An online game released more than a year ago is suddenly causing a stir in religious circles.
Faith Fighter, launched in January of 2008 by the always-provacative Molleindustria, allows players to pit various deities against one another in Mortal Kombat-style action. The virtual combatants in the game include a depiction of Allah, a serious no-no in the Muslim faith.
Metro.co.uk reports that some Christians, Hindus and Buddhists are upset as well. Douglas Miller, pastor of Birmingham's Link Church, told Metro:
This game is going out of its way to upset people and I think it should be taken off the internet. Playing violent video games will ultimately affect your behaviour and this game is deeply offensive and provocative.
An unnamed representative of the Federation of Muslim Organisations added:
In the current climate, this game can only create fear about religion. Having images depicting Muhammad in this way is also very offensive to our faith.
However, a spokesperson for Molleindustria defended the work:
[The purpose of the game is] to push gamers to reflect on how sacred representations are often used to fuel or justify conflicts between people.

Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
Because that's not being honest. Really, they did a quick-n-dirty parody of Mortal Kombat with characters they knew would offend people, and then they try to pass it off as a commentary? It's nothing but a publicity stunt, and they know it.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
I would agree with that if it wasnt for the fact this game has been out for over a year and it hasnt caused a stir till now.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
So it took a year for the stunt to pay off. It's still a stunt, and nothing more.
Still, I wish people would be more careful about what they choose to condemn. This game would have languished in obscurity if they had. It's like the saying goes, the key to wisdom is in knowing what to overlook.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
I actually knew about this game through Adultswim.com and loved it; had a great time playing Moses and given the smack down to all those wanna be religions (though Xenu was a pain when I got to him)
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
You kidding? Xenu's got a glass jaw. Attackattackattack... repeat until KO.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
They all have glass jaws; it's their attacks and the strengths of said attacks you have to watch out for.
Xenu may be weak, but he's got a freeze ray, a lightning gun, and a nuke attack for special moves. The freeze ray is definitely a pain in the ass, 'cause if you get hit with it, you're turned into a block of ice and can move for about 10 seconds.
And the religious commentary is all right there: fighting between which religion is better is bullshit. It doesn't matter which fighter you use: if you win the 1 Player mode, your character stands victorious amidst a planet of rubble and burnt-out buildings. Fighting will lead to only one thing: absolute ruin. I think that was the message they were trying to convey.

Game on, brothers and sisters.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
First Amendment. Discussion over.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
It's an english newspaper the interview is from so unfortunatly the 1st amendment desn't apply.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
Well no the game is hosted on others websites some of which are on run by Americans (such as newgrounds). So the 1st amendment may help.

Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.

This game is going out of its way to upset people and I think it should be taken off the internet.
Woo, I guess the game worked then, you seem to be pretty upset! I'll never understand why this sort of thing is offensive to people. Maybe if it had Allah raping a baby or something it would be offensive.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
wait it took them this long to find something offensive on the internet????
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
Yes. Take it off the internet, because that's totally possible.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
"I think it should be taken off the internet."
...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAno.
Most religious whiners can give it a fucking rest already. It's bad enough that a loud-enough population of each religion makes it a point to demonize and blast lifestyles, hobbies and ideas they don't agree with- we could do without them trying to tell others not to be offensive to anybody.
So Jesus Christ gets socked in the nuts until he falls over dead- big deal, he's going to come back in less than half a week anyway, what are you getting sore about? You COULD be laughing about it instead of clenching your ass everytime you think too hard on it. THIS is why we can't have nice things.

To his quote, we should reply "Please do not feed the trolls." Or in a context that relates better to them, "Turn the other cheek".

Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
Oh jeez. I just went to the article. They went to the effort to block out Mohammend. Or is it that way in the game?
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
Actually, you can choose between the normal version and one where his face is removed.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
The guy from Molleindustria had it right.
Plus, these people are getting so worked up over pointless shit, it's just stupid! I'd put a FacePalm, but I don't have any that would express just how stupid this shit is!

Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
What, no Jesus face palm? I know I've seen that one before.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
Even Jesus can't express how stupid this one is.
Re: Religious Groups Outraged by Online Game
Indeed, I considered it, but in the end, it's as you say, Mike. Not even Jesus knows how to express the extent of these people's stupidity.

Dear Mr. Miller,
Please do sod off.
For someone most likely upset about stereotypes he sure jumps to using them rather quickly.

Well, Miller, it looks like they've succeeded. Thanks to people like you. One thing I learned, when someone's trying to piss you off, IGNORE THEM!
