Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

April 30, 2009 -

Pacific Islanders are expressing outrage over a popular iPhone game which they say encourages the torture and killing of characters who resemble them.

The Brisbane Times reports that the Pacific Women's Information Network has targeted Pocket God, which puts the player in a deity-like position of power over "primitive islanders." Group spokesperson Elaine Howard - who lives in the United States - told the newspaper:

How do you think people would react if you created a game where you were God and you could create and kill as many Mexicans as you wanted? Or Asians? People would be outraged.

I hope you don't decide to advertise your application in New Zealand or Australia because you will get a backlash of the same intensity.

Dr. Malakai Koloamatangi of New Zealand's Canterbury University added:

To claim [the characters] are not Pacific islanders is ridiculous. Everything about them is Polynesian. How can they justify encouraging the torture of a race in this way? It's disgusting.

I'm not saying let's bring in the thought police but there needs to be limits on what is acceptable, and this surpasses those.

Bolt Creative, which developed the 99-cent app, denied that it intended to depict any actual ethnic group in the game.

LOL

In truth, I would probably annoy someone who lives in the United states, who's last contact with Antartic weather was a holiday in Canada and who's great grandfather was an Eskimo, which therefore gives them the right to represent the entire race ;)

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

Yeah, this seems much more likely!

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

I want all games that have you kill white people to be banned.  They offend me.

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

I'm offended you're implying it's ok to kill anyone that isn't white in a game. Duel at dawn?

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

I'm offended by the fact you're both offended. Move the duel to high noon and I'll join in.

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

I'm offended that you're all offended by stupid little things you find offensive.

IT'S TIME TO D-D D-D... D-D-D-D-DUEL!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist. At least I didn't react like Haruhi did that one time.

I'm offended that you are still refering to the combat as a duel as that is a combat between two indiviuals... at this rate it's becoming some kind of a battle royal.

Oh man, does it? But I've run out of explosive collers!

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

The "primal Islander" depiction stereotype has been around for, i'm guessing a long time, and that this game is in no way the first to do it.

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

I guess Black & White passed these guys by. Hell, I guess POPULOUS passed these guys by.

I'm not saying let's bring in the thought police but there needs to be limits on what is acceptable, and this surpasses those.

So you don't think we should call in thought police, but you ARE trying to say what the thought police should police.

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

While I agree with you, Black & White did this to white european-sounding people long before this game came around, I doubt that would change this person's mind even if they knew about it.  You notice what every group listed (islanders, mexicans, asians) is?  That's right, a minority.  And in the minds of chuckleheads like this, anything negative about a minority is instantly and completely evil and wrong, while anything bad about white people is perfectly legit.  Hypocritical?  Of course.  But that's their stance, and good luck changing it.

And of course, this stance also ignores the fact that, globally, white people are a minority.

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

Beat me to it. Black & White is more than enough to make their complaints look foolish.

Black and White 2 was the same, Greek, Japanese, Inca or Norse, at the end of the day, they are all equally flammable ;)

Worth it for the sound effects alone ;)

Re: Pacific Islanders Protest iPhone Game

I always thought of that game as "Race To Armageddon."  Then again, I owned the SNES version (probably still do, come to think of it) and it was heck of annoying trying to control it, plus I got owned when I reached a level that denied me the final-battle option.

Wow, these people must have pretty low opinions of themselves if they liken themselves to Video Game characters, what's next I wonder, complaints about 'Tropico' from Cuba?

Neo_DrKefkaSomeone anyone tell me how two wrongs somehow make a right? This is becoming exhausting and both sides are out of there minds!10/25/2014 - 11:40am
Neo_DrKefkaSo two GamerGate supporters received a knife and syringe in the mail today. The same GamerGate supporters who said how awful it was were seen in other tweets gathering lists and sending our similar threats or harassment to shut down the other side....10/25/2014 - 11:36am
NeenekoJust look at how interviews are handled. Media tends to pit someone who is at best a journalist, but usually entertainer, against an expert, and it is presented and percieved as if they are equals.10/25/2014 - 7:38am
Neeneko@MC - Focusing on perpetrator does nothing for prevention, the media and public lack the domain knowledge and event details to draw any useful conclusions. All we get are armchair risk experts.10/25/2014 - 7:36am
Neeneko@AE - no name or picture, I like it.10/25/2014 - 7:34am
PHX Corp@MW and AE The news media needs to stop promoting the Shooters. period10/25/2014 - 7:16am
Andrew EisenWhen I write about these massacres, I don't use the shooter's name or picture. I'm not saying everyone has to play it that way but that's how I prefer to do it.10/25/2014 - 12:44am
Andrew EisenYep, it's why the news media stopped spotlighting numbnuts who run out on the field during sporting events.10/25/2014 - 12:01am
Matthew Wilsonin media research its called the copycat effect. it simply says that if the news covers one mass shooting shooter, it increases the likelihood of another person going on a mass shooting.10/25/2014 - 12:00am
Andrew EisenAgreed. It bugs me that I know the names, faces and personal histories of a bunch of mass shooters but I couldn't tell you the name of or recognize a photo of a single one of their victims.10/24/2014 - 11:51pm
AvalongodAgree with Quiknkold. @Mecha...if that worked we would have figured out how to prevent these long ago.10/24/2014 - 11:32pm
MechaCrashUnfortunately, you have to focus on the perpetrator to figure out the whys so you can try to prevent it from happening again.10/24/2014 - 10:55pm
quiknkoldpoor girl. poor victims. rather focus on them then the shooter. giving too much thought to the monster takes away from the victims.10/24/2014 - 10:15pm
Andrew EisenFor what it's worth, early reports are painting the motive as "he was pissed that a particular girl wouldn't date him."10/24/2014 - 10:12pm
quiknkoldwell then I suck as a man cause I ask for help when necessary :P10/24/2014 - 10:07pm
Technogeek(That said, mostly I was making the smartass evopsych comment because your post seemed like the kind of just-so story that has come to dominate 99% of its usage.)10/24/2014 - 10:04pm
TechnogeekHell, Liam Neeson built his modern career around it. Cultural factors likely play a far greater role than you appear willing to admit.10/24/2014 - 10:03pm
TechnogeekSeriously, though, the idea of "because women are protectors and that's why they never commit school shootings" is, at best, grossly overreductive. There's nothing inherently feminine about being willing to kill in order to protect one's offspring.10/24/2014 - 10:03pm
MechaCrashThe "toxic masculinity" thing refers to how you have to SUCK IT UP AND BE A MAN because seeking help is seen as weakness, which means you suck at manliness, so it builds and builds and builds until something finally snaps.10/24/2014 - 10:01pm
