Michael Cherry, a 38-year-old Ontario man in court to plead guilty to possessing child pornography, offered a unique explanation for his crime.
The London Free Press reports:
Admitting he possessed child pornography, a London man said yesterday he lived "in a closed box" of friendless fantasy fuelled by video games, his computer and comic books.
"I'd work, come home . . . lock myself in my apartment..."
After a difficult childhood in foster care, separated from his siblings, his client became a truck driver who lived by himself in squalor and clinical depression, Squire said. "He was in a black hole . . . a strange sort of world his computer created."

I'm surprised he didn't blame Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music too, then he could have covered almost all of the old media bugaboos.
As others have said, his computer did not create the problem, it just made it easier for him to create the problem. If the computer's responsible then it's that bottle of Jack Daniels that is responsible for my headache, not me.

It's not just the porn, it's CHILD porn. You know, as in the actors are children. Which is illegal almost everywhere. If he was watching Debbie Does Dallas, nobody would have a problem. He was watching Debby's 12th Birthday Shower, which may not make him a predator per se, but does bring up an issue of psychosis that needs to be dealt with.

Fun fact: in the UK, it's illegal to know how to recover data from a broken hard drive.
The thinking is, that "...but as soon as I found out what it was, I deleted it" is an excuse that will fly in court if you're accused of downloading child porn. Unless, of course, you know how to un-delete it.

Seems like he'd get more sympathy and a lessened case if they could prove that his troubled childhood and his depersonalizing work as a truck-driver was the source of his provlems. Hell, if they could try some sort of insanity plea, it might work more than blaming the games, the computer, and the various things he chose to buy and use to seal himself away from humanity.

His computer didn't create the hole, he did, the computer didn't force him to become a recluse, he chose to, the computer didn't force him to download child porn, he chose to.
Like any tool, a computer contains the potential for abuse, a screwdriver can become a murder weapon, but that is not the fault of the screwdriver, it is the fault of the person using it, there's even been a case of someone killed with a paintbrush, need to track that one down.
Sorry to hear he had various syndromes as a child, I only had one, it's called 'locking up child molesting bastards syndrome', but I've never been able to shake it...

I agree, there's plenty that people can do to improve their lives and being addicted to your computer is just a rejection of trying to do anything about it.

True, an over-generalization on my part, was kind of annoyed at the time, if someone has a problem like paedophilia, I can, to a certain degree, feel an aspect of sympathy for them with the way society treats them, but feel they definately need to get help, I cannot support what they desire.
However, when someone tries to blame that problem on external influences as though you can catch it from looking at too much GTA or the like, that just gets my goat, it's Thompsonism at it's greatest.
Anyway, as I said, you are correct, he is not a molestor, but he should still be seeking help rather than allocating blame ;)
