Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

HEATHENS, all of them.

Freedom Fighters should be up at the TOP of these lists, or at least very close to 1st place- good play mechanics, and Jesper Kyd's music in it is win.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Interestingly, the original concept for Freedom Fighters involved a near-future right-wing military coup, not a near-past Soviet invasion. It was changed because the publisher (Eidos) believed the latter story would sell a whole lot better in the States (and they may well have been right, of course).

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

No mention of Colonization?

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

How did 50 Cent and GTA 4 make these lists?  I've never played these games, is there a somewhat over-the-top pro-USA message in them?

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

My thoughts exactly. I guess 50 Pence BOTS made it there because he's running round madeupistan in the Middle East blowing the crap out of anyone looking at him funny, and GTA 4 is a CRITICISM of the U.S.A. and it's materialist/capitalist fanaticism, so that is also a weird one to call 'patriotic'.

In fact it's a little disturbing just how many of those top 20 seem to class running/flying/driving around and blowing up foreigners as 'patriotic'.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

I was just about to say that. The site says:
"Grand Theft Auto IV, the latest game in the popular series, is about a lot of things. The main character, a Croatian immigrant named Niko Bellic, has to kill, kill, and kill some more to keep him and his cousin Roman out of harm’s way, but that’s not the life he wants. He came to America to get away from such violence and find the one thing so many of us are after – the American Dream."

I'm not quite sure whether he's being satirical or not. GTA4 is ruthlessly critical of the American Dream as it exists today in New York, just read the back of the box.

I think it's like certain WWE wrestlers, where being anti-American is very effective for being a heel (Villain) character, only, hilariously, the opposite can work too - the Big Show could pick up and maim a frail old woman and throw her out of the ring onto the concrete, but as long as he then shouts "US-A! US-A!" the crowd will love him.

Maybe GTA4 is the same as it's got the stars and stripes in the game.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Well you can just go to the site and read the descriptions... someone already pointed out GTA... as for 50 cent

"This sequel is basically one gigantic middle finger to the rest of the world."

Yup, that's american international point of view in a nutshell

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Just because this game seems to fit your very narrow view of America doesn't make it patriotic in any way.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Tell that to the people who are putting it on the 'patriotic' list.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Well, I want to know why the listmakers put it on the list.  Some snide, possibly anti-American comment doesn't count.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

In the case of GTA I agree, it's like they REALLY missed the not-very-subtle digs at current American culture.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games
Metal Wolf Chaos is only on two of the lists. This cannot stand.
Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Amusingly enough, The Game Overthinker has taken an interesting approach on "patriotic" games.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Interesting video, I especially agree with what he was saying about games like Halo and COD 4 not being 'patriotic' and just being an 'army fetish'. It especially rings true looking at some of these lists.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Shouldn't this list include games like Operation Wolf and Rambo. Granted they are not great games but they carry a sense of over-patriotism.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

 Nationalism is sickening

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Nationalism is often confused with patriotism. Meaningless flag waving is not patriotism.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

I'm not saying it is, or even should be.  However, if you don't like the place you live, work to change it or move away, and stop complaining about the people who like it the way it is.

"move away, and stop complaining about the people who like it the way it is."

Now THAT is the current state of American 'patriotism'.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

I like you you missed the rest of the post entirely, such as the "if you don't like something about your country, do something to change it."  Way to be a complete douchebag.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Umm.... Nationalism and Patriotism are two totally separate concepts.

Nationalism- love, focusing on the nation as a whole, including its history, culture and people (however good or bad they might be).

Patriotism- the word itself has different meaninings, each personal. To some, it's love for a nation's ideals, not just one's home- to the Greeks, particularly, it consisted of language, ethics, ideals and the like of one's nation, as opposed to just loving the nation itself.

JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:32am
Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:30am
Austin_Lewis: There are other firearms that fire the 5.7. However, I too would like to know where he got the ammo and what kind was used. Maybe Hasan, planning not to live through this, went out and bought one the boxes of SS190 that are floating around in
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:44am
JDKJ: And it isn't yet clear what type of ammunition Hasan used. It's strange that he purchased a gun but didn't purchase ammunition for it at the same place and time. Especially because the calibre required is peculiar to the actual gun.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:40am
JDKJ: We can sit here all day and debate the relative merits. However, I think the events of recent days suggest that an FN Five-Seven ain't exactly the same as that Daisy BB gun you got for Christmas when you were a kid.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:38am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: tumbling can be quite dangerous. However, the rounds that commonly tumbled were variants of the SS90. Civilian ammo tends to tumble far less commonly.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:33am
JDKJ: I understand that while they don't have much expansion effect, they tend to "yaw" on impact. Yaw can be almost just as damaging as mushrooming.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:30am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: Except when one considers the lack of expansion for the 5.7, it basically ends up leaving a far smaller hole.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:29am
JDKJ: But if the latter's travelling at close to twice the speed of the former, there's a compensatory effect on the weight difference.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:27am
Austin_Lewis: And of course, having nothing pass through or into one's brain is always the preferrable outcome.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:26am
Austin_Lewis: For comparison, commonly available 9mm run from 115 to 147 grains. 5.7s run between 28 and 40 grains.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:24am
JDKJ: Again, I'd rather not have any foreign objects either lodge in or pass through my brain, thank you very much.
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:22am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: Better than a larger projectile expanding as it lodges itself in one's brain.
