Whether your Internet addiction involves online games or plain old web surfing, there's a new treatment option for you.
The Puget Sound Business Journal reports that the reStart Internet Addiction Recovery Program, which opened recently in Fall City, Washington - not too far from Microsoft HQ - is the first facility of its kind in the United States.
How do you know if you have a problem? Take this quiz. reStart's 45-day treatment program will set you - or your healthcare insurer - back about $45,000.

I accept the fact that people do get compulsive and obsessed over using the internet, but the basic mechanisms behind most forms of mental addiction are similar. Why do we need a specialized institution to treat just one form of addiciton? Sounds like a waste.
It's as much as a scam to pay $45,000 for "internet addiction treatment" as it is to pay for a "game design degree". This is just another money-trapping business jumping in on exploding tech trends.

Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
I realize some ppl have real problems with internet/games, but calling it addictions is just too much, and it's quite insulting to the ones that has a REAL addiction such as drugs or alcohol.
I think those ppl should just go see a phycologist, as they're most likely having personal issues, and the gaming is just a side effect of it.
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
There are some people who have a problem removing themselves from video games and it costs them their marriage, job, and other big things. THOSE people definitely have a problem. Used to work with a guy some years ago and he lost basically everything because he straight refused to stop playing Everquest, but I am convinced that he got lost in it so bad because he was depressed with his real life.
I think this place is a joke of an institution. I think that because of the price tag, first and foremost. I really want to know what exactly $45,000 is going toward. That is $1000 a day, for christ's sake. (Isn't a thousand dollar a day habit actually a refrence to drug abuse?)
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
I find it funny that the G4 article (Which the site is citing) is basicly making fun of the entire thing.

You know what could work better, especially for younger people? Sign up for club sports. Much, much cheaper. They could cost around $50 to $500, depending on the sport, team, and league. Still better then $42,000.
If you find a good team, they could help many problems listed. First being off the internet. Second, being much more social. Third, being more active. Forth, could help depression (Trust me, club sports are not like gym class. Everyone is supportive, even if you are 400 pounds of fat). fifth, you are stretching your muscles, no hunching over the computer.
Doesn't that seem like a much better treatment?
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
To those getting those high test results, the test is likely designed so anyone who spent the five minutes to take will go "OMG, something is wrong with me T.T"
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
Being dishonest to others is a sign of addiction? It's more like the sign of being human. One of the reasons the internet is addicting is because how social it is. You can talk to people who have similar interests with you and build a "relationship" with others.
So in the long run, this clinic is treating you for being too social. Yes I know games have something to do with it, but the main focus is the internet in general.

My dad used to be addicted to yahoo chess, (possibly because we wouldn't play him since he'd thrash us every time) and he would become so focused on the game he'd be unable to tell if someone in the same room was talking to him.
He basically quit cold turkey (he may still play every now and then).

Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
Is there ANY major medical organizations that accept internet addiction as a diagnosis, or is it just one of the myriad of things people can get 'addicted' to if they really like it?

I scored 2/12 and I spend literally my entire day on my computer with 2 monitors. I'll be the first to admit I have "a problem" (though I suppose you could attribute it to the fact that I am disabled and can't do a whole lot else), so their 'quiz' is terrible.
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
They must be really hurting for enrollment. I scored a 12 for 12.

I work in IT/QA at a software company. I answered yes to almost every question there. Do I have an addiction or do I just have a freaking job?!
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
You have a real job, which is much more than the quacks who run this center can claim.
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
Signs & Symptoms of Computer & Internet/ Gaming Addiction
(3-4 yes responses suggest abuse; 5 or more suggest addiction)
• Increasing amounts of time spent on computer and internet activities
Possible. But depends on their ability to budget their time.
• Failed attempts to control behavior
ADD, ADHD, other mental condition (a great many exist).
• Heightened sense of euphoria while involved in computer and internet activities
Oh my gosh! They found something they LIKE that YOU don't! How horrible for them! It must be horrible knowing they found something that makes them HAPPY! (See further below.)
• Craving more time on the computer and internet
Rather than addiction, escapism?
• Neglecting friends and family
Or, perhaps, their social circle of friends IS online. And perhaps they preceive their family in a negative manner. Oh, but a bad family is the fault of the computer and internet.
• Feeling restless when not engaged in the activity
It's called being bored out of one's gourd.
• Being dishonest with others
Really? I know a LOT of people like that. And they justify it as "protecting the children!" or claim that their religion considers it a "moral" act.
• Computer use interfering with job/school performance
Now THIS may be one legitimate sign of a problem. Depending on how long it's been going on, it may be a developing problem or one that has been denied for a long time.
• Feeling guilty, ashamed, anxious, or depressed as a result of behavior
Gee, considering how you have helped to have computer/video games demonized and stigmatized and those who participate in the activity as people with some sort of mental problem, is it REALLY a surprise that, after being treated in such a manner, that they WOULD act in those ways? You CREATED the problem. It wasn't the computer/video games that was the problem. All to make money... or for some OTHER deep seeded mental abnormality of your own that you want to inflict on others.
• Changes in sleep patterns
Another symptom that might have its roots in a great many conditions, phsyical and/or mental.
• Physical changes such as weight gain or loss, backaches, headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome
Same as above. Even carpal tunnel syndrome may be a combined cause of the use of computers all day long, both in work/school AND home.
• Withdrawing from other pleasurable activities
Mood swings also occur in interests. Sometimes, it's called a fad. Sometimes, it's called "growing out of" a particular situation. I, myself, have changed my interest in genres and platforms of games over the last few decades. Changing overall interests isn't that big of a jump.

I looked at this, and, since I go to school via the internet and am in the middle of moving, I'm addicted.

Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
Of course, this would open on the west coast of this country.
This is nothing but a group of shysters with a new way to steal money from people. Sadly, in doing so, they've legitimized the belief that there is such a thing as video game and internet addiction. Consider this; in this high-tech world, many people spend most of their day on the internet, doing everything from business to social networking to playing games.
Also, I'm waiting to hear that they beat their first client to death.
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
I was wondering if the cost included the beatings or are those extra?

45,000$ to tell you to "use the internet less"? Wow, sounds like a deal. I mean, half the price of an apartment or the cost of 2 cars to be told to use the internet less is a bargain!
Re: First U.S. Internet Addiction Center Opens
Wow, that's a year's salary for me. Hmmm, let's round up my monthly internet bill to $70. that $45k would last me....oh.....53.57 years. I'd be 80! Damn, I better start surfing more.
