Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro Controversy

July 20, 2009 -

A Flash game in which players must shoot naked men in order to avoid being sexually assaulted has sparked controversy in Eastern Europe.

As reported by The Observers, Watch Out Behind You, Hunter! was originally released in 2002 on the French Uzinagaz portal, but subsequently banned following protests by gay rights advocates. More recently, the game has surfaced on a site hosted in Georgia.

Gay Armenia writes:

This is totally disgusting. The website has to be shut down unless they take this game out of their server... I wonder, where are the voices of those religious-minded people in Tbilisi, Georgia, who swear in the name of Georgian patriarch and constantly cite Bible to ‘justify’ their homophobia and hatred. Is this their (un-)‘orthodox’ way of bringing up children by creating an image of enemy (=gays) and teaching how to deal with it (=kill them)?

Jean Christophe Calvet, who operates Uzinagaz, defended the game:

We launched this game [in 2002] and it worked very well. It was only a few years after it came out that a gay rights association took legal action against us. So we withdrew the game. It's no longer available on French sites, but it's impossible to wipe it from all foreign sites too.

I have to say that at the beginning, we really didn't understand why the association was attacking us. The guy who came up with the game... wanted to mock hunters and red-necks, not gay men.

Our games are not politically correct. They're aimed at teenagers (12-18) and it's true that they're of a juvenile humour. I realise now that this one in particularly could be found shocking, but I believe that you should be able to make this kind of joke in the name of freedom of speech...

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Assumingn this is indeed against gays which I admit i'm not sure if it is or not but if it is, I definately don't feel it should be removed. Too many times we're on the recieving end of someone playing god of what is appropriate and what isn't and enforcing those views on everyone else. I refuse to become the demon I wish to slay so my form of protest is....I won't play it. Problem solved.

If you really don't want government intervention in your back yard then stop asking the government to make decisions you should be making for yourself!

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

The problem with your statement:  It's logical, so it won't be heeded by people who cry "homophobe" whenever somebody says the word gay, or by the people who cry "terrorist" whenever somebody says the word Muslim.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Funny thing is I don't see all the usual conservatives that call of "this and that" game to be banned calling for this game to be banned.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Because banning games are totally useful for any activism or cause.

I found the pictures of the game funny.  It's no worse than Red neck games or the Boondocks.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

I think the 'bigger' a movement gets, the more out of touch it becomes with its members to be honest. There's quite a history of it.

Greenpeace now does very little that normal people would claim 'represents the public feeling' on the environment any more.

PETA now does very little that normal people would claim represents the public feelings on animal cruelty.

The Eagle Forum does very little that represents the feelings of 90% of Conservatives, opting for more governmental interference in a party that is small government.

We never did see that huge Hindu boycott of Hanuman the Boy Warrior, because, once again, the representation was totally out of touch with the feelings of the people it was representing.

I personally, just see this as evidence that, unfortunately, representative groups for homosexuals are also starting to head in this direction.

It comes to something when someone has to spend ages searching, in order to hold something in the air and say 'look, I had to dig really deep to find it, but I've found something that offends me!' (And I will add, possibly with controversy, that this is a trap the Video Game press falls into on occasion as well).

I fully support equality and the right to a normal life regardless of sexuality, but like many groups that have been persecuted, their representitives need to stay in touch with the real world around them and learn to prioritise the problems, yes, this might be interpreted as a bit 'dodgy', but seriously, there are far more pressing problems for the homosexual community than a flash game, and, I suspect if you spoke to the community, instead of the representative groups, you'd be hearing a wholly different story.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

I agree with you, but there is a problem with your logic.  If the special interest groups stayed in touch with the people they represent, they would lose power and clout.  At some point, these groups have a decision to make.  After they acheive what they set out to acheive (basic human rights, cultural awareness, whathaveyou), they can either disband or come up with problems that are not necessarily a big issue (such as gay marriage or 10 commandments in a courthouse) so they have an excuse to continue to exist.  Most choose the latter, as there is a lot of money and power involved.  That's why a lot of unions, even though everything they were created to get are federally required to be provided by every employer regardless of industry, continue to strike on an almost annual basis for more money.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

I agree, which is unfortunate, because it's not as if there are not issues still existing those areas, it's just that they aren't 'high profile' enough to attract a large representative groups attention, but, at least they are 'real' issues that people are having pushed upon them, not issues that people have gone out of their way to dig up.

There just seems to be a cut-off point, where someone goes from representing the feelings of a group to believing that the group exists to represent their feelings.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Frankly I didn't see the homophobia in it; I saw it as a guy is dropped in a forest in which naked people are trying to rape him so he defends himself. Granted the controls sucked and I played only for a few moments (level 6ish I believe).  I mean lets face it if it was trully homophobic it would have been a guy in a normal situation shooting people that don't fit his norm and when they touch him he loses and turns gay himself.  That would have been homophobic (or at least imo homophobic).

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Well, most people who spout about people being "homophobic" don't actually know the definition of the word--having an irrational fear of homosexuals. The word is almost always used incorrectly.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Agreed. Most people use 'homophobe' when they really mean 'bigot.' But then the bigots whine about being called what they are...

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

I think you're assuming that many of the people refered to as homophobes are actually bigots. People can believe tha homosexuality is wrong without being homophobic or bigotted; it just happens to be politically incorrect. Generally, it's easier to call them a name like homophobe or bigot than to logically disagree with them or--and this is going to sound crazy--accept that they have a right to their opinion, too. Some people are bigots, but most people aren't the Westboro Baptist Church and don't actively hate gays even if they disagree with them.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

The free speech defense always sort of amuses me. It's never "My work is actually quite important and well-thought-out!" or "My work is valuable because of the artistic merit". It's just "Don't take away my work, because that would violate an ideal that wasn't intended to apply to this sort of thing."

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Wow, another person who thinks in the line of 'free speech only applies to stuff that doesn't offend me or anyone else', thus completely missing the point of free speech.

I am damn glad you will never get anywhere near a free speech issue.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Didn't know that the First Amendment applied to all countries across the world. Can't see what US law has to do with Armenia.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Considering no-one could have possibly concieved of the Internet when the Declaration was signed, I wouldn't shout too loud about what the First Amendment was 'intended' to apply to. Also, satire has been a political tool for years, and satire far more cutting than this, you only have to look to Voltaire or the classic 'Modest Proposal' to see that Satire is not only a useful political tool, but an old one.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Well, I seriously dislike your opinion, but I´m not asking to ban your face from internet because you think freedom of speech has exceptions...

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

What do you mean "Don't take away my work, because that would violate an ideal that wasn't intended to apply to this sort of thing."?

The freedom of speech and the press was meant for just this sort of thing. It doesn't matter if the speech is agreeable or not. They have a right to make it. That is what the first amendment was meant for. There are only a few narrowly defined areas in which free speech is not a defense and this does not fall into any of them.

Why they are not offended with other stuff, like Twilight or something?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that people can, in fact, be offended by more than one thing at a time. Just a thought.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Jezz Its just a stupid flash game, people need stop getting so pissed off about them.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

GayArmenia really missed the boat on this one.  Also,

"I wonder, where are the voices of those religious-minded people in Tbilisi, Georgia, who swear in the name of Georgian patriarch and constantly cite Bible to ‘justify’ their homophobia and hatred. Is this their (un-)‘orthodox’ way of bringing up children by creating an image of enemy (=gays) and teaching how to deal with it (=kill them)?"

Really?  You think this was made by religious minded people in Tbilisi?  Goddamn, what stupidity.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

I'm bisexual.  I agree with you.

Nuff said..

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

"I have to say that at the beginning, we really didn't understand why the association was attacking us. The guy who came up with the game... wanted to mock hunters and red-necks, not gay men."

While this looks like a cheap excuse at first glance, I'm half inclined to believe it since it doesn't seem like bare asses and cartoon buggery are the standard weapons of your garden variety homophobe.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

*forheadpalm*

Just because somethign doesn't INTEND to be homophobic doesnt mean that it's not.  There's a line between being juvinile and just plain being stupid.

Honestly this kind of stuff just kinda makes me sad considering that this is either A>  a lame excuse to get out of a homophobic accusation, or B> proof that they didn't consider that it might be homophobic in the first place.

IT's just like using "Gay" to mean stupid to me.  But at the same time I don't blame the makers.  Once you get something on the interwebs it will NEVER come off.  At least they tried to do the right thing and pull it.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Actually, in order to be homophobic, it has to be intended.  Do you know what homophobic actually means?  It means "afraid of homosexuals."  As such, in order to have an actual homophobic episode, you have to be afraid of homosexuals.  Seeing as how the claim is going after redneck hunters, and their stereotypical homophobia, your post is nonsensical.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Actually, no, you are entirely and utterly wrong. 'Intent' does not have to exist for something to be homophobic or homo-bigoted -- ignorance of your own internalized biases produces the same effect continuously. Including here on this board.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Intent does have to exist.  Do you not know the definition of homophobia?  I don't know how, since I defined it in my post.  I am not homophobic or homo-biggoted.  However, that doesn't mean I don't think I should have the right to make comments that closed-minded people like you will interpret as homophobic, because you don't know what homophobic means.

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Change the hunter from a male to female. Problem solved.

'Cause it's "OK" to shoot rapist, right? But rapists can be gay too, right? But shooting a gay rapist isn't politically correct, right?

I'm confused!

Re: Old Gay Bashing Game Resurfaces, Sparks Eastern Euro ...

Yeehaw, kill them queers!

Seriously though, free speech means free speech. As long as this game isn't DIRECTLY agitating for real world violence against gays, you've got to put up with it. I mean, you can protest, not play it, etc. but don't get it banned or you've just turned into to Jack Thompson.
