SouthPeak Proud to Have Former "Worst CEO of Year" Join Its Board of Directors

August 4, 2009 -

Video game publisher SouthPeak Interactive announced late yesterday that former Take-Two CEO Paul Eibeler (left) is joining its board of directors.

Judging from the language of its press release, SouthPeak appears to regard the addition of Eibeler, named Worst CEO of 2005 by MarketWatch, as good news:

“As one of the most respected executives in the interactive games industry, we welcome Paul to the Board of Directors,” said Terry Phillips, Chairman of SouthPeak. “His depth of experience will certainly be an asset to SouthPeak growth as a major publisher.”

Paul Eibeler is best known for his leadership at Take-Two Interactive...

Eibeler is indeed best known for his days at Take-Two. It was under his watch that the Hot Coffee scandal rocked the video game industry, with the Grand Theft Auto publisher inexcusably blaming the now well-known sex scenes on the GTA mod community before ultimately 'fessing up that it was original content.

Eibeler's reign was also plagued by securities investigations which led to charges against several past employees (although not against Eibeler). The former CEO was ousted by a 2007 shareholder revolt led by current T2 chairman Strauss Zelnick. Eibeler exited with a $2.5 million golden parachute.

Heh, I really don't think Southpeak cares who they have. They are all about crapware, they can pretty much only go up.

Re: SouthPeak Proud to Have Former "Worst CEO of Year" Join ...

Hmm, i was still under the information that the Hot Coffee Mod WAS user created content.

Either way, it required user created content to unlock, or a modchip/homebrew patch to unlock, right?

Re: SouthPeak Proud to Have Former "Worst CEO of Year" Join ...

Well ,they better be ready for nightmarish harassment once a certain person finds out about this.

Re: SouthPeak Proud to Have Former "Worst CEO of Year" Join ...

Regardless of Eibeler's past, SouthPeak has nowhere to go but up or out. The worst he could do would be to accelerate the inevitable.

Re: SouthPeak Proud to Have Former "Worst CEO of Year" Join ...

SouthPeak is largely a shovelware publisher who has been trying (and failing) to expand into bigger budget products.  I imagine Eibeler has been unemployed since his time at Take-Two and has probably burned through most of his undeserved parachute payment so he's probably looking for work now.  And to be able to say they have Take-Two's former CEO is a big deal to a small player like SouthPeak.  I didn't see them lasting more than a couple of years anyway but with him as an adviser, I'm sure they'll be dead even sooner now.  Granted, he was overseeing Take-Two at a time when they were getting slammed around because of Ryan Brant & Co.'s crooked dealing but still, the main isn't capable of running a bath, let alone a large company.

Andrew EisenMarvel has replaced Manara on the variant covers for Thor #2 and Avengers and X-Men: AXIS #1. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think Marvel is learning the right lesson here.09/23/2014 - 6:26pm

MaskedPixelanteDear GP, something called "doubleverify" is causing some nasty browser issues on my end. Probably one of your ads.09/23/2014 - 2:36pm
Andrew EisenOh hell no. No, it took Nintendo a dog's age just to get to the point its competitors have been at for a while! (And it's still not there yet, in a lot of respects.)09/23/2014 - 2:26pm
IanCSame as PSN handles it, fi you are trying to say only nintendo do that.09/23/2014 - 2:23pm
Andrew EisenYou have to try to purchase something first. Pick a game, hit purchase and if your wallet doesn't have enough to cover it, you'll be given an option to "add exact funds" or something like that.09/23/2014 - 2:05pm
MonteI have seen no option for that on my 3DS; anytime i want to add funds it only gives me the option to add in denominations of $10, 20, 50 or 10009/23/2014 - 2:03pm
IanCWhat Andrew Wilson said. PSN is the same when you make a purchase over a certain price (£5 in the UK)09/23/2014 - 2:02pm
Andrew EisenNeither eShop charges sales tax either. At least in California.09/23/2014 - 2:00pm
Andrew EisenBoth Wii U and 3DS eShops allow you to add funds in the exact amount of whatever's in your shopping cart. If your game is $39.99, you can add exactly $39.99.09/23/2014 - 1:57pm
Infophile@Matthew Wilson: As I understand it, any regulations to force tax online would also set up an easy database for these stores to use, minimizing overhead.09/23/2014 - 1:30pm
MonteReally, the eshop just does next to nothing to make buying digitally advantagous for the customer. Its nice to have the game on my 3DS, but i can get more for less buying a physical copy at retail. And that's not even counting buying used09/23/2014 - 1:18pm
MonteIanC, The Eshop wallet system only lets you add funds in set denominations and the tax makes sure you no longer have round numbers so you ALWAYS loose money. A $39.99 game for instance requires you to add $50 instead of just $4009/23/2014 - 1:13pm
Matthew Wilsonbut thats just it those sites, even the small ones, sell all over the country.09/23/2014 - 11:12am
