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Fahrenheit (whose titled had to be changed to Indigo Prophecy for the US) is one example, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is another, GTA: SA Hot Coffee is another.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Agreed. Aside from the occassional AO, which isn't even -technically- censorship *note: I still don't support the way they are handled, but yeah* there isn't any real censorship that is forced per say.

Here in the States, a company may take out stuff, under free choice, to go for a lower rating, but in some places in Europe (like Germany), I'd imagine for some games, it is a requirement or get banned. And that IS censorship.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

So playing Farcry 2 on one occasion constitutes an addiction to violent video games now? And despite admitting to having no evidence to support a link between said addiction and violent behavior, this guy says we should ban games just because, hey, it can't hurt, right?

While we're at it, let's start banning films and books too. No possible harm could come from that. Let's just ban it all; nobody really NEEDS art, entertainment, and culture.

And here I thought we Americans had a monopoly on stupid.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

From the sounds of it, there was some speculation whether the German media made up that supposed link between the killer and Farcry 2. Wouldn't surprise me if that was completely fabricated.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

To be honest, I'd be surprised if it wasn't fabricated. These are the media we're talking about. They're not as extreme in europe as they are in the US, but scaremongering is still the #1 tactic to get more viewers. They know teenagers don't watch the news, but older people do and those are afraid of newer technology that they don't fully understand. Blaming it on a game rather than the psychological problems the boy was having is so much easier. Society can't be at fault, so they find a convenient scapegoat, games just happen to be it.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent Video

Ah ignorance is rising to a new level in Germany...ugh...

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

I'm curious, if a country actually manages to ban "M" rated games, what's their scapegoat going to be when violence continues to be a  problem?

"I'd far rather be happy than right any day."

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Let see what else is also popular in Germany.

Manga/anime is like a big pop culture in Germany.  Maybe they're put the blame on for school shooting when there is no more video game.

If a school shooting happen and the shooter doesn't have any video game, but a manga/anime, they'll blame Battle Royale.

A serial killer in Germany killing people, you can always blame Higarushi No Naku Koro Ni.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

T-rated games would be found to gory and violent and banned next, what else. Once you take the steps needed to ban one range you might aswell ban them all, which is what I suspect will happen if the german politicians can't get their heads of out their voters asses and think for a change rather seizing the spotlight to grab some votes.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Scary...no logic...no honor...no freedom...

Even though there's no evidence, video must cause these killings.

People never pay attention to ratings.

EVERY shooting is committed by gamers.

This is the worst I've heard from someone other than JT. Sad.

Maybe not democracy, per se, but some choice in the matter will be limited.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent Video

This is what I'm taught as a typical mistake made by people.

The chance on B given A is assumed to be the same as the chance on A given B. In other words, P(Games given Shooter) is assumed to be the same as the chance P(Shooter given Games), even though he admits P(Games) is over 1/3 (most likely more at 4/5 or higher, and this shooter only got addicted in the last few months, which most likely was due to getting turned down or something) and P(Shooter) is quite low.

Probable cause? Bullshit. Learn math first, then shoot your mouth off.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent Video

I love how he says the world wouldn't be poorer for the lack of violent games. Yet does he say the same about movies, music, books?

The world wouldn't be the only thing poorer you clod. Your country would join it when groups like cry tek start pulling out cause of your stupidity.

And actually, the world be "poorer". Never mind the fact that there's no absolute proof whatsoever of "violent" video games being "harmful" to anyone.

Maybe he can explain why every single school in his nation hasn't erupted in a bloodbath then.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent Video

And then maybe he can explain why the shooters in school shootings are usually abused/mollested, mentally ill, or depressed indiviuals and why that fact is down played in the media.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

Wait a tick.  Did he just say "There is no evidence that games are a contributing factor" followed by "One cannot deny that games are a contributing factor?"  His logic is self destroying!

So basicly what he said is: "Admittedly, even though there is no evidence that ice cream consumption in the summer causes shark attacks one cannot deny that ice cream causes shark attacks"

How can he even say "no one can deny?"  The lack of evidence is the very REASON someone denies something.  That is what denial is.

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

I wonder what games Hitler, Jack the Ripper, et al, played in their days...

Counter-Strike the board game?

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

yep, he did play Counterstrike. (more sarcasm and satire below)

A little quote I put at Kotaku:

"Also because Hitler was a big fan of Command & Conquer series. oh and also the serial killers like Jürgen Bartsch (killed 4 children since 1961 until 1979 where he was executed) was a big fan of Manhunt, and Karl Denke (who suicided in 1924 in a jail cell) who ate 40 people because he played Cooking Mama and Manhunt."

Let see our serial killers who played video game:

Dennis Rader aka The BTK killer-Manhunt, Postal

David Berkowitz aka Son of Sam-Grand Theft Auto series

Albert DeSalvo aka The Boston Strangler-Grand Theft Auto, and Manhunt

Even our history most famous dictators played video game:

Vladimir Lenin-Command & Conquer (that's why Lenin resemble Kane)

Joseph Stalin-Command & Conquer: Red Alert series ( Stalin's real name Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili, he just took the name and the look because he played too much of that game)

Mao Zedong, Ho Chi Minh, and Kim Il Sung-Command & Conquer (all of them), and Endwar

you want to know why Hitler was a backstabber and invade the Soviet Union.  It was because Stalin beat Hitler online when they both play Counterstrike and Hitler was pissed and he decided to make Command & Conquer look real.  It was said that Hitler favorite music was the Hell March from Red Alert.

(End Sarcasm)

Re: Head of German Police Union Calls For Ban on Violent ...

I think there is a mistranslation up there which would explain it. What he realy said was 'HEIL HITLER' and then some garbage about violent video games being tools of the jew.
