Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing Secret

August 19, 2009

PlayStation 3 manufacturer Sony gamed the product registration system of the Federal Communications Commission, according to PS3 News.

Yesterday, of course, Sony announced that it was dropping the price of the PlayStation 3 to $299 and introducing a slimmed-down, 120GB version on September 1st. Digging through FCC records, PS3 News discovered filings for a 200GB PS3 registered to Sand Dollar Enterprises of San Mateo, California:

Now, Sand Dollar Enterprise, Inc is represented by SCEA's General Council, Riley Russell.

This house is actually a private residence, but whomever lives here filed the documents with the FCC, most likely on the behalf of Sony, as they would be much harder to find with a different FCC ID (XCE) than that of Sony (AK8).

This means that some time in the future (for probably a premium, maybe $349 or so), a new PS3 Slim may come out featuring a 250GB HDD. There is not much of a difference, but expect it to be bundled with a game or so, right in time for Christmas!

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

Sony is bad at keeping secrets. We all knew about the PSP Go and the PS3 slim before they were officially announced.

When Jack Thompson runs his mouth, does anyone really care what he has to say anymore?

Sony Giving a fake name to the FCC to throw us off on who created the PlayStation 3 Slim, very clever

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

Hmm yes, did you read the article? This wasn't about hiding that Sony makes the PS3...or whatever you were trying to say, it was meant to hide that there is a version with a bigger hard drive probably coming out.

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

I must say Sony really let themselves down in the design market with this PS3 Slim, it's really lost all of the gloss (in more than one way) of the original console.

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

Not at all, the glossy one got all scratched up, even with it just sitting there inexplicably. I much prefer the matte black. Not only is it smaller, it retains all the functionality, blu-ray, blue tooth, etc, and it is going to be $299. I'm buying one.

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

Because the FCC registration being discussed isn't for the recently released PS3 Slim. It's speculated to be for another memory-enhanced PS3 Slim to be released in the future.

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

What I know about FCC regulations could maybe fill a thimble halfway, but... can they do that?

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

As long as the entity submitting the FCC filing is a legal representative of the product's manufacturer, yes they can.

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

So they can name a product in the FCC file and then change it afterwards?

Re: Sony Gave Fake Name to FCC to Keep PS3 Slim Filing ...

It wasn't a fake name for the product it was a fake name for the company submitting the product.

DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
