Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

September 22, 2009 -

In light of the game possibly containing a swastika, Activision Blizzard has decided to recall the game Wolfenstein from stores in Germany according to Kotaku.

A translation of a story on the 4players .de website, the original source of the story, notes that although the imagery “is not a conspicuous element in the normal game,” the publisher has decided to “decided to take this game immediately from the German market.” The game was released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. All versions are being recalled.

Planet Wolfenstein commented that eliminating the offending subject matter could be difficult, given that the game’s development teams from Endrant Studios and Raven Software have already been laid off.

So this is the "WW2 never happened... LA LA LA LA LA, I can't hear you!" defense from Germany. Way to be adults there Germany. You guys need to work on your "coping mechanisims."

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

If you believe Germany pretends WW2 never happend and does this to silence talk about this topic, then you're a clueless moron. You don't know anything at all abóut modern Germany. Get your facts straight (or at least get any facts at all) or shut the fuck up.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

I personally think that we show to anything to hide the past. Even though the Canadians aren't known for something that is Nazi like, I am more then happy to have an open discussion about the railroad we built that killed many Chinese men. It's the darker time in Canadian history, but we don't need to hide it.

Germany hiding history I think is doing more harm really. It allows much propaganda to continue. Not too many people (especially in North America) really know about why Hitler wanted to kill the Jewish. Even though it was wrong, but people knowing that the Jewish has great control over German economy at such poor times is more of a reason then just hating jewish for nothing. Also, Hitler brought people onto their feet, made jobs, and got out of the horrible Treaty of Versailles which even the American government warned for being a bad thing well before Hitler came into power.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

The movie wasn't edited at all.

See, movies don't have to be edited, because movies are art, and art is free under the constitution.

Games on the other hand are evil abominations, so they need to be edited.

On a side-note:

Really getting enraged about some of the ill-informed, stupid commentaries on Germany. You, people, are stupid, single-minded (also known as typical) Americans (or Canadians, in that one guy"s case).

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Germany doesn't have a constitution, at least not one guranteeing freedom of expression/speech for 'art'. So that makes you also ill-informed I suppose.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Germany does not have a constitution that is called "constitution", but it hasd the Grundgesetz, which works and is enacted like it was a constitution, and is interpreted by the "Constitutional Court" (thats its actual name).

And the Grundgesetz says (taken from the official translation):

Article 5

(1) Every person shall have the right freely to express and disseminate his opinions in speech, writing and pictures, and to inform himself without hindrance from generally accessible sources. Freedom of the press and freedom of reporting by means of broadcasts and films shall be guaranteed. There shall be no censorship.

(2) These rights shall find their limits in the provisions of general laws, in provisions for the protection of young persons, and in the right to personal honour.

(3) Arts and sciences, research and teaching shall be free. The freedom of teaching shall not release any person from allegiance to the constitution.

So who is ill-informed?

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Not me. Games still aren't officially recognized as an art by any countries government yet.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Germany has committed two holocausts against the Jews, two. So basically it’s not all Hitler’s fault and it wasn’t just a surprise the Germans can do such a thing. Again the Germans LOVE to pass the blame. The first holocaust was due to the Germans blaming the Jews for the Black Death in which it got so bad other countries and the Pope had to invade Germany and beat them down and then leave.

The Polish King at the time offered Jews to come to his land for protection doing the Christian thing and didn’t expect any of them to convert to Christianity which led to a build up of Polish Jews of course until World War II in which in revenge for those Jewish families leaving the first time, the Germans built the largest Camp Auschwitz.

The Germans do the same things to video game. Some German nut kills someone, its not the Germans fault lets pass along the blame to Jews or Video Games! Germans never learned

Because they never learn from history and always pass the blame on

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Wee, here we go again.

You generalize ALL Germans as LOVING to pass the blame. Yes, clearly they are all the same. You are a moron. You seriously believe that Auschwitz was built as some sort of revenge for something that happened over a 100 years previously. You are a moron. You then go back to your amazing generalizations about how ALL Germans never learn and ALL Germans never learn from history and ALL germans pass the blame on. You are a moron.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

"Germany has committed" ... "

"the Germans..."

"Again the Germans..."

"the Germans"

"the Jews"

"The Germans"

"Some German nut""the Germans"

"Germans never learned"

Germany this, Germans that ...

You only got it right once, but kept generalising right after. If you want to be taken seriously? Go back to "some". Or at least "many". Germany, like any country in the world, was never evil, isn't evil, and will never be evil. Neither will any counties entire population ever be, is, or has been.

Get that into your head, or if you have, then have the common sense to reflect the fact so in your writing.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

UUmmmm all counties do it, see japan and most things related to WW2, see china and everything, see the UK thinking they are better than everyone else, see USA and native Americans, and the left overs from the 50s brain washing campaign of the US is the bigest bestest country evera!!111

Yeah. Sure. The germans blamed the Jews for something that had died out over a century before.

The first Holocaust happened in 1348 in fact in the movie Schindler's list right before the Germans expelled the Jews from the ghetto it also makes not of this.

Also the King who welcomed the Jews into Poland was Wladislaus II

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Activision made the censorship decision themselves. By all accounts there hasn't been even the snifter of an outrage from within Germany itself. Although that said, there probably WOULD have been when it was noticed. And even if there wasn't there would have been outrage over the fact you have a gun, and shoot people.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Wow... y'know it only gets worse when you take a look how far they went to avoid nazi imagry

http://www.schnittberichte.com/schnittbericht.php?ID=5982811

Swastika's, the SS, the Nazi salute and so forth were axed from the game... and an uproar is caused by the very few that they missed.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

You know. The swastika isnt a Nazi only symbol.  Its been around long before they decided to use it.

Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period and was first found in the Indus Valley Civilization of the Indian Subcontinent. It even occurs today in the modern day culture of India, sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol. It also remains widely used in Eastern religions / Dharmic religion such as Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

The symbol has become stigmatized and to some extent taboo in the Western world because of its iconic usage by Nazi Germany, and it has notably been outlawed in Germany if used as a symbol of Nazism (usage of the sign by religious groups is tolerated). Many modern political extremists and neo-nazi groups such as Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging , the Syrian Social Nationalist Party and Russian National Unity use stylised swastikas or similar symbols.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Can we just skip all these stories about Germany and assume that as long as the country remains as un-American soil it will be anti-gaming. All of Europe is pretty much screwed up and will never have a sense for true liberty.

What.

Are you nuts?

Man, it's comments like these that make me glad I was born in Europe. Sure, we got nutjobs just like you guys, but they don't always know english well so we tend to have less problems with them. Most nutjobs online posting rubbish this insane are prolly from the USA. Yes, I'm a racist. Aren't we all?

Seriously. Fuck you. Just because I don't agree with some of the things your government of the past X years has done, doesn't mean I don't have a sense for liberty. It's not as if the USA exists merely of saints and the rest are demons and heretics.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Trust me, the Yank nutters are a cut above the European breed - they are foaming-at-the-mouth batshit crazy.  And there are more of them than you find in Europe.  I've been living in this country-sized loony bin for 20 years and it sometimes seems as if I'm drowning in a sea of septic-tank nutcasery.

And those who aren't crazy are ignorant hicks.  It's like God decided that all the world's ignorant hooligans and all the world's nutjobs needed half a continent to themselves.  I sometimes think the Canadians ought to dig a moat and hire psychiatrists to police the border.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

I counter you with Italy. Their leader is corrupt, has sex with minors (but gets away with it even if they were to proof it, since 16+ is legal period), a pervert, a racist and tries to blackmail the entire European Union because they get pissed at his behaviour, yet the Italian people STILL VOTE FOR HIM.

There are nutjobs out there, they just don't speak English much.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

"Oh no! Health care available to every citizen, this country is turning communist!" says a country that is happy to give free education to every citizen.

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

BTW, I'm Canadian. And I don't agree with what the US has done in the last X years, either or even in the past XX and XXX years. But it's what Europian governments and nations have done in the past XX XXX years that ticks me off. All this old shit like the Vatican, and Illuminati, and monarchs, and old creeds, and football riots, and hating the Irish. It's all old bullshit. Everything laid on upon another like patchwork that results in legislation based on historical taboo.

See when immagrents went from Europe to America and Canada, and gained independance, it's like a blank slate from all that. And then the Americans made a nifty thing called the constitution that made it a nation free from bullshit, and that's how it became the most prosperous nation in the world. Unfortunatly, America is sabotoging itself nowadys, and Europe certianly isn't helping with it's own bullshit. All the American nutbars see the Europian nutbars and think, "Hey, if it works in Europe it might work here."

BTW, tearing down the Berlin wall didn't end Communism. Think about it...

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

I don't give a rat's ass about Communism. Communism is a flawed ideology which won't work in reality due to human nature. Socialism ain't that much better, but at least it's working decently when mixed with Capitalism in the right way. Oh, and you think European countries don't have constitutions? Ours is from 1814, see, the European monarchies ALSO went through a democratizing process, just later on.

Besides, why the hell are you holding the past against Europe? Should I start up with what happened to all those original american people in the USA and Canada? And legislation based on historical taboo? Sure, that's so much worse than a state outlawing Whale hunting while it's in the middle of the fricking northern american continent.

As for sabotaging itself 'nowadays', are we talking about the country that let the world burn and only interfered out of self-interest? Twice?

Re: Nazi Imagery Gets Wolfenstein Yanked Off German Shelves

Communism works just fine in small regional settings of a few hundred, the trouble is when you have to distribute resources over a larger populace it just falls apart from the weight.Communism put into a real world setting also tends to create and widen class strife as those with contentions and ties gain power and infulance and the common people become peasants. Having a noble class that is only noble because of money dose alot of damage to a sosicty...look at the US currently with unfettered capitalism its not really that much different than with normal forms of communism, the middle is driven out and those with money create power and infulance being nobles of the day living beyond the common people like aristocrats.

Communism in the way it was suppose to work, could work if a people would stop dcking with a constitution thats geared to protect that form of government from human greed/apathy, and with our(any modern nation) capitalism based system it seems in peoples rush to be "progressive"(whatever the hell that means these days) they want to throw out all the protections in the constitution that keeps things balanced and in check for temporary prosperity that makes most rich but the top 10% insanely rich all the while the ships falling apart, the fat rats have left taken out thier gilded cages sailing to better shores while the ship is looking to run aground.

Not saying that they shouldn't have torn down the wall. It's just when it came down all the commies spread through Europe making socialism sound like a good thing. Some of them got on boats, went to Canada, and that's why we now have the NDP party. :P

The interesting part of the story is not the German reaction to the swastika, which is hardly news at all.  What's interesting here is the layoff info.  That's where the real story is.
