Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail Flap

April 15, 2009 -

In our previous story GamePolitics broke the news that Utah Senate President Michael Waddoups (R) threatened to have anti-game activist Jack Thompson prosecuted if Thompson did not stop sending him e-mail.

In a remarkable development, a website run by Utah Senate Republicans has publicly taken Thompson to task over the issue:

Jack Thompson sends a lot of Email.

At 6:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday he sent another Email message to a group of contacts and highlighted a picture that, if not legally pornographic, was certainly offensive.

President Waddoups was on the recipient list. He sent a polite but direct request back to Mr. Thompson:

OK, I've had enough. Please remove me from your Email list.

Jack Thompson wrote back:

Sir, did you look at the material being sold to minors in Utah that I sent you?

President Waddoups responded with a second request to be removed:

Yes, I read them all and I got the picture. No more please.

Well . . . a few days went by with no relief. This morning Michael Waddoups – probably a little bugged - sent a third request to be removed from Thompson's Email list...

I asked you before to remove me from your mailing list. I supported your bill but because of the harassment will not again. If I am not removed I will turn you over to the AG for legal action.

So Jack Thompson issued a press release... Jack Thompson might be right. He might be totally, completely, dead-on right on his video game issue. He might not (smart people can disagree). Either way, this behavior doesn't help his cause.

GP: It's not clear who edits the Utah Senate blog, but there is an offer to post the original e-mails if readers request them.

UPDATE: In order to provide some context to this story, in the comments section I've posted the (NSFW) GTA IV screenshot that apparently pushed Sen. Waddoups over the edge. It's clearly not pornographic although it is racy.

UPDATE 2: The Utah Senate Site has posted the series of e-mails between Sen. Waddoups and Thompson.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Oh wow, you're actually at ground zero?  Do you work for the Utah Senate?  It really sounds like this guy has got some kind of impulse control problem.  I wonder if he might actually be a semi-rational guy once on some meds or something.  I don't know how any sane person could think that spamming a legistlative body could advance their cause.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

He's not at ground zero, I assume he's posting comments from the Utah State Senate website.

Actually PHX, could you post a link to that particular page, I couldn't find it.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

He actually is! Hahahahahahahaha! Go there and you will see why I want him back here. He is so fucking funny!

It's on the same page http://senatesite.com/blog/2009/04/what-to-title-this-one.html

Watching JT on GP is just like watching an episode of Jerry springer only as funny as the fights

America has just became its own version of the Jerry Springer Show after a bizarre moment in Florida involving a carnival worker.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

He was bitching about how he only sent 11 emails, but yet again JT misses the point. It doesn't matter how many you send but weather or not you listen when they tell you to knock off the crap.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I thought he might be since he refered to the Utah Senate and then said "We continue to get E-mails,..."  Naturally, could have been a miscommunication.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Good thing there are no kissing scenes in GTA4, or else Jack might be sending out releases about the "full blown intercourse" in the game.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Actually there is a kissing scene. Roman kisses Mallorie during his wedding. I seriously doubt Jack Thompson could use that though since "kissing the bride" is a very normal action to occur during a wedding ceremony.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

True, but Jack has equated kissing to intercourse in the past.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail

John Bruce Thompson is like a End of Level Boss monster who is almost dead.

And even then, he has resorted to fireing off as many bombs as possible to kill everyone before he dies. (In a typical end of level Boss way)

I can tell you, while many of us gamers can only laugh at the pointless antics he keeps doing, there will be many politicians who will want to send this guy to jail now.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail

Just goes to show that Jack's behaviour, not 'those nasty gamers' are the ones behind Jack losing support amoung his allies.

I would love for the Utah Eagle Fourm to start seeing Jack like the NIMF saw him and wand to distance themselves from him as fast as they can.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail

I would like to wish it was true, but because of the Eagle Forum showing their own signs of crazyness, I would not be surprized if they started going to the shopping malls and shooting everyone then claim that it was the Violent Videogames they were trying to destroy that made them do this.

I think that senario is more likely but in the end, I don't want to see either of those things happening.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Remember that the instant David Walsh distanced himself from Jack, he went nuts and sent out all kinds of libelous accusations.  I would love to see him do this to the Eagle Forum...

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail

Yeah Jack, this will help you in your Supereme Court appeal, doing one of the many things again that you were found guilty of.......

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

As one note (and I know I'm only repeating what's been said before)...we can all learn from this as well.  E-mailing politicians can be a powerful way to get a message out.  But we must be sure to keep our messages to politicians or others formal, cordial and succinct.  One polite message is fine...a flurry of rants communicates crazy.  Otherwise it is too easy for politicians to paint gamers with the same strokes as JT.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Actually I think there's some validity to this premise.  I doubt that they're all of a sudden running out to buy GTA IV for their kids, but I do think they've realized that they were bamboozled a bit by a zealot.  That has obviously poured a bucket of ice water on their enthusiasm for this issue, at least temporarily.

I don't find anything hypocritical per se in Waddoup's position.  He's apparently being harrassed by JT and that has led him to rethink his involvement with JT and his issues.  I think that's reasonable.  Politicians aren't going to want to be associated with someone who's clearly a lunatic.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Again, it doesn't matter if he's a lunatic, or whether or not they realized he's a lunatic, if the legislation he came up with was sound.  Wanting to disassociate themselves from him is all well and good, but it still does not have anything to do with the legislature.  They can say, "we want nothing more to do with you because you don't know how to conduct yourself" and still back a bill that he happened to produce because the bill itself is sound.

Saying they're dropping support for his bill because they don't like him is disingenuous or proof of an uninformed decision.  They can choose their poison, but either way, they screwed something up.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I guess the point is that the legislation was NOT sound.  They took it on the work of JT and the Eagle forum, but now they've realized that they took the wrong advice from the wrong person.

The point is, they wanted to "protect the children".  And JT took it upon himself to use his "professional" history of being on television and writing books and whatnot to lend credibility to the bill.  Waddoup looked past the whole fact that he was disbarred, is a lunatic, etc.  And now he's discovering that he'd made a huge mistake in using JT to help push his own agenda.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I don't know if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me, but you basically just stated my entire case, quite succinctly :)

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I'd guess that there's a combination of factors....the bill failed which is going to sour some enthusiasm.  I think there was some negative (or at least mixed) coverage coming out about it with a reasonable number of folks, and not just gamers, critical of it.  JT being JT was probably just one more element of a piece of legistlation that didn't go the way folks had hoped.  It probably makes it easier for them to cut their losses, to distance themselves from a sponsor/creater who clearly is irrational.

So if the bill was on the verge of being an incredible success and they suddenly yanked it, I'd agree that would be odd...but since it was already circling the bowl...

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

"So if the bill was on the verge of being an incredible success and they suddenly yanked it, I'd agree that would be odd...but since it was already circling the bowl..."

It unanimously passed in both houses, it was only vetoed by the governor.  That's the sort of thing that is easily re-introduced in the next session if they actually give a damn about it.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Actaully, they've likely see nthe legislation for what it is, another thinly veiled attempt by Thompson to get developers who make M rated games so buried in lawsuits that it becomes impracticaly for them to go above a T rating.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail

So after he gets his arse booted out of Utah what state he will attempt to "correct" next?

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail

Lets try Caliafornia then, besides Yee could be JT's only best friend on this issue of Protecting Children from Violent Videogames.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

@lumi (sorry, something ran afoul in the "reply" attempt):

That's an oversimplified take on the matter, I think. Let's say, por arguendo, that Jack-O was discovered consuming child pornography and criminally charged accordingly. You really think that the Legislature should, under this hypothetical scenario, continue to support legislation drafted by him and which addresses itself to the issue of child pornography? Would you also think that a proposed Cabinet member's failure to pay income tax shouldn't be an issue raised during their confirmation process or isn't a good basis (stated or unstated) to withdraw their nomination or to decline the nomination?

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Apples and oranges.  Jack isn't being considered for anything; his legislation is.  Jack could be caught in bed with a goat the day after it's submitted to the Senate, and that fact wouldn't actually change the content of the bill he proposed.

Either it was good before they knew he was a nutcase, and now they don't want to support it for reasons unrelated to its actual content, or it was always bad from the start and they supported it for political reasons despite knowing it was bad, but those reasons are no longer so appealing since they know he's a nutcase.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Considering how much legislation lawmakers have to sift through they usually rely on a summery written by their aids. The realization that a particular bill was drafted by a nutbar is probably the flash needed to second guess previous support.

He probably does. This is Jack's biggest character flaw. He thinks he needs enemies to justify a meaning for his sorry life. This isn't some superhero movie.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

If I remember correctly, Jack's email shenanigans are what got him into trouble before. Countless people who spoke out agaisnt him received his constant shit-storm of emails and he then criticized them when they spoke out against the inane and moronic things he kept sending.

This is just Jack sticking to what few guns he has left. If he can't prance around courtrooms and TV news programs, he settles back into mass emailing everyone who has so much as looked at him. He's just very bad at being a troll, is what it seems like. In real life, he's quiet, well-spoken, and polite as many of you who have met him have attested to. Once he gets on the internet, he turns into the incendiary jerk-off who created the term pixelante and insists that GTA is sold to minors, though no evidence exists.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

That's pretty suggestive, but in all honesty, I find myself wondering if I haven't seen worse on network TV. Jack will be Jack I suppose, he can't send this stuff to the Supremes anymore so now he's started sending it to senators.  Ah well, these days, Jack's shenanigan's serve a valuable service.  Everything's so messed up all the time, it's good to have something to laugh at.  Shine on, you crazy diamond.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

Just a couple of weeks ago in an episode of Bones, the FBI agent Booth was given a lap dance by a bikini clad stripper. Granted you didn't actually see the lap, but you saw both the stripper and agent Booth from waste up while Bones watched and commented on it. Does that count?

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I wonder if Jack keeps an enemy list?  At this point, since everyone who disagrees with him (or just gets annoyed by him) is part of the gay conspiracy, Jack will need excel or an entire access database to keep track of them all.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I think it would just be easier for him to keep a friends list. It will be a lot shorter and he can cross off those that are "bought off by the video game industry!"

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over E-mail

I'd be curious what Gayle and Co over at the Eagle Forum think of Jack's behaviour. Are they standing behind him or distancing themselves?

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

9 times out of 10? They're behind him.

Although, I'm sure even they have a limit. We just need to see how much they can take...which, with JT on their side, probably won't take long.

And still, even if he geoes to jail, gets fined or what have you, Jack will believe he's doing no wrong. I only hope that this will lead to a psych exam of some kind.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

To bring some context to the latest JT drama, here's the NSFW pic that got Sen. Waddoups upset. While clearly not pornographic, it's a bit racy for GP's front page:

Some users can't see the pic. Not sure why that's happening.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I just checked in IE and could see the broken images, it seems you have two there. One being misslinked from file:///C:/Users/Dennis/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot.jpg whatever that's supposed to be and doesn't show up for obvious reasons, heh. The other http://www.gamepolitics.com/images/nico-lapdance.jpg just gives a 404 message. Wrong location maybe?

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

I can't see the image either.  When I copy/paste the image URL (http://www.gamepolitics.com/images/nico-lapdance.jpg) into an address bar I get the GP "...requested document was not found on our server." message.  Might be some over-active anti-direct-linking script?

What?  I don't remember this being in the game at all...

Not a GTA fan, but I liked GTAIV, possibly because it deviated from the original formula so much, like non Resident Evil fans loved RE4.

Re: Jack Thompson Criticized by Utah Senate Website over ...

You have to go to the strip club and go back to have a private dance and pay for 3 dances to get this.  This means you have to watch blocky nearly naked girls for about 5 minutes before you get to this.

Not that I did this, or anything.
