Although Judith Krug's name may not be a familiar one to gamers, she was well-known - and highly-regarded - by those on the front lines of the battle against censorship of games and other forms of media.
Krug, 69, who died on Saturday, is best known as the founder of Banned Books Week. The annual event celebrates the freedom to choose what one reads. She was the Executive Director of the Freedom to Read Foundation and Director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association.
Jennifer Mercurio, VP and General Counsel of the Entertainment Consumers Association, commented on Krug's passing:
Judith was instrumental in pushing for First Amendment issues being broadened to include video games.
Sean Bersell, VP of Public Affairs for the Entertainment Merchants Association, added:
Judith was instrumental in the fight against video game censorship. She was a forceful advocate for Media Coalition amicus briefs in the Indianapolis, St. Louis, Illinois, Minnesota, and California video game cases. It would have been easy for the librarians to say, "That's not our battle," but thankfully that wasn't Judith's temperament.
Judith was a fierce believer in the importance of freedom of expression to our culture and our society and was zealous defender of the First Amendment. We all have truly benefited from her passion.
The American Library Association has posted a tribute to Krug.

Lame. :( Someone with more than an ounce of sense on this issue in particular, to be sure. Rest in peace.

When Jack Thompson runs his mouth, does anyone really care what he has to say anymore?
AE: No.
Is this really appropriate?

dude thats not cool at all.

While I personally think this is highly inappropriate, I do have to say that, knowing Jack, it is possible.

This may be the absolutely most idiotic comment I've ever seen on this site. Congratulations.
....Dude. Joke or not, that's just wrong.
He's still probably in the process of writing something along the lines of 'her death is an omen that i was right' or something to that effect, but...
No. Just no. There's a line, and you crossed it.
As Much as I hate Jack Thompson. I don't like that comment you made. It wasn't just appropriate, you're on the same level as him if you start blaming something on a death.
The world including the gaming world lost a person who defended first amendment and fight against people who tried to bend it also. Rest in Peace, o great defender. I wish we could have had her as a good allies.
Rest in peace.
Pass in review. A great loss to be sure.

What a shame, may she rest in peace
Now SHE was an expert in the First Amendment.
Banned Books Week has been one of my many causes that I get behind each year.

People like this are why I think that free speech is something worth fighting for. They could use their influence to fight to oppress us, much like people like Jack Thompson or Rush Limbaugh do, or they could just do nothing, but instead they do everything in their power to create a world where we have the freedom to choose.
Rest well, Mrs. Krug. You will be remembered and honored.
I'm not a Limbaugh listener or fan, but what specific First Amendment right has he ever tried to deny to anybody? Or are you just talking out of your ass?
Think about it: if he managed to silence the other side of the debate, HE WOULD HAVE NO RADIO SHOW. Limbaugh is a beneficiary of the First Amendment. He would have no reason to deny it to others. There's a huge difference between disagreeing with someone and trying to silence them.
Point taken. I was actually thinking of some dumbass pundit, but his name popped into my mind for some reason. I've been reading/watching a lot of political stuff recently and some of the Republican spiel is bringing my piss to a slow boil.
Nevermind that he's generally one for personal responsibility, such as his comments on the V-Tech where he addressed the videogames/guns thing.
She will surely be missed. It's a shame she never got to debate Jack, though. Epic battle of all time.

I have never heard of this woman before, but it sounds like she devoted her life to a great cause. Condolences to her friends, family and colleagues. Rest in peace.
Rest in peace.
As my father once said 'always respect your elders.'
This is true for those who have faught hard so we can have the choise of what games we want to play in this sad cruel world.
She may be gone, but her work carries on. God speed Mrs. Krug.

I have nothing but respect for a judge who's fought censorship as hard as she did. I'd trade JT and the other media whores for her in a heartbeat.
She'll be missed, Dont know who she is;But whatever she's done is heroric.
I hope they'll be more people like her in this country that wont stand for censorship.
I remember her and Banned Book Week. A true patriot who stood up for everyone's right to express themselves.
/salute
A shame we need more sane and un buyable judges...not less....
Gore,Violence,Sexauilty,Fear,Emotion these are but modes of transportation of story and thought, to take them from society you create a society of children and nannys, since adults are not required.
