Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

April 27, 2009

The last few days have seen a rapid escalation of news surrounding the swine flu outbreak which recently began in Mexico.

But not to worry, says noted game designer's David Jaffe's medicine man. In a blog post Jaffe, best known for his God of War series, cites an e-mail sent today by his family doc, identified only as "Doctor Jay" of Santa Monica:

Swine Flu is a virus for which there is no vaccine, no threat to your family and there are undoubtedly tens of thousands of harmless undiagnosed cases throughout the world. The news stories are probably taking a hundred questionable respiratory deaths in Mexico and guessing.

There actually is a very, very small chance that this virus could cause severe illness and whenever this occurs hospitalization and even fatalities are reported. The likelihood of a pandemic is miniscule, but newspapers, governments agencies and the manufacturers of pharmaceuticals do their best work and make their biggest sales when people are scared...

The usual boring admonitions apply: wash your hands, stay well-rested and well-hydrated...

UPDATE: Then again, Reuters reports that the World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert level from 3 to 4. The change indicates that the virus can spead from human to human and cause "community-level outbreaks."

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Let me start off by saying that I think Dennis has been having a little fun with us lately, and I can't blame him for it. But even when he's making light of an issue doesn't mean he isn't drawing attention to it.

Now, we know that 20-odd people have died from the disease. Let's assume that 1000 people have it world-wide, and that's assuming a wide dispersal of the virus. That's 1.666...x10^-7% of the populace or 0.0000016667%. So, no, it's not yet that big of a deal. That doesn't mean that this idiot's doctor isn't a fool. While there's no reason to panic yet, there's no reason not to take simple precautions. Anyone who knows anything about a serious influenza outbreak knows that it's not a disease you want to poke in the eye.

Influenza can be a horrible disease to have, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It's probably responsible for wiping out Athens, after all, and let's not even think about 1918. So what's the harm in taking a few precautions to insure we don't get it? I'm not even talking about killing all the bean-eaters as Austin would likely wish us to (after all, they don't matter to real Americans), just making sure you wash your hands whenever possible and don't touch your mucous-producing areas -- eyes, nose, mouth (and the southern parts) -- after coming into contact with something that could carry the virus. That's not too much to ask, is it?

So while this isn't likely to be that big of a deal, that doesn't mean you don't need to do the minimal amount of effort you can to limit its impact.

I should care about what David Jaffe's doctor says because... why, exactly?

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Well, because...uh...err...wait...I'll get it, just wait a minute...ehhh...

Reality/////////////////////////////////////Fantasy. Seems like a pretty thick line to me...

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Meh, like it or not, he's probably right.

And hey, that's coming from someone who's rooting for swine flu. I think we'd all be a lot better off in the long run if it mutated into some super flu and wiped out 2/3 of the world's population.

Although, as a veteran of Pandemic 2, I can tell you right now - at the first sign that's happening, I'm moving to Madagascar. Damn you, Madagascar. Damn you to hell.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Fuck Madagascar. Someone sneezes in over Russia and they shut down the whole country!

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Why is David Jaffe such a douchebag?

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Hmm. Game designer's undentified family doc, along with a bunch of you no-knowledge internet wannabes, or the CDC, WHO, and people who actually know what the hell they're talking about.

Tough decision there.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

The change indicates that the virus can spead from human to human and cause "community-level outbreaks."

You know what else is a 'community level outbreak'? When the next generation of school kids ends up passing chicken pox around most of the kids in your community. Itching ahoy boys!

Here's a sensible retort from a 'no-knowledge internet wannabe': If you have young children, elderly or people with poor health and you start getting extreme flu symptoms, go get checked out rather then enduring it, so people that it could harm are protected. That's all that needs being done, the fear hyped by the media outlets is just retarded. Is why I don't watch the news.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Here's something you've missed: the deaths in Mexico were people who were young and healthy. Much like the Spanish Flu of 1918. And while people outside of Mexico haven't been seriously ill, it may just be a matter of time.

It sounds like it's time for some of you to read up on some important history. It also sounds like some of you need to take the potential of a pandemic seriously. After all, the last one was only 40 years ago; I'm assuming some of you had parents who lived through it.

But then, if you watched the news, you might know this.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Or read wikipedia.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

If the CDC and WHO hadn't become political tools, you might have a point.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Oh man, people in Mexico are dying?  Well, this sounds like my problem, just like their drug war and corruption and overall laziness sounds like my problem.

Seems to me like the bored news services are trying to link all sorts of deaths to this 'swine flu' in hopes of whipping up a frenzy.  You know who wins?  The assholes who make Tamiflu and just sold it to governments all over the for a complete non-issue.  They sold 12 million units or so to the USA alone (and how much does a unit cost, that's what I want to know).  Sounds like a great way to waste millions of dollars all because the news found a new boogeyman.

I want to know when we started taking what happens in Mexico and accepted that it should alter OUR behavior.  Fuck Mexico.  They're not a good indicator of the lethality of a disease, just like they're not a good example of how to run a government.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Yeah, fuck altering our behaviour based on the behavior of others! It's not like they border us or anything! And even if they did, it's a proven fact that one country's behavior cannot affect other contries.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

You're right!  We should be just like Mexico!  Hey guys, no guns for anyone who's not rich as hell, well-connected, or in a drug cartel! What  a dream come true!

Or maybe we should sign some UN treaties that'll encroach upon our constitutional rights.  Won't that be super?

Maybe we should start living like the people in Africa do.  Won't that be a real treat?  We can fight over rice, give Ak's to kids, and enslave people to work in our mines for whatever precious metals we can find.

Oh, there's so many behaviors we can learn from Mexico.  We can learn about corruption and government sloth, that's for sure! While we're at it, we can also have money that's nearly worthless!  Oh, we can also ignore the giant border problem we have, and like I said earlier, ignore drug cartles for 20 years until, lo and behold, we have a war on the streets.

My, the things we can learn from Mexico.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Yeah, because droug cartels have nothing to do with all the crackheads living in USA.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

And if your government hadn't spent the last 20 years playing 'we'll take the bribe and look the other way' we'd not have such a big crackhead problem.  All we'd really have to deal with is meth, and that shit pretty much kills the people who make it anyway.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Or you could shut up and actually give a damn about human lives for once.

if i remember reading correctly they are worried about it becuse it not just going to animal to human but human to human which it could mutant into something that worse and the trements might make it a stronger virus in the end.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

That is correct.  There are strains of influenza that attack only certain species - Avian flu for birds, swine flu for pigs, flu for humans - and are almost always harmless when it crosses to a different species.  So when one attacks a different species, it is cause for concern.  In my opinion however, the reaction is a bit overblown to the proportion of the problem.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

Swine flu sucks.  My father talks about a case of it that he got about 30 years ago.  It was the sickest he's ever been.  When you're temperature goes in the "red" and you're shooting out liquids faster than you can replace them, it can get bad.

Granted, he had access to decent medical facilities and took care of his health in general.  Most of the deaths we've heard about so far are from Mexico, which isn't the cleanest place around (don't lecture me, I've visited Mexico City, blech), and doesn't exactly offer the best in health care.

Are a lot of people probably going to get sick all over the world?  Probably.  Heard about Spain this morning on the BBC News.  But is it going to end up killing tens of thousands?  Probably not.  A simple anti-virus seems to work if you catch it in the first 72 hours, and healthy individuals can survive it just fine.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

A regular flu epidemic can kill 500,000 people.. flu is often pandemic (which merely means it spreads over a wide geographical area).  Not sure why they're getting their panties in a twist over this one (although I have my theories).

So yes, it probably will end up killing tens of thousands.. but that's *absolutely normal*.  Remember that when the press start hamming it up as the final apocalypse.

Not every city in Mexico is like Mexico City. Some better, some worse. It´s like say that every city in US is exactly as [insert worst city you know in USA]

Meh, I keep seeign cases about it on Fox news. This is just further reason as to why that channel doesn't get my ratings.

Man, you kids just can't hop off of Fox News' dick can you?  I've seen bullshit about it on CNN, MSNBC, BBC, as well as all the local affiliates.  But oh no, it's all Fox News.  It's not like everyone else isn't running it nonstop.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

According to a caller to C-Span this morning, the swine flu was made by a terrorist who couldn't smuggle it into America and settled on Mexico, confident it would move north.

You learn that there are many nuts when you watch C-Span's morning call-in show.

Re: Don't Sweat Swine Flu... David Jaffe's Doctor Says So

it's like the regular flu. it is just new and exciting, and fear sells, so the media is hyping it. should be fine. and what's more, if those people in mexico actually died of swine flu, it was probably because they couldn't get access to decent healthcare. how many cases in america are there? and how many of them died? that's right, as long as you can get to a hospital, and afford anti-virals, you will be fine.

Come to think about it, I think people LIKE being scared. They don't watch so much because they want to know what to do about it, but that they want to believe terror like you see in the movies actually exists in real life.

Especially with all the "End is Nigh" windbags out there. Global termoil, warfare, economic downfall, minority activism, and now widespread pestilence. It would be nice to believe the apocolypse is coming soon.
