Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

 Nationalism is sickening

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Umm.... Nationalism and Patriotism are two totally separate concepts.

Nationalism- love, focusing on the nation as a whole, including its history, culture and people (however good or bad they might be).

Patriotism- the word itself has different meaninings, each personal. To some, it's love for a nation's ideals, not just one's home- to the Greeks, particularly, it consisted of language, ethics, ideals and the like of one's nation, as opposed to just loving the nation itself.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

If you take no pride in your nation, what would you take pride in?

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Nationalism is often confused with patriotism. Meaningless flag waving is not patriotism.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

I'm not saying it is, or even should be.  However, if you don't like the place you live, work to change it or move away, and stop complaining about the people who like it the way it is.

"move away, and stop complaining about the people who like it the way it is."

Now THAT is the current state of American 'patriotism'.

I like you you missed the rest of the post entirely, such as the "if you don't like something about your country, do something to change it."  Way to be a complete douchebag.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Shouldn't this list include games like Operation Wolf and Rambo. Granted they are not great games but they carry a sense of over-patriotism.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Amusingly enough, The Game Overthinker has taken an interesting approach on "patriotic" games.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Interesting video, I especially agree with what he was saying about games like Halo and COD 4 not being 'patriotic' and just being an 'army fetish'. It especially rings true looking at some of these lists.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Metal Wolf Chaos is only on two of the lists. This cannot stand.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

How did 50 Cent and GTA 4 make these lists?  I've never played these games, is there a somewhat over-the-top pro-USA message in them?

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Well you can just go to the site and read the descriptions... someone already pointed out GTA... as for 50 cent

"This sequel is basically one gigantic middle finger to the rest of the world."

Yup, that's american international point of view in a nutshell

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Just because this game seems to fit your very narrow view of America doesn't make it patriotic in any way.

Tell that to the people who are putting it on the 'patriotic' list.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Well, I want to know why the listmakers put it on the list.  Some snide, possibly anti-American comment doesn't count.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

In the case of GTA I agree, it's like they REALLY missed the not-very-subtle digs at current American culture.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

My thoughts exactly. I guess 50 Pence BOTS made it there because he's running round madeupistan in the Middle East blowing the crap out of anyone looking at him funny, and GTA 4 is a CRITICISM of the U.S.A. and it's materialist/capitalist fanaticism, so that is also a weird one to call 'patriotic'.

In fact it's a little disturbing just how many of those top 20 seem to class running/flying/driving around and blowing up foreigners as 'patriotic'.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

I was just about to say that. The site says:
"Grand Theft Auto IV, the latest game in the popular series, is about a lot of things. The main character, a Croatian immigrant named Niko Bellic, has to kill, kill, and kill some more to keep him and his cousin Roman out of harm’s way, but that’s not the life he wants. He came to America to get away from such violence and find the one thing so many of us are after – the American Dream."

I'm not quite sure whether he's being satirical or not. GTA4 is ruthlessly critical of the American Dream as it exists today in New York, just read the back of the box.

I think it's like certain WWE wrestlers, where being anti-American is very effective for being a heel (Villain) character, only, hilariously, the opposite can work too - the Big Show could pick up and maim a frail old woman and throw her out of the ring onto the concrete, but as long as he then shouts "US-A! US-A!" the crowd will love him.

Maybe GTA4 is the same as it's got the stars and stripes in the game.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

No mention of Colonization?

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

HEATHENS, all of them.

Freedom Fighters should be up at the TOP of these lists, or at least very close to 1st place- good play mechanics, and Jesper Kyd's music in it is win.

Re: More Lists of Patriotic Video Games

Interestingly, the original concept for Freedom Fighters involved a near-future right-wing military coup, not a near-past Soviet invasion. It was changed because the publisher (Eidos) believed the latter story would sell a whole lot better in the States (and they may well have been right, of course).

MattsworknameFor the record, here is a list of games with female protagnists from they year 2014, as per giant bomb.07/28/2015 - 5:01pm
Mattsworknameandrew, I think natir may have ment a differnet point. I don't think he was aruging the workplace side, I think he was aruging the diversity in the games themselves, maybe.07/28/2015 - 5:01pm
Andrew EisenAnd I'll repeat this as many times as it needs repeating: no one (except maybe some random, anonymous numb nuts on Twitter) is calling anyone a misogynist simply for disagreeing with Sarkeesian and her ilk.07/28/2015 - 5:01pm
Andrew EisenNatir - What lie? What movement? What does that snide quote have to do with anything?07/28/2015 - 5:00pm
Andrew EisenMatt - Completely disagree. Any thinking person can see that just like with gamers, the most toxic elements, while the most attention getting, are not the majority or representative of the whole.07/28/2015 - 4:59pm
Andrew EisenNatir - Harassment and sexism in the workplace is true. It's been extensively observed and documented. That doesn't mean everything is bad. But that all doesn't mean shining a light on it to try and make it even better is an undesirable move either.07/28/2015 - 4:57pm
NatirThe movement they started is based on a complete lie and that is the real problem. Most people don't realize or those that do, ignore it because of the reprisal they get for disagreeing. You disagree with them and call them out? You are misogynistic now.07/28/2015 - 4:57pm
NatirHere is a good quote from the wordpress site: "Zoe Quinn with her little twine game commands the attention to be in documentaries, to be quoted on Kotaku, as Anita Sarkeesian is claimed to be one of the 100 most influential people in the world."07/28/2015 - 4:55pm
MattsworknameAndrew: its very true what you say, but with Feminism, the toxic fringe has become the main stream face of the movment, to the point where the US rep to the un on womens issues has called feminism a toxic word.07/28/2015 - 4:55pm
Natirdirectly related to games and politics.07/28/2015 - 4:53pm
NatirThe point is that these women do very little for the gaming industry but paint it to be a very bad place. From just constant harassment from (male) gamers to just sexism in the workplace. Stuff that just isn't true. Take a look for yourself since this is07/28/2015 - 4:53pm
Andrew EisenMatt - Every group has its jerk faces. Especially groups like feminists that are so large they encompass the vast majority of the population.07/28/2015 - 4:47pm
Andrew EisenAnd I don't get the sense many if any take anyone's thoughts at face value. They seem to be listening to what they have to say, evaluating what they heard, agreeing or disagreeing and acting accordingly. Or just outright ignoring them in the first place07/28/2015 - 4:44pm
Mattsworknametoxic to it's economy07/28/2015 - 4:42pm
MattsworknameWow, im out for a day and some cool discussion happens. On the subject brought up by Natir, I think modern feminism has be come toxic, at least in it's radicalized form ,much te same as I feel about how unions went from improtant things in the us to being07/28/2015 - 4:42pm
Andrew EisenI don't know about anyone else but I'm not comfortable forming an opinion let alone drawing a conclusion without having seen even one of the allegedly harassing tweets.07/28/2015 - 4:41pm
NatirI just find it baffling that the gaming industry as a general whole take what those women say at face value... On the Canadian man story, I don't think he will be charged but I think the women will be charged with something.07/28/2015 - 4:30pm
Goth_SkunkFor reference, this is the matter to which Natir is referring: http://ow.ly/QcAch And -- small world after all -- Anita Sarkeesian is indirectly tied to it.07/28/2015 - 4:22pm
NatirIt kind of reminds me of the 3 women who took that one man (in Canada) to court because he disagreed with them on Twitter.07/28/2015 - 4:12pm
