Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Abe Lincoln may have been great American leaders. But whose faces would appear on the side of Mt. Rushmore if it was being built today?
To make things even more theoretical, what if the mountainside's chiseled countenances were those of video game characters?
Pwn or Die explores the issue and replaces the four presidents with Master Chief, Mario, Lara Croft and Sonic.
Interesting, but does Pwn or Die miss the point of Mt. Rushmore? The towering South Dakota sculpture is the quintessential American monument. No disrespect, but do Mario and Sonic, the products of iconic Japanese game companies, belong there? Ditto for Lara Croft, a monied Englishwoman.
To put it another way, would you drape a Homer Simpson banner on the Eiffel Tower?
With that in mind, what American characters - or, at least, characters from American companies - would you select? Drop us a comment with your picks.

Didn't they outsource production of the Tomb Raider series to an American company?
---You are likely to be eaten by a Grue.
That makes Lara an economic migrant, and therefore not constitutionally allowed to be president/have her face on Mt. Rushmore.
Not sure Master Chief would be considered a gaming leader... thats just me though as Halo was an okay game but not genre changing.
Also where are the older games.. Pac-Man or Ms Pac-Man should be on there.

Yeah, but Halo brought FPS's into the mainstream more readily than some other games (I say that because GoldenEye kicked major ass) and pushed the Xbox into the market as a successful console.
"HEY! LISTEN!"
I have to agree. Halo might not have been the greatest game ever made, but you could also say that the four presidents on Rushmore weren't the best presidents that ever were. What puts them up there is their overall impact on society, and Halo's has been huge.
I don't like it, just like I don't like it that despite the fact that the Half-Life games were vastly superior to anything Duke Nukem, I'd have to give Nukem my vote over Gordon Freeman as the more iconic and impactful character.
Additionally: Solid Snake, Pacman, and Ken or Guile.
In a pinch I might say Kratos. He may not be American, but he's part of the culture that founded Western Civilization and he'd totally be an American marine if he lived today.
If you seriously wanted to portray Duke Nukem's impact on society... you would just need to make a statue of him stealing one liners from Bruce Campbell and Rowdy Roddy Piper (for those lost on this, watch Army of Darkness and They Live). I won't deny that DN 3D was a fave of mine growing up though... just would have been nice to see a lead character who didn't belong in Bad Dudes. (The president has been kidnapped by ninjas!!!)

Gordon Freeman, Mario, Snake and Chief.
All 4 consoles, all 4 console mascots. Everyones a winner baby that's for sure!
I would like to see "WWII Grunt" up there
>To put it another way, would you drape a Homer Simpson banner on the Eiffel Tower?
Yes, it'd add a little culture to the place. ;P
/b
Sgt. A.J. Johnson (Born in Chicago), Gordon Freeman (Lived in Arizona, must assume he's American, to take Roosevelt's place), Three-Dog (likely born in the Pitt), and Sonya Blade. :D
I vote Gordon Freeman, Ms. Pac Man, Guybrush Threepwood, and John Madden.
Not an easy one there, Dennis.
After all, your requirements seem to be that they not only be American now, but were created American.
Mario, for example, you crossed out.

Just off the top of my head, so I might be wrong, but wasn't Kratos from the God of War series created by an American studio?
but kratos is greek
Correction- his background is greek. He was concieved here. :D
To put it another way, would you drape a Homer Simpson banner on the Eiffel Tower?
No, I'd drape a Shredder banner on the Eiffel Tower to kick off a new order.
But seriously, why would I care for a VG Mt Rushmore?
What is a game?(throws wine glass on the floor and it breaks to pieces) A miserable little pile of secrets.
Isn't Master Chief american?

no disrespect, but the point of Pwn or Die wasnt to replace Mt. Rushmore to but have a Mt. Rushmore type monument for the video game world in honor of the great (people?) that paved the way. Are you upset that some group of people used mt. rushmore as a basis for a piece of art? (i assume a picture is art)
PS. according to wikipeda, pacman is japanese not american
I was going to say the same thing. GP is the one missing the point of the exercise. Not to mention the fact that Master Chief is an American created character.
That said, I more or less agree with their picks, though I think I would have swapped Sonic for Pac-Man.
Lara Croft's chest should not be included. If they want a female, there's one clear choice: Samus Aran, the First Lady of Gaming.
When Jack Thompson runs his mouth, does anyone really care what he has to say anymore?
"If they want a female, there's one clear choice: Samus Aran, the First Lady of Gaming."
Seconded.
Is it possible to "third" a motion... cause if so, it's totally "thirded"...
If not I simply concur...

Gaming is a hobby the whole world enjoys - no need to limit it just the the US of A :)
But I'm not feeling the selection here. Mario and Sonic, sure. Lara, I can see it. Master Chief? Eh, not really. How about Gordon Freeman instead?
Freeman, while completely awesome in every way, has not had the social impact that the Master Chief has.

Watch your tone, young man
Gordon was killing headcrabs before Master Chief was even a figment of Bungie's imagination
Mt. Rushmore is a shame. I'm certian George Washington would have seen it as the government flexing its muscle through the pointless defacing of natural geologica features.
A more realistic portrayal of Washington would have been to say he would't have had time to be outraged by Mount Rushmore, as he would be too busy wondering why the hell he was still alive.
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" - Benjamin Franklin
Gordon Freeman should get on instead of a hedgehog (I mean, humanity is more important than citizenship, right?).
Mt. Rushmore is a symbol of America. A Mt. Rushmore of video games would not be tied to America, but would be a monument of video games themselves.
Come to think of it, Master Chief was not born on Earth, but on one of the colonies (Eridanus 2) of the United Nations. He wouldn't qualify, not unless it was the nationality of the developers that counted, in which case they should be the ones on the monument.
Now THAT is a good argument...
but one could also argue that he was from a UNSC colony, which was pretty much the the environmentally body of the whole of Earth... therefore national boundaries wouldn't have mattered. The fact that he was human and lived in a territory controlled by the same body as the continental US would qualify him. (Besides, doesn't stopping the eradication of all life in the universe give him a pretty good qualification?)

A pong paddle, the spaceship from asteroids, the space marine from doom, and the prince from prince of persia.
Augh... you beat me to it. I was thinking about this on the way to work, and the original Prince of Persia needs to be up there.
I vote for Claude or CJ from the GTA series. Not because their American, but because they did a lot more in bringing video games to the mainstream than Master Chief could ever hope to do.
My Mount Rushmore of Video Games:
Will Wright (The Sims, Sim City, Sim Earth)
Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Pikmin, basically all of Nintendo)
John Carmack (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, 3D graphics)
Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy)
So, I have simulation, platformers (among others), FPS, and RPGs covered. Any suggestions or edits?
If we're going to go with developers, I vote for:
Will Wright (The Sims, Sim[anything], Spore)
Richard Garriott (Ultima Series)
Sid Meier (Civilization Series, Alpha Centauri)
[As far as American Developers go, I can't think of a fourth so] Shigeru Miyamoto (Most of the good stuff to come out of Nintendo)
______________
Ben "Scorp" Stanton
Mine would be:
Garrett (Thief series)
Tommy Vercetti (GTA Vice City)
BJ Blaskowitz (Wolfenstein)
Master Chief (Halo)
I honestly dont see why there is so much against Master Chief being on the monument. He is the face of the Xbox/Xbox 360 and the first Halo set the bar for other FPS games.
Replace Sonic with Snake, and Croft with Samus and Video Game Rushmoore is perfect
note: console FPS, but i feel that goldeneye was the one that set the way for console FPSes
Companies: Bungie, Atari, ID
Characters: Master Chief

When it comes to characters that originated in America? How come nobody has said this?
Duke Nukem! Always bet on the Duke!
...
Of course, the fact that his face would take forever to complete (with the only deadline being "when it's done"), it would be a long time before we see any actual progress.
--- I do more than just play games. I draw, too: http://www.silvermelee.deviantart.com
Pong Paddle?
Just as long as we all agree that Gex has no place on this monument.

George Washington wasn't born in the US. He was born in the British Colonies.
You take that back! I will not have you distorting perception with truth!
I'm actually surprised the choices made are being disputed. Not that people don't have their own favs. But america versus everyone else just because Mt. Rushmore was used as a basis for the comparison?
Gaming is not an area specific phenomena. If it wasn't for japanese characters like mario videogames might not have taken off as well as they did in the U.S. I doubt we would be void of them, but it's tough to judge.
Really I think the least of our concerns in this kind of discussion should be country of origin. A better barometer for which game characters should be recognized in a Mt. Rushmore style display of videogames would be which characters brought the most to the medium. I think the original four choices are good ones.
Basically I'm saying rather then considering the real world countries these fake characters come from, why not just consider all characters part of the United States of Videogames. Leave the real world connotations out of it.
I dunno. Master Chief is technically an intergalactic space he- whoops, SAVIOUR, but I suppose he could stay on there for as long as he'd like. I'd add Gordon Freeman from Half-Life and Claude from GTA 3, personally. Then I'd add Chris from Resident Evil on there just for the hell of it. After all, I think that out of the four of them, Chris would be the most capable of punching faces onto the side of a giant boulder.
