U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days to Explain Why He Shouldn't Also Be Disbarred From Federal Court

July 7, 2009 -

Jack Thompson may have wowed the gamer crowd at SGC09 over the weekend, but Chief Judge Federico Moreno of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida appears to be decidedly less smitten with the disbarred attorney's act.

In a court order issued on June 26th, Moreno directed Thompson to explain why his October, 2008 disbarment by the Florida Bar should not also extend to Thompson's ability to argue before the federal bench.

"Wait," you're saying to yourself, "I thought Jack Thompson was already disbarred?"

That's correct. But Thompson has maintained for some time that the disbarment order of the Florida Supreme Court applies only to the state court system. Thompson has even taken to including verbiage to that effect in the headings of his e-mails, like the one below:

John B. Thompson, Juris Doctor
Once and Future Attorney
(address removed by GP)
Only Admitted to Practice in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, Not Admitted in Florida

Despite Thompson's claim, Judge Moreno's order seems to indicate that Thompson's ability to function as a lawyer in federal court is, at best, on life support.

For his part, Thompson reacted with typical bluster to the Judge's order. For example, a July 2nd e-mail to Judge Moreno (cc'd to GamePolitics) demands copies of any communications concerning Thompson between the Southern District Court and the Florida Bar. In the e-mail Thompson seems to mock Judge Moreno and makes reference to being placed on a "terrorists watch list":

I make this request/demand because of your prior improper placement of me on a terrorists watch list in retaliation for my sending you a letter about judicial misconduct on your watch. Even the Deputy US Marshals thought that was absurd.  They laugh now every time I show up at the courthouse asking, “Are you still a dangerous terrorist, Mr. Thompson?”  Funny stuff.

Now you have entered a show cause order demanding that I explain why you should not disbar me from the federal court, and in doing so you have told me to spend at least $30,000 to make my case in producing documents all of which the Florida Supreme Court has and [can] give you free of charge...

If I get sent to Gitmo as a “terrorist,” then please send the stuff there.  I’ll be facing Tallahassee in prayer several times a day as required.

If you are curious as to the "terrorist watch list" reference, as GamePolitics reported last year, Judge Moreno dispatched a pair of U.S. Marshals to meet with Thompson afer the embattled attorney wrote to the judge, complaining:

We find yesterday that enemy combatants at Guantanamo are to get more due process from federal judges than what I am to have. I guess my "mistake" was not killing 3000 people to make my point...

Shortly thereafter Thompson complained that he was stopped from entering the courthouse in Miami by security personnel and was only permitted to enter the building with an escort.

Thompson, whose petition to review his disbarment was denied by the United States Supreme Court earlier this year, has a separate case relating to the disbarment ongoing in the Southern District.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Honestly, if I sent the court pictures of buildings blown up and said "this is what's going to happen to you" and casually mentioned killing 3,000 people, I'd be upset if I wasn't on the terrorist watch list.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Eh, Thompson just believes that he is above the law, that nothing he personally says or does should ever have repercussions.

But should anyone dare disagree with him to any extent, well, he'll want you shipped off to Gitmo, likely thinking a few stretched necks are a small price to pay to kepe his illusion intact.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Now that Jack is pumped up because his appearing at SGC, I just hope he does something really stupid to get his federal license absulutly revoked from planet Earth.

The man is crazy by his own will. He should be even get revoked for entering a pizza parlor.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Jack consistently ROFLs my waffles.  We are going to get pwnd so badly by him one day, just wait...

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

I'd be worried, except I doubt Jack could actually behave for 30 days, and he's off to a horrible start.  Jack's biggest problem is that he takes things like this as personal insults and responds in kind.

Any clue where the $30,000 thing comes from?

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Considering that Jack's disbarment case (and all of the subsequent filings, sub-filings, responses, etc.) generated hundreds of documents and at least 2500 pages of comedic fodder, the fees for the SCOFLA clerk to make copies of all of these documents and ship them to the federal court is probably going to be very high.

If the fee is $150 per document it could easily be $30,000.

Yes...Jack killed that many trees in his quest for justice.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Well, those trees were made to die for paper anyways.  If anything, his actions have only increased the demand for paper, thus causing an increase in supply, which means more trees are being planted.  If anything, JT is the greatest environmentalist there is.  How many greenpeace members have planted as many trees as his actions have caused to be planted?

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

None; all the members of Greenpeace are far too busy being self-righteous and harassing people with their Cold War Era diesel freighter on the high seas to do anything positive for the environment.

As for Jack, I think he's inflating the number quite a bit.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Is that the legal fees he had to pay for the other disbarment case?

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Nope his legal fees were $43,675.35. I've saved the legal document that announced his disbarment (it's public record but I saved it anyway). Although funny thing I went snooping around the disbarment documents of other Florida lawyers a while ago and it seems like most of them only had to pay $1,000 in fines.

Problably the cost of printing a submitting all the documents and evidence he submitted with his last case.

Or he could be making up numbers off the top of his head.

It's 30 cents per page for each of the documents submitted in the prior case(s)...

And $5k per fax machine he's broken  :D

Ah, that's good stuff.  Thanks Jack, I was having a bad morning!  Hopefully he won't follow this up with his usual flurry of...stuff?  Ever hear that old expression?  Politicians can talk a long time and say very little?  Makes you wonder why Jack hasn't tried his hand at getting elected!

(shrug)  Jokes aside, you never know.  He behaved himself at the debate, maybe this a tad naive of me, but I'll cross my fingers and hope he can behave himself before he gets banned from federal court.  I'll hope for it, but I wouldn't bet on it!

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

The bad part about political jokes is they tend to get elected so please dont make anymore jokes about Thompson.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Jack HAS tried his hand at getting elected, c1980. The results of his campaign against Janet Reno (the full extent of which was "she is a closet lesbian and is being blackmailed over this by the mafia") bought him into the national spotlight for the first time - as a complete douchebag who was dinged spectacularly by aforementioned Janet Reno as the public looked on and laughed. He'll not try that one again until his memory goes the same way as his competence.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Judging by his tendancy to forget everything that doesn't agree with him I'd say he will try it again soon.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

I think it was 18-19 months ago or so when jackie made noises about running for the office of the President of the Florida bar.  Mind you he was attempting to sue them during this time.  This was after sending out faxes and emails beyond number and getting some replies.   Of course as it typical to jackie this went nowhere and was quietly swept under something.

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Definitely don't bet on it. People are pretty consistent, and Jack's shown time and again, that the only times he can even possibly behave himself is: in person, while not in court.

"They laugh now every time I show up at the courthouse asking, 'Are you still a dangerous terrorist, Mr. Thompson?'  Funny stuff."

Why do I picture him saying "funny stuff" without a trace of a smile on his face?

Re: U.S. District Court Judge Gives Jack Thompson 30 Days ...

Its nice to see that Jack is able to laugh with these guys.  He brought suit against them when one of the guards had to escort Jack in the courthouse.  That's the time Jack equated riding in the elevator with a guard as being imprisonment.

MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
