GameSpy has a whimsical, multi- (really multi-) panel cartoon depicting the great circle of life as it pertains to games.
Click here for the full cartoon.

Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
The only bit I have a problem with is the idea that a child "illegally" buys it from a store. It is not 'illegal' to sell any ESRB-rated game to a child.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Wishful thinking on the part of the artist, perhaps?
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
That comic winz
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
I'm a bit weirded out by the panel stating that a child "illegally" buys the game. Since when is it illegal to sell ANY game to a person of ANY age? (disregarding something that is pornographic or obscene, or whatever requirement is needed for it to be restricted)
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Keep in mind all of the politicians that want to make it illegal for that.
Freedom of speech means the freedom to say ANYTHING, so long as it is the truth. This does not exclude anything that might hurt someone's feelings.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Outside of the US of A there are countries that do restrict the sale of things, movies as well as games, based on age ratings.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
The cartoon's game is rated by the ESRB - that means it's going to be sold in the USA.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
But perhaps there was something else illegal about the child's purchase. Using counterfeit money, perhaps?

Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
There needs to be an extra panel, squeezed in after the second: boobs are added to it.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
That would counter the "it doesn't sell" step later on. Missing the boobs is really the reason for the rest of Game's life.
The ultimate game would be a freeform world you could explore at leisure, backed up by a sweeping graphics engine and comprehensive physics simulator, armed with a gun with two settings: One which adds boobs to things, and one which sets things on fire. With Novint Falcon support.

That's a good start, your forgetting to mention one important feature though.
Do you play as a grizzled space marine?

Boob! Headshot!
/b
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Oh great, spoiler warning next time maybe. You do play as a grizzled space marine (who has lost his romantic interest) but you aren't supposed to know that until the end because you have amnesia.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Amnesia with boobs?

Really, the two panels you have here are the only two panels worth reading.

Interestingly, this is like Insomniac's take on the Spyro franchise.
"Insomniac Games President Ted Price stated in an interview about Resistance: Fall of Man that they stopped creating Spyro games because the player character, Spyro, was too limited for them to add new features and actions (Ted states, as an example, that "he didn't even have hands, he couldn't even hold a gun."

Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
What a sad lack of imagination this shows...
I mean, of course Spyro could hold guns! He could have them mounted to his wings or tail or something! Come on, Price, use your thinking cap! You can get guns in there somewhere! :D
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Of Course Row 4 Panel 2 answers one of the lingering questions I had from working at EB Games.
What happens to all the boxes and manuals for these games people trade in? I cannot tell you the number of games that were traded in on my shift that had no boxes and manuals. It is as if these people throw them away and keep all their games in a cd wallet.

Yeah that always confused me too; I can understand maybe a PC game but Console games where are you storing the thing?
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Judging by the condition of most disks that were brought in, they were storing them on their gravel driveway.

Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Agreed. Everything after that seemed excessively cynical.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
Thirded.
I know the strip was grossly exaggerating everything anyway, but since when did testers 'approve' games? I can't recall any capacity for that when I was in QA anyway.
Re: Cartoon: The Life Cycle of a Video Game
"Testers" do not approve the code, but the QA department does approve (or deny approval it as the case may be) the code for submission to first party. They can always be overruled however....
Also, testers wouldn't be narcoleptic if they weren't forced to work 70-80 hour work weeks....just saying...

I dunno. The notion of Jack-O vowing to sue a fire brought a smile to my face.
