Time to Move On

September 14, 2009 -

Hey, I've got something to share with you:

Today is my last day as editor of GamePolitics.

Although the public announcement may seem sudden, the decision to move on is one that I've been considering for some time. While I'm enormously proud of GamePolitics, after four-plus years of continuous coverage of a tightly-focused news genre, my heart tells me that I've said all that I can say about the intersection of video games and politics.

I let ECA president Hal Halpin know of my decision last month and I'm grateful that Hal - as always - has been supportive. My departure also means, of course, that GP will have a new editor. We'll have that announcement in a separate post today. As for me, I've made the decision to step away from journalism and will be moving into another opportunity.

While there will be days on which I miss the daily challenge of editing GamePolitics, I am quite certain that I will miss the community of GP readers even more. Some of you have been around since the earliest days of the site. It has always been your passion about video games and your interest in the politics surrounding the medium that energized GamePolitics and made it one of the most unique destinations on the web.

Play on.

Re: Time to Move On

It's been good reading your articles and staying here with the GP community. Good luck on whatever pursuits you have.

Re: Time to Move On

Best of luck Dennis.  I'm sure we'll see you more in the discussions on the site, looking forward to having some intense debates that are removed from the need for objective journalistic neutrality ;)

Re: Time to Move On

Thanks for keeping us informed over the past few years, Dennis. Make sure you come back and comment! Don't just leave the community behind!

Re: Time to Move On

We hate to see you go, Dennis. Good luck in whatever you find yourself doing next.

Re: Time to Move On

Good luck Dennis. We will miss you. :'(

Re: Time to Move On

Best of luck Dennis. It has been one hell of a ride.

Re: Time to Move On

I wish you the best. We have had our differences, in the past, but you have been a faithful and (typically) non-biased reporter. I salute you, and hope to see you in your next venue soon.

Re: Time to Move On

Good luck Dennis. You definitely made an impression in the gaming blogosphere.

Re: Time to Move On

Ouch man. Well I hope that I speak for the rest of us that GP was one of the few sites that has done real game's journalism.

Re: Time to Move On

You have done a great Job with game politics Dennis, hope your future endevers are just as successful!

Goodbye Gp, you will be missed but where ever you go will be more than lucky to have you

Re: Time to Move On

Who will update teh site now? Will it still be updated or abandonded. :'(

Re: Time to Move On

He's naming a new editor today, so the site will still be updated.

Re: Time to Move On

I cant say I am really surprised, the more recent GP articles seemed to be more and more influenced with personal opinions, so you knew something was up, just not what.

But, best of luck in your future endeavors, you will be missed.

Re: Time to Move On

Hey Dennis, thank you for bringing us the word around here. We all are truly going to miss you. Also, if JT starts gloating, well we will just bring him down like we always do.

Thank you again Dennis, and good luck!

Re: Time to Move On

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

(Edit: dammit, somebody beat me to that.  Oh well.  Cheers.)

Re: Time to Move On

Dennis,

I have been reading GP since my Senior year of high school, and it is this site that got me through my current event assignments in my History class that year. I have been hooked ever since. We will miss you.

"Bon voyage, and best of luck in your future endeavors."

GP won't be the same without you.

Yes I have a WIP. Just wait and see.

Re: Time to Move On

I'm sad to see you go, Dennis.  I'm sure whoever replaces you will be just as competent, but it won't be you.  GP under your guidance provided some of the best political coverage when it came to gaming.  And of course for better or worse was our go-to source for keeping track of all of Jack Thompson's antics.  In fact, I would like to think this site had a big hand in contributing to his downfall, as no other news site was able to document such a consistent pattern of behavior that could be tracked which ultimately culminated in the authorities giving him his long-overdue disbarment.  And it was probably also for this reason that you were so frequently the target of his ire, as he realized you were a threat to his credibility.

Unlike others, I doubt Jack will take credit for your leaving.  You weren't being pressured in any way by any outside forces he could even tangentially link himself with, and GP will remain after you've gone.  If anything, he's probably furious as he will now be deprived of one of his favorite punching bags.  Though he'll probably move on to a new one soon enough, knowing him (I feel sorry for Hal, BTW.  This means his inbox is going to be spammed twice as much now!)

As with all the others, I wish you best of luck, Dennis.  Here's hoping I'll see you at the next VGXpo!

Re: Time to Move On

Good luck GP, I hope you can make the occasinail post/article.

I've been here since the GTA sex scandal hoping That the moron in miami would get disbarred from the State of Florida and the Federal level

Watching JT on GP is just like watching an episode of Jerry springer only as funny as the fights

America has just became its own version of the Jerry Springer Show after a bizarre moment in Florida involving a carnival worker.

Re: Time to Move On

Congrats: your prayers have been answered. JDKJ posted something in the forums about the Southern District of Florida pulling his Federal license, so now both his State and Federal law licenses are gone. Guess this is one of those "good news, bad news" kinda days.

Best of luck to you Dennis. We've enjoyed having you here and you will be missed.

Wouldn't it be a kick in the pants if Jack-o is the new editor?

Re: Time to Move On

So long, and thanks for all the fish :)

Good luck in the future Dennis, as someone who's been a regular for a good few years, the place won't be the same without you.

Re: Time to Move On

My best wishes to you, Dennis, on your new endevour. And thank you for all your work here in GP.

Re: Time to Move On

Hate to see you go, Dennis. Thanks for everything and best of luck with with your future endeavours.

Re: Time to Move On

Dennis, I am proud to say I've been a reader of your work for the last couple of years. It is a surprise that you are leaving and one I am sad over. However what ever you do in life from here on out, good luck :) Despite any arguement any of us have had with you, there is one universal thing we will admit: We all respected you.

Take care, and hope to see your comments in the upcoming stories from the new editor. Oh and enjoy the peace from a lightened load of Jack Thompson spam-mails :P

Re: Time to Move On

I've thoroughly enjoyed your editoring of the site.  I'll miss your comments and work.

I've been reading the site for under a year now and you've certainly done a fantastic job. I love reading GP and hope to continue doing so in the future. Thank you for establishing this great source of news. :)

Re: Time to Move On

Dennis, It's been nice of you to be our GP editor.  I guess it's really the time for you to move on.  thanks for making us gamers happy by keeping track of what's going on in gaming controversey, politics, and keeping track of politicians pulling double standards.

I wish you good luck, Dennis

PS-GP was my place for research for video game controversey.  Without you, I might not heard of Olson and Kutchner's book on video game.  That book helped me with my research on video game in my English class.

Re: Time to Move On

Best of luck in whatever you're moving onto Dennis. It's been an absolute joy watching GP grow with you - you've done a fantastic job over the years and we can't thank you enough.

Cheers mate!

Re: Time to Move On

Good luck, Dennis!

Seriously, though- you do realize that Jack Thompson is going to try and take credit for you leaving GP. He will likely spin this as your departure is a result of an impending lawsuit and leaving is an "admission of guilt" as he is wont to do. Not that what he says matters anymore.

Sora-ChanI realize that they have ways getting around it, but one reason might be due to earthquakes.04/17/2014 - 4:42am
Matthew WilsonSF is a tech/ economic/ trade center it should be mostly tail building. this whole problem is because of the lack of tail buildings. How would having tail apartment buildings destroy SF? having tail buildings has not runed other cities around the US/world04/16/2014 - 10:51pm
Matthew WilsonAgain the issue is you can not build upwards anywhere in SF at the moment, and no you would not. You would bring prices to where they should have been before the market distortion. those prices are not economic or socially healthy.04/16/2014 - 10:46pm
ZippyDSMleeYou still wind up pushing people out of the non high rise aeras but tis least damage you can do all things considered.04/16/2014 - 10:26pm
ZippyDSMleeANd by mindlessly building upward you make it like every place else hurting property prices, ect, ect. You'll have to slowly segment the region into aeras where you will never build upward then alow some aeras to build upward.04/16/2014 - 10:25pm
Matthew WilsonSF have to build upwards they have natural growth limits. they can not grow outwards. ps growing outwards is terable just look at Orlando or Austin for that.04/16/2014 - 4:15pm
ZippyDSMleeIf they built upward then it would becoem like every other place making it worthless, if they don't build upward they will price people out making it worthless, what they need to do is a mix of things not just one exstreme or another.04/16/2014 - 4:00pm
Matthew Wilsonyou know the problem in SF was not the free market going wrong right? it was government distortion. by not allowing tall buildings to be build they limited supply. that is not free market.04/16/2014 - 3:48pm
ZippyDSMleeOh gaaa the free market is a lie as its currently leading them to no one living there becuse they can not afford it makign it worthless.04/16/2014 - 3:24pm
Matthew WilsonIf you have not read http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/04/introducing-steam-gauge-ars-reveals-steams-most-popular-games/ you should. It is a bit stats heavy, but worth the read.04/16/2014 - 2:04pm
Matthew Wilsonthe issue is when is doesn't work it can screw over millions in new york city's case. more often than not it is better to let the free market run its course without market distortion.04/16/2014 - 9:36am
NeenekoTrue, and overdone stagnation is a problem. It is a tricky balance. It does not help that when it does work, no one notices. Most people here have benifited from rent controls and not even realized it.04/16/2014 - 9:23am
