Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

August 11, 2009 -

British publisher Imagine routinely includes ads for pornography and sex chat services in the back of their video game magazines, according to a report at Overclock3D.

There, a UK man writing under the name "mayhem" describes sending his 8-year-old daughter out on a secret shopper mission to see whether she could purchase video game magazines containing such ads:

My 8 year old daughter walked in... On the lower shelf she picked out several magazines including Play (a Sony PlayStation 3 Magazine) and 360 (a Microsoft Xbox 360 magazine) both of which are published by Imagine Publishing. Neither of these titles had an 18 or 15 certificate on them. She also picked up several Future Publishing magazines and Dennis Publishing magazines.

She then proceeded to the check out were a young girl of about 19 years old had a quick look at the magazines and then scanned them in. My daughter then handed over the money and then walked out after saying thank you, and handed the magazines to me.

After a quick look through all the magazine I found that only Imagine Publishing had any sort of pornography contained within them...

So over all its been a interesting day finding out that such a major publisher (Imagine Publishing) has no morals when it comes to making money, even if it means serving up pornographic content to children that may read their magazines...

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

This has nothing to do with the retailer. These magazines contain 1 or 2 pages of adverts for sex lines, but the magazines themselves are about computer games, they aren't sneakily trying to peddle this stuff onto kids. These are the same adverts contained in many national papers (which also have no age rating on them and some contain real porn eg Page 3). Yes I don't think it is best that these magazines contain the adverts considering that many are aimed at pre-teens/teenages (judging by their poor content and humour), so the complaints should be aimed at the publishers not the store selling them, but the adverts are not as the writer describes and their content is not near as explicit as that on the front of many men's magazines.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

These kinds of ads are virtually all over print magazines in Germany and nobody frickin' cares, nor should they. Sheesh. OMG, females and maybe a single male, in a 'dubious pose' with all their bits covered in yellow "don'tlookatme" blips. Like, seriously,... people who don't like sex or want to hide the fact that nipples exist (WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!) ... get a life.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

As somebody who is a subscriber to two Imagine Publsihing titles (GamesTM and Retro Gamer), these ads are pretty darn pornographic, using erotic (although not obscene) language and occasionally featuring bare breasts. It's not so much that I have a problem with this kind of thing - I LOVE porn, it's fantastic, moar plz nao etc - it's just that they sem totally out of context in a videogames magazine.

If these ads were in men's lifestyle magazine like GQ, Esquire or Maxim, or lads mags like Nuts, Zoo and Loaded, then it'd be a different story altogether. But they do seem out of place in a videogames mag. It implies gamers are sex-hungry perverts! I mean, I know that I am, but I don't think I represent our entire subculture!

Would I like to see them removed? Quite frankly, I don't really care enough to give a toss. But if I was a gaming father, I'd be at least disappointed and probably quite annoyed to find these things in the back of the magazine. They do, after all, advertise sexual services - it'd be like finding a number for a sex chatline in the back of Variety, Premiere or Billboard.

So, all things being equal, it'd probably be for the best if Imagine publishing found an alternative stream of ad revenue.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

This isn't anything new- another mag in Imagine's stable has had these ads for ages, and while the writers have made a lot of noise about not liking them, there's not really a lot they can do about it.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

Gaming angle? Sure Gaming mags were used, but I'm sure this sort of advert can be found in many mags in the UK and the Sun & Star contain Even More Porn but I'm sure an 8 year old girl would have no problems buying either.

I have some adverts like this at the back of the Metro (free rag).

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

Saying these ads are pornography themselves is such bullshit. Unless they are full of nude people or smutty language, the porn doesn't begin until you use the service it's advertising.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

Sounds like "mayhem" and Jack Thompson should get together and go bowling or something.  They've both used their children as secret-shopper pawns in their crusades against the gaming industry.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

Bowling?  I can't see Jack enjoying something so mundane, unless FOX News was there to paint him as some sort of bowling expert or something.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

1. How sad is it that people expect even magazines to carry ratings now? You can't leaf through the fucking thing yourself and make a decision based on your own sense of morals? How pathetically lazy have we humans become that we expect others to address our own moral pet peeves?

2. Am I the only one who thinks it's rather creepy -- in a "cognitive dissonance" sort of way -- that this guy is sending out his eight-year-old daugther on a quest for pornography? Is there perhaps something of the vicarious in this father's actions?

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

1. How sad is it that people expect even magazines to carry ratings now?

He's probably confused because both The Official Xbox and PlayStation Magazines do have BBFC certificates (probably switching to PEGI soon), usually 15+ or 18+, but that's because they come with a demo disc. As the games carry a rating and the disc is sold with the magazine, the magazine has to show the rating as well, especially as the disc isn't always visible.

So the same normal PG13ish range nudity on TV can not be in magizines? 0-o

I'm not sure on that one. I've seen full frontal on a European ad for bottled water of all things, and I'm pretty sure it was from the UK.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

I'm not sure I get the "secret shopper" angle to his story.  It's not like he's catching these retailers red handed.  It doesn't even seem to be the businesses that are the problem.  Looking at it from a retailer perspective would I brand every magazine 18+ on the off chance they change their business models to include adult material.  I'm guessing retailers rely on customer feedback as well as the magazines themselves providing the information.

This guy could just as easily have walked in to the stores himself without the cloak and dagger antics.  Also, who cares that the first cashier was 19 years old.  It seems a pointless bit of information to add in.  Unless we're to infer from her age that she is careless at her job.  Maybe, but unless this girl completely missed a warning on her screen I don't really see the point in mentioning her.

Besides which, how good a parent are you if you knowingly send your kids in to buy pornographic material, even if it is for the greater good.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

While I get that a child managed to buy these magazines in the store, I really need to know if these zines are targeted at children in the first place, before I make a judgement.  Are "Play" and "360" meant for all ages, or just older gamers?  If it's the former, then I sort of have to agree that porn ads aren't appropriate.

Is Jack doing stings in the UK now?

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

When I was kid, I was really annoyed when some sort of porn went on my stuff, kid that is: below 12... after that I started to seek porn...

But I remember like being 8, and seeing ads or naughty stuff on television, like scantly-clad cartoon program presenter, or ads that plainly appeal to porn like Evony do today...

In fact, Evony bothers me... Altough I seek porn, I don't wanna see the same women with huge boobs 4 times in the same page, in every single page that I visit on internet...

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

You know I would scream Oh god save the children except I have seen some of the shows they play on BBC (you know their public broadcasting station) that have just as much if not more risque stuff in it then just topless women ... this sounds more like a case of a morality police then actual concern.  (and thank god for people like Jack and the moral police if only they could do more we could live in such great countries as Iran and UAE)

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

I bought a magazine that covers retro games a few months ago (Retro I think it's called?) and the last two pages were full of ads for phone sex lines and escort services, all featuring either scantically clad or topless women. :p

EDIT: SimonBob has the name of the mag, Retro Gamer. It pays to read other people's comments...

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

I have 2 questions:

1) Is it like, REAL porn? Or like...Maxim or FHM "porn".  And

2) If it's the real kind....where can I get these magazines? *whistles innocently*

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

My local Barnes and Noble as well as Borders usually carries these magazines. Expect to pay 2-3 times as much for them ($15 average) due to them being imported from the UK.

I'll have to check them out next time I'm there to see exactly what this "porn" they're talking about is.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

It's phone-sex and sex-text ads. The kind filled with naked women covering all the naughty parts. Like a clean version of what you'd find in real porn magazines. See a few posts up.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

Imagine are the publishers of the "Girls of Gaming" and "Girls of Anime" series as well as Play, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were a bit more risque.  That said, they do digital versions as well as print, and any "naughty bits" are exclusive to the digital version, likely for this very reason.

I'd like to know more about what specifically was found.  It's conceivable to me that the mother was crying "pornography" when it's something I'd call cheesecake.  I suppose this is a long way of saying, "This thread is useless without pics."  *grin*

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

I think the 'Girls of...' series you reference are actually published by Fusion, not Imagine. (I can see where you could get confused, as Imagine has the PS-centered 'Play' in the UK, while Fusion has a platform-agnostic mag of the same name in the U.S.)

I clicked on the story, and the pictures included in the post were more "ads for porn" than porn itself. Didn't seem too bad to me. I'm more concerned that the guy sent his 8-year-old daughter into a large store all by herself.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

So, it's "ads for porn" instead of "porn filled ads".

That's quite a different beast. All the naughty bits have been covered and I'm willing to bet the language is quite soft.

The tabloids, which are sold at child eye-height right beside the candy in the checkout aisle (at least that's where they're sold in the US) are full of much 'worse' content.

Re: Report: Porn Ads in Game Mags from UK Publisher

Don't forget that at least one tabloid in the UK is known for their topless pictures in every issue.

How else will they learn about Samus Aran

Hey, if it gets the kids reading Retro Gamer, then I'm all for it.
